Graphic Usage

Consistent graphic standards have been developed for the North Fork Ambulance Association for the purpose of maintaining the highest levels of organizational identity. The use of graphic standards will help to ensure correspondence; marketing material, volunteer recruitment, EMS membership information and other agency communications will enhance and portray the unique qualities of the North Fork Ambulance. This manual provides everyone, from the President, the Board of Directors and Graphic Design down to every volunteer and outside vendors an approved method and manner in which to represent the North Fork Ambulance through print, electronic and digital media using logos, tag lines and symbols. A Need for Graphic Consistency

For years, the North Fork Ambulance has not had a consistent image on which to represent the agency. In the past we have been simply known to many as the ‘NFAA’. Much time and work has gone into re-branding the Association into an even more recognizable community service oriented agency. The use of standard logos, colors, font schemes and other graphics in all Association communications will strengthen our visual identity in the community and make it so the image of the North Fork Ambulance is known to all. The specifications and guidelines in this manual are to be used by all staff members, board members including station captains and IT as well as outside vendors.

North Fork Ambulance Logo

In the spring of 2012, the North Fork Ambulance Graphics department launched an effort to re-brand the North Fork Ambulance as a community organization rooted in public service. To do this, a brand new logo was designed which is rooted in the deep history of volunteerism in the North Fork Valley and the Association. This new Association Logo proudly represents the history of the Association and replaces all previous logos as the Association’s new primary identifier. The Association shield is a graphic design, which embodies the history of the Association by combining several key elements, which define the North Fork Ambulance Association. The Association’s name is clearly and boldly laid out next to the Association Shield. The word “Fork” in North Fork Ambulance has been shaded blue. This has been done to draw representation to the North Fork Valley. The Association’s official motto/tagline is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” This tagline surmises the fundamental history of the North Fork Ambulance in three words. Since 1969 the North Fork Ambulance has been staffed by volunteers who when requested to do so, respond to emergencies in the community and treat sick or injured patients, who also happen to be their neighbors. Please refer to the Official Logos/Variations section to learn more about different versions of the logo. Association Shield – The Meaning

The Association shield is comprised of several specific and meaningful elements, all of which honor the Associations’ 43-year history in Volunteer EMS. These elements include:

1. The Star of Life, Serpent & Staff 2. A Shield 3. Three Stars 4. The acronym “EMS” 5. A QRS Wave 6. A Heart with an electricity bolt. 7. The year – 1969.

Individually, these symbols are simply symbols, each with their respective meaning. However, when combined together, they define the North Fork Ambulance.

-‐ Star of Life o The Star of Life and Serpent and Staff are included to represent the profession of Emergency Medical

Services and the six functions of EMS – Detection, Reporting, Response, On-scene care, care in transit and transfer to definitive care. The serpent and staff represent medicine and healing.

-‐ Shield o A shield has been included to represent the protection the Ambulance provides to those who we treat and to

represent the North Fork Ambulance’s involvement in Emergency Services and partnership in serving the community.

Page 4: North Fork Ambulance Logo · North Fork Ambulance Graphic Standards | Revised October 2015 2 Graphic Usage ... The Association’s official motto/tagline is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors

North Fork Ambulance Graphic Standards | Revised October 2015 4

-‐ Three Stars o In the upper left quadrant of the shield, are three stars. These stars represent not only American patriotism of

our volunteers but also the three communities in which North Fork Ambulance is based- Crawford, Hotchkiss and Paonia. The stars are aligned in an approximate location of the three communities in relation to each other.

-‐ “EMS” o Representative that the North Fork Ambulance is an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) provider 24/7/365 to

the North Fork Valley. -‐ QRS Wave

o The QRS wave of a heartbeat as indicated on an ECG machine is included in the logo to represent the ability to provide top quality and life saving care to keep the heart going.

-‐ Heart with Electricity Bolt. o This symbol represents Automatic External Heart Defibrillation. All North Fork Ambulance Staff are trained in

CPR and the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). This symbol signifies the North Fork Ambulance’s ability to save lives through early access to an AED.

Official Association Colors – Print/Apparel

The official Association colors are the colors, which comprise the Association’s graphic identity and make the North Fork Ambulance immediately identifiable as the North Fork Valley’s EMS provider.

To give the Association a consistent look across all graphic mediums, we have identified official colors using both the Pantone Matching System (PMS) and four-color printing (CMYK) systems.

All official Association apparel, publications, and promotional items should match these official colors as closely as possible.

The main logo is the promotional logo utilized by the Association for all promotions and advertisements.

