North Street School PTA Summer Newsletter

 

 Back to School Picnic and School Supply Drop Off Bring the whole family and a picnic lunch or purchase lunch from a lunch truck on site. Meet at the NSS fields on Monday, August 25, 11:00am. There will be treats and games for the kids. It’s a great opportunity to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. Drop off your child’s school supplies and say a quick “hello” to your child’s teacher.

Classroom Parent Contact Classroom Parent Contacts are a link between our teachers and parents on classroom issues and volunteer opportunities. Look for Class Coffees in the fall! Daisy Florin, [email protected]

Yearbook The Yearbook provides a special remembrance of our children’s year at NSS! The committee works hard to make the Yearbook a true treasure. Suzanne Hopson, [email protected] Elana Wood, [email protected] Maya Hyland, [email protected]

Afters Program The PTA Afters Committee has organized three trimesters of after (and before) school enrichment classes. Open to students in grades 1 – 5. Sue Mirza, [email protected]

NSS Mornings Morning childcare will be offered Monday through Friday from 7:30-8:30am on all days that school is in session. The program is non-academic but provides a supervised environment prior to the start of the school day. It can be used one day, everyday, or on an as-needed basis by dropping in. Authors’ Day This program allows our students to learn about the writing process from professional writers. And, of course, there are personally signed books for sale. Beth Kallett-Neuman, [email protected] Serena Perlman, [email protected]

Writer-In-Residence The PTA supports NSS’s writing skills program by sponsoring a “Writer-in-Residence”. The program utilizes specialists to enhance the writing skills of students in the upper grades. Hilary Lane, [email protected]

Cultural Enrichment The PTA is proud to advance and enrich the education of our children in the arts and sciences by bringing performers and expert lecturers to North Street School. Nicole Eskandar, [email protected] Wendy Lederer, [email protected]

Cultural Café A variety of musical performers entertain our students during their lunch period. We hope to expose the children to different types and forms of music, and provide a venue to stimulate their understanding of different cultures with questions for the musicians. NSS On Stage This amazing musical review gives NSS students a starring role in a real stage production. Rehearsals begin in December for fith grade and in February for grades 2-4. Performances on March 27 and 28. Look for sign-ups! Katy Massam, [email protected]

WordMasters The WordMasters Challenge is a national analogies-solving contest open to students in grades 3–5. Participation in all three competitions builds vocabulary and encourages higher-level verbal reasoning abilities. Liesbeth Carballo, [email protected] Sandy Minichetti, [email protected]

Book Fairs Twice a year we celebrate our love of books by hosting a Scholastic Book Fair. Each book fair kicks off with a Family Night and students visit the fairs with their classes during the day, with parent invited. Show your School Spirit! Look for the NSS Dragonwear table in the main hall during the first few days of school and at upcoming school events. You’ll have the opportunity to purchase great NSS T-shirts, shorts and many other items! Vicki Williams, [email protected]

Math Superstars An optional math skills program for students in grades 1 - 5. Participants get a challenging problem set each week and receive incentive points for correct answers. Alysia Berman, [email protected] Sandra Minichetti, [email protected]

Science Day This activity is a celebration of the natural and physical sciences. Join the fun on Thursday, February 5 for a spectacular science experience! Rommel Nobay, [email protected]

Reading Incentive The PTA runs a reading program during the school year to foster a lifelong love of reading. Each child is challenged to expand and improve his/her reading. Mabel Balestra, [email protected] Susan Burnett, [email protected]

International Week Set for March 2 - 6, the PTA sponsors this weeklong celebration highlighting different cultures around the world. The featured event of the week is the International Dinner to be held on Wednesday, March 4. Traveling Art Program This town-wide program and its volunteer docents present portfolios of well-known art reproductions to the students. The K-5 program encourages the children to verbalize what they see and share how they feel about the art. Alysia Berman, [email protected]
