From the Art Department ART UPDATE
The Wednesday Senior Assembly saw the presentations of the Annual ART Encouragement Awards. Recipients were Sarah Jurg and Ollie Joynson, both of whom intend to study ART next year. The other recipient whose sculpture " King OJ" delighted the judges was Jeremy Tass. All 3 students received prizes sponsored by OXLADES ART SUPPLIES in Brisbane. A little something to keep them inspired and creating.
Revitalizing the Music Mural Project is underway. Sadly, after being badly vandalised and thankfully, now the school has a new security fence we feel it is time to give it a face-lift. Pictured are some very reliable and neat Yr 9s have assisted in the project so far, thank you to Tahleah Corowa, Lily Bonney and Ivanna Lagos. The project is still underway and other students will be invited to participate.
ARTWORK OF THE MONTH
Slater Thompson is pictured here with his pencil
drawing, a wonderful imaginative response to Piranesi's
Imaginary Prison.
Renae Strang created this vase, a coil pot glazed in
firecracker red and crackle goldene when the students
were studying Art and Function.
In the Yr 9 Fine Art class students have learnt about the
functions and purposes of art both in theory and creating
a variety of art works of that are realistic, abstract,
political, expressive, scientific, functional and
imaginative.

Agriculture Round Up for 2020 Soil Regeneration Program:
An area of approximately 700m2 on the northern side of the Agriculture shed has
been undergoing some regeneration. After decades of being an unused space, the
agricultural students are endeavouring to reclaim the area and turn it into a
productive horticultural area. The project has been a long time in the planning
and has still got a long way to go. An enormous expression of gratitude must go
out to the Farquhar family, particularly Brian Farquhar. Brian has taken a lot of
time out of his busy schedule to come and work the area for us. Without his time
and machinery it would not have been possible to get the project off the ground.
Secondly, I like to extend a big thankyou to Mackay Sugar who kindly donated two loads of organic fertiliser, delivering and spreading it at no charge to the school. Thank you again to Mackay Sugar.
The area will be left to settle over the Christmas holidays, and hopefully be planted to crops in the New Year.
Machinery:
A walk behind tractor, rotary tiller and plough were purchased mid-year. Operation and maintenance of the tractor will be incorporated in the Year 11 and 12 Agricultural
Practices program being undertaken in 2021.
Orchard Development: During Term 4 Agriculture students have undertaken the establishment of an orchard. Although no trees have been planted to date, all the preliminary hard work has been done. Due to the orchard’s close proximity to very well established trees with far reaching root systems, two 600mm deep trenches were dug and lined with geo-fabric to prevent root encroachment. The trenches were then back filled with soil and mulched. A range of citrus trees will be planted in the New Year. After lots of digging, earth moving and raking, the work was done, and well rewarded with icy poles.
From this To this
Poultry: The new post Covid19 pullets are now laying well, and the ducks are now quite well established in the Agricultural precinct. The ducks will be relocated up to the orchard in the New Year to help with disease and insect management.
Mushrooms:
There is quite an emphasis on the study of agribusiness in the new Ag Practices course. The cultivation and marketing of gourmet mushrooms is an untapped opportunity in Mackay, and offers a chance for students to develop production and marketing skills. A few batches were cultivated this year, however the climate control necessary was too hard to maintain with the school’s current resources. Next year, the Ag precinct wants to acquire an 8-10 foot shipping container that can be fitted with an air conditioner and humidifier to control the environment so gourmet mushrooms can be grown the whole year round. If you know of a 8-10 foot shipping container in good condition, please, please, please let me know!
Red Claw Crayfish:
In second semester the Year 10 Ag cohort acquired some red claw crayfish. Despite a few initial teething problems, we managed to keep the crays alive. The project was not as successful as hoped; although we kept them alive, no breeding took place. Hopefully more success will be had next year.

Are you thinking of buying a new device for Christmas for that special
someone for school?
What device do we need?
The school is transitioning to laptops so a laptop would be preferable. You can choose between a Windows laptop
and a Mac laptop. However, if you do still have an iPad your student can still bring that to school for the lower
grades. Students in the higher grades will find a laptop is more suited to the curriculum. Unfortunately, we do not
support Android devices.
For more details on the specifications you will need, please visit our school web site. Click on the link below or copy
the link and paste into a browser to find out more information.

What can we do to get our device ready for school?
You know you can prepare you student’s new device or old device for school. If your student is in years 8 to 12, you can setup his or her device with the school’s network connection if you have not done so already. To setup the network connection you can download the instructions on how to onboard (connect to the network) by, once again, going to the school website and clicking either Windows Intune Guide, Mac Intune Guide or the iOS Intune Guide. You can follow the instructions given. Your student will need his or her school e-mail account and school password. For support, you can contact the Tech Team by e-mail. Use the e-mail address below. [email protected] Please note: - Enquiries submitted during the school holidays will be answered once school resumes.
What software do we need?
On the back of the specifications PDF that you can download from the school website, you can find the general applications students will need at school. All students will require Office 365. Office 365 is free for all students. They will be required to use their school e-mail address and password. For instructions on where to download Office 365 and how to install the applications on your student’s device, please go to the school website. Click on the link below or copy the link and paste it into a browser. https://mackaynorthshs.eq.edu.au/facilities/computers-and-technology