The main logo should be the first logo utilized when promoting the North Fork Ambulance, as it is an easily identifiable and highly recognizable logo. The priority is to display it in full color, followed by Association Blue/White and then Gray Scale or Black & White. The main logo also works great as a mono color logo in solid white or light gray on dark colored apparel, photos and other promotional items where a full color logo would be lost.

Association Seal

The Association Seal, which consists of the Association shield inside a circle with the words “North Fork Ambulance” encircling the shield within another circle, may be used as a Graphic Element where there is not enough space to put the PR logo or there is a need for a circle logo.

• If the Association Seal is used on the same document or promotional item as a graphic element and the PR Logo is also utilized, the Seal must be in a washout/mono color design and faded into the background so as to not conflict with the PR Logo.

• The minimum allowed size is 1”.

When used for promotional uses, the Seal may be used in the following color variations:

Full Color

Blue over White

Black & White

White/gray over Dark Color

Staff Logo

The Staff Logo is a logo which can be used on apparel, promotional items or made into stickers to show support and designate affiliation with the Association as an EMT or driver.

Tagline Logo

The Tagline Logo is the only logo, which contains the Association’s slogan “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” and should only be utilized on the following items:

• North Fork Ambulance Website (www.northforkambulance.com) • Board of Director/Station/Captain and other Official Letterhead • Membership Brochure and any other official promotions which don’t include the main logo • Official Association documents such as the Patient Refusal

The minimum size for the logo is ½ inch tall by 2.8 inches wide.

The top of the Association Shield is white when portrayed in full color. Additionally the year “1969” and the piping around the Star of Life are also white in full-color. The stars shall only be depicted as being Association Copper and the acronym “EMS” is to be Association Green when in full-color.

The primary background color for the logo is white and the logo should never be applied to a background, which is darker than, or is a contrasting color, such as on a deep royal blue, forest green or purple. The following colors and layouts are approved for the Tagline Logo:

Tagline Logo on White Background – Preferred Format

Tagline Logo on light background.

Tagline Logo on light background.

Reversed Out Coloring – White over Black or Blue

When the Tagline Logo is used on colors darker than official colors such as black or dark blue, the logo must be reversed out in presented in all white, a light gray or Association blue. Note – the shield is different in this logo because the outer ring was reversed out to be transparent and is thus wider.

There are times when full color printing of the logo on documents or promotional items is not feasible. In these instances, the following designs should be used.

The use of the “NFAA” Acronym has been retired and should not be used in any fashion.

Do not discolor or alter the hue/saturation of the logo. Refer to the Official Association Colors section to match the Association colors correctly.

Do not delete the rings from around the Association Seal. The rings help unite the seal as a graphic element and the font or rings should not be altered.

Official Typefaces

The appearance of text and graphics in advertising and communications from the Association to the public is what helps maintain a consistent image and make the public immediately recognize with the Association. To help unify all communications from the Association, all print, electronic and other communications should utilize the following fonts:

• Pt Sans (Sans-Serif)

o The official font used to depict the Association’s name in all logos except the seal.

• Gill Sans (Sans-Serif)

o May be used a sub-heading or accent text.

• Adobe Garamond Pro (Serif)

o Used as a body paragraph font and in emails and other written communications.

• Myriad Pro (Sans-Serif)

o Used in advertisements and as accent text/paragraph text.

• Tahoma (Serif)

o Paragraph font for use in publications and brochures.

Acceptable Uses

Any of these fonts may be utilized in the regular, bold, italic, or bold italic versions of the font. You should not utilize the “light” versions of these fonts as they are too light to print effectively on documents and materials.

Compatible Fonts

• Adobe Garamond Pro

o If not available, use Garamond.

• Myriad Pro / Tahoma

o Goudy or Veranda is an acceptable alternative if neither of these fonts is available.

References to the Association in publications, advertisements and documents

When writing out documents, advertisements and other promotional pieces related to the Ambulance, it is often not possible to repeatedly refer to the ambulance as the “North Fork Ambulance.” In these instances, the author should type out the name North Fork Ambulance as the first reference to the Association and then in subsequent references, refer to the Association as a whole by using the words “Ambulance” or “Association”. The Acronym “NFAA” should NOT be used anymore in advertisements, social media posting or official communications and it should be encouraged that outside agencies, groups and newspapers, etc not use it either.

Example:

The North Fork Ambulance, is proud to Celebrate EMS week in recognition of the dedication and sacrifice of all our volunteers and the time they spend away from their families to help a neighbor in a time of need. The Association was founded by volunteers and has been staffed for the past 45 years by volunteers, who without their generosity, volunteer sprit and a desire to help a neighbor in a time of need, would leave the North Fork Valley without an ambulance service. Thank you volunteers for all you do!

Official Association Apparel for Staff

Our volunteers are the most visible and important marketing the Association can have when they are out in the community, on-call, responding to emergencies and at special events throughout the North Fork Valley.

To help the community and other emergency responders immediately and readily identify our volunteers, consistent apparel designs have been chosen.

Association Apparel

Previously, the majority of apparel approved and issued by the Board of Directors included a dark navy or royal color pallet with the occasional gray shirt, a plethora of colors of hats and a variety of different logos.

This confusing design scheme and apparel choices left the association without a readily identifiable image and volunteers were limited on the styles of shirts they could wear.

To maintain consistent imagery across hats, shirts and jackets the Association has adopted the following color scheme:

Hats:

• A variety of colors, sizes and styles has been chosen and highlighted in these standards.

• An allotment of hats will be given to each station on an annual basis. This allotment shall be approximately 60% of the station’s roster. This percentage will be adjusted if necessary to accommodate a station’s needs.

• Volunteers will also be able to purchase additional hats for themselves and family members.

Shirts:

A variety of new styles were chosen to fit the active life style and wardrobes of today’s volunteers.

As part of the re-branding process, our goal was to make the Association look more professional and uniform across the valley. There are now more varieties of shirts to choose from to find a style that fits a volunteer’s taste and lifestyle.

Approved Colors:

All shirts except as noted below in the individual styles, shall be one of the following colors:

• Navy blue, • Navy with White accents, • Navy with light blue accents, or • Navy with Tan accents.

The following colors are no longer used by the Association for Official Apparel and should NOT be used:

• Gray - any shade • Royal Blue • Black • Red • Green

Styles now offered:

Approved shirt styles now include:

• Button up style shirts o Long or short sleeve dress shirt o Long or short sleeve “uniform” style shirt

• Polo shirts: o Choice between 100% Cotton or 100% Polyester/Polyester blend

Page 13: North Fork Ambulance Logo · North Fork Ambulance Graphic Standards | Revised October 2015 2 Graphic Usage ... The Association’s official motto/tagline is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors

North Fork Ambulance Graphic Standards | Revised October 2015 13

o Long Sleeve

• T-shirts: o Pocket or no pocket o Men or Women’s o Long sleeve option o 100% Cotton or cotton blend

Jackets

The Board of Directors will continue to provide a light windbreaker jacket to all volunteers. Please below for pictures of the official windbreaker.

The Board will also continue to issue 5 year and 10 year anniversary jackets to volunteers in recognition of their service to the community. Styles for these jackets are designated below.

Volunteers who have not yet attained five or ten years of service to the Association may purchase their own jackets and have them embroidered or screen-printed with North Fork Ambulance graphics – see below for more details.

Logo to be used on Apparel

The Association logo will only be applied to apparel in the format shown in these standards and may not be altered.

The logo will be applied to apparel in two color schemes:

• Color • Single Color – White, Light Gray, Dark Gray or Black.

The following criteria apply to logos applied to apparel:

• The full color logo shall be the primary logo utilized on Association branded apparel and shall be embroidered or screen-printed onto the shirt/hat/jacket.

• T-Shirts shall be silk screened with the mono color logo front and rear, while Polos shall only have the color logo embroidered on the front. Polos may additionally have the Crewmember’s name and/or EMT level applied to the shirt.

• The color logo may also be used on Navy Shirts and Navy/Black Jackets with the words “North” and “Ambulance” embroidered in a light gray to stand out from the dark colored material. The words “Fork” and the Shield should be embroidered in a color of blue, which is lighter than the garment it is being applied to.

Questions over the acceptable use of a color v. mono color logo may be directed to the Graphic Coordinator or Association Director.

Apparel Logos:

Full Color Logo Continued… Used on Navy colored shirts/jackets with the thread color for the title of North Fork Ambulance lightened to appear on the shirt or jacket. When embroidering the logo, the blue thread used in the Association Shield should match the word “Fork” and the shield should clearly stand out from the color of the fabric so as to not loose the border of the shied. T-Shirt Logos T-Shirts can be decorated with the following logos in white or silver ink. For representations of what the logos look like on shirts, please refer to the apparel selections below.

Front Logo – Small pocket logo

Back Logo – full size across back.

Jacket Logos The Association Crest will only be used on the back of jackets issued by the Board of Directors Only! Windbreakers will receive the single color design while anniversary jackets will be in full color. The words North Form Ambulance and the outer rings in the full color logo shall be white or light gray. Volunteer purchased jackets/windbreakers will have the logo on the front only or you can choose to have the Sweatshirt logo (see below) embroidered/silk screened on the back.

Association Crest

Sweatshirt Logo:

As the front panel of a sweatshirt is larger than that of a jacket, a larger, logo, which designates our service stations, will be applied to all sweatshirts and windbreakers. Crewmembers will have the choice of two logos, regardless of logo chosen; it will be applied to sweatshirts in a light grey or white color and may be screen-printed or embroidered.

1. The first logo utilizes the North Fork Ambulance logo and designates the three stations managed by the Association.

2. The second logo will have the Association crest logo to the left of the designation “EMS” with the stations listed under EMS.

Apparel to be issued by the Board to New/Current Volunteers:

The Board of Directors feels the best way to identify our volunteers as being part of the Association and help keep them safe on scenes, is to give them Association branded apparel.

When an individual joins the Association, he/she will receive the following Apparel items:

• An Association branded baseball cap in one of approved styles, if the volunteer desires a hat. • The volunteer will then choose between two (2) apparel packages for shirts:

o Package “A” will contain a Polo Shirt (mens or women’s style) and one t-shirt (choose from styles) o Package “B” will contain three (3) Association t-shirts (choose from variety of styles)

• An Association branded windbreaker that zips up.

Ordering Apparel

Board Provided Apparel

The Board understands that apparel gets worn out, especially by those volunteers who dedicate themselves to the Association regularly by taking extra shifts each month and volunteering at public events. To help volunteers get the clothing they need to stay looking sharp, a “Staff Apparel Order Form” has been implemented.

This form will be available at the Ambulance Stations, Lasting Impressions and Rocky Mountain Locksmith and Embroidery; the only two embroidery shops authorized to embroider/produce North Fork Ambulance branded apparel. Addresses and contact information are listed below.

Page 16: North Fork Ambulance Logo · North Fork Ambulance Graphic Standards | Revised October 2015 2 Graphic Usage ... The Association’s official motto/tagline is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors

When a crewmember needs new apparel they will need to visit one of these merchants and discuss what they need and complete the order form at the merchant. The order form will then be kept on hand at the Merchant and returned to the North Fork Ambulance Business Office with the Invoice for the apparel ordered so the Executive Director/Business Office can track apparel purchases.

Due to the cost of apparel, volunteers are encouraged to only request additional apparel when absolutely necessary. The director will keep a log of apparel issued to volunteers on EMS Toolkit and if records indicate an individual has a wide variety of new apparel and more is requested the request will be denied.

Replacement apparel must be ordered with the “Staff Apparel Order Form” and will allow the volunteer to choose between Package A or Package B. An allotment of baseball caps and windbreakers will be distributed to the Stations each year. Crewmembers in need of a hat/windbreaker should contact their station captain. These items will also be given out at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in the fall.

Purchasing Additional Association Branded Apparel

Crewmembers can purchase additional North Fork Ambulance branded apparel such as t-shirts, long-sleeve t-shirts, polo shirts, dress shirts, jackets or sweatshirts to wear while on-call for the Association. The cost of embroidery/silk screening any of these products is solely up to the individual requesting them and must strictly adhere to these standards.

Apparel found not in compliance with these standards will not be branded with the Association’s logo. Hats: A volunteer may have their own hat embroidered with the Association design if it meets the following apparel design requirements:

• Primary color must be navy, black or tan,

• Accent colors may be any color found in the full-color version of the Association’s logo or a slightly lighter version of that color or camouflage accents,

• Hats cannot have competing graphics or vulgar images/slogans on them. Patriotic/flag and EMS graphics that don’t compete with the Association logo will be allowed,

• The Association Logo should never be embroidered on a hat in the same color as the hat or any hat which has a graphic across the embroidery panel of the hat which would distract from the logo.

Shirts The Association will provide volunteers with a choice of shirts to wear as outlined above. Each volunteer will have the choice between two packages, one that will include a polo shirt and one t-shirt or they may choose a package with three t-shirts.

The Board has also adopted and approved a long-sleeve dress shirt which will be given to volunteers who routinely dedicate themselves to the Association and meet minimum standards and volunteer regularly at public events such as events hosting the 911 Express and public relations events. The approved styling of this shirt is outlined below. A board member, station captain or the Executive Director must approve the ordering of a long-sleeve shirt if the Board is paying for the shirt.

Volunteers may purchase any of the approved apparel shirts themselves to have additional shirts. No exceptions to the Association approved apparel regarding t-shirts or polos will be allowed unless the volunteer needs a specific type of fabric.

Page 17: North Fork Ambulance Logo · North Fork Ambulance Graphic Standards | Revised October 2015 2 Graphic Usage ... The Association’s official motto/tagline is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors

North Fork Ambulance Graphic Standards | Revised October 2015 17

Our attempt is to make all shirts look as similar as possible and individuals buying random designs and colors defeats the uniformity of our apparel.

The one shirt where the volunteer has the ability to choose the fabric, style and manufacturer of the shirt is the dress/button up shirt. The volunteer may have the Association logo embroidered on a dress/button up shirt of their choosing as long as it is:

• Long or short sleeve that buttons all the way to the collar • Solid tan or Navy or tan/navy with an accent of white, tan, or a color found in the Association logo. • Shirts may not have a pattern, which would make the logo hard to read (ie – large plaid print).

The following are prohibited on Association branded apparel:

• Shirts cannot have other graphics on them; no logos, slogans or other emblems will be allowed unless shirt is EMS related.

o Shirts containing other EMS insignia must be approved by the Executive Director or Graphic Coordinator prior to being branded with Association logos.

• Under Armor or similar style skin type clothing or muscle shirts will not be allowed for men or women and women’s shirts may not be cut to display cleavage.

Official Apparel Provided by the Board of Directors

The apparel below shall be designated as the officially approved shirts, hats and jackets by the Association.

Long Sleeve Button-up Shirts

Long sleeve dress/button-up shirts were added to the Apparel selection to give volunteers a professional looking shirt to wear to conferences and training and will be the uniform shift for social events or simply for those individuals who desire this style of shirt to wear at work while on-call.

Volunteer Purchased Acceptable Jackets: EMTs and drivers may purchase jackets on their own to display their volunteer status with the Association and to stay warm while on calls. Any jacket/sweatshirt which a volunteer purchases and wishes to have embroidered/silk screened with the Association logo, must meet these standards and anything which raises questions as to whether it will be allowed or not must be approved by the Executive Director or Graphic Coordinator.

Volunteer Purchased Jackets/Sweatshirts will only have the Association Logo on the front of the jacket/sweatshirt. No logos will be applied to the back of jackets. However, the sweatshirt logo can be applied to either the front or back of sweatshirts. The back of jackets and the large Association Crest design is reserved specifically for those jackets paid for and awarded to crewmembers by the Board of Directors. Requirements:

o Primary color must be Navy,

o Acceptable secondary colors include navy, black, white, tan/khaki/stone and green or copper – any color found in the Association’s logo (does not have to match exactly).

o No bright/lime colors will be allowed unless an accent color on zipper, seam, etc is one of approved secondary colors – when in doubt consult with the merchant or the Graphic Coordinator.

o Volunteers who purchase “EMS” branded sweatshirts jackets with a Star of Life on them may keep the star of life on the back, however the Association logo will still only be applied to the front. All Jackets with EMS lettering on them must be pre-approved by the Graphic Coordinator or Director. Any sweatshirt/jacket with artistic recreations of the Star of Life will not be allowed.

o Crewmembers can have the letters EMS or EMT if the crewmember is a certified EMT, applied to the sleeve of the jacket. Such lettering can be reflective if the crewmember wishes. This lettering must be done in a bold font, preferably PT Sans and must be in a white, grey, or black.

o The purchase of fleece jackets is discouraged because of their ability to retain fluids.

o It is encouraged for volunteers purchasing expensive jackets, such as Columbia, North Face, 5.11 Tactical etc. to have the jacket pre-approved and check to ensure it can be embroidered before ordering it.

Sweatshirt /Hoodie Logo Approved Styles North Fork Ambulance crewmembers can also purchase hoodies/sweatshirts to wear while on-call or on calls for service. Crewmembers desiring a hoodie or other sweatshirt are encouraged to review the book of styles at Lasting Impressions or Rocky Mountain Locksmith and Embroidery before ordering.

Regardless of brand, sweatshirts/hoodies must meet the following criteria: o Must be navy and may have accent colors of white, black, or gray, or bright green, o Sweatshirts can have hoods or not, it is the preference of the crewmember, o The exterior material cannot be fleece, o Zip up Hoodies will be allowed, however the sweatshirt logo will not be applied due to the zipper and the regular

jacket logo will be applied to any zip up sweatshirt. In this case, the crewmember has the option of having the Sweatshirt logo applied to the back of the sweatshirt.

o Windbreakers that are pullover are included in this category and will be allowed.

Pre-Approved Sweatshirts The following sweatshirts/hoodies have been pre-approved for purchase. Many more styles are available to choose from upon visiting Lasting Impressions or Rocky Mountain Locksmith and Embroidery.
