Dear Friends:
As Mayor of the City and County of Denver, it is my pleasure to extend greetings to all residents of North Denver. North Den-ver is very special to me as it is where I first lived when I moved to Denver in the early 1980’s.
North Denver is known for its cultural diversity, vital business districts and historic significance. The neighborhood boasts some of Denver’s finest shops, restaurants, galleries, and historic housing, as well as treasured public assets like Sloan’s Lake and the newly renovated Woodbury Branch library.
This is a very exciting time for North Denver as its beauty has drawn new residents, housing, and commercial amenities to the area. The Tennyson Street corridor has been selected as a pilot district for Denver’s Neighborhood Marketplace Initiative, a city-wide initiative to strengthen business districts and their surrounding neighborhoods. Throughout the next year, the City’s Office of Economic Development will work closely with Tennyson corridor merchants, businesses, property owners and neighbor-hood representatives to create a shared vision for the district’s future growth and expansion. Building on the character of Denver’s unique districts and articulating what Denver can become will strengthen all of Denver and enhance the quality of life for all of the Mile High City’s residents.
Sincerely,
John W. HickenlooperMayor

After seven years as Council-woman for District 9, I have to say that each day I find
something about North Denver to be proud of. Since I last wrote for the North Denver Resource Guide in 2009 I’ve been busy addressing all manner of city issues with fewer resources; the state of the city is much like the state of our local households and even though we have less to work with, we still love our community and do all we can to make it livable and vibrant.
Many of you know my history: I’ve spent pretty much all of my life in North Denver, graduating from North High School and later earning my bachelor’s degree from Adams State College and my Master of Social Work degree from the University of Denver. Given the strong roots I have in District 9, I am passionate about caring for it.
Here is a bit of news regarding what we’ve been up to this year: The Central Street Promenade street improvements slated to be built by the end of next year.are in design stage. We’re working with neighbors and property owners in the area to make sure we incorporate pedestrian and bike friendly improvements that will encourage more safe activity in our streets. Improvements will include more stop signs, crosswalks, curb bulb-outs, ramps, and medians to slow traffic and provide pedestrian refuge.
The Station Area Plan for the Fox and 41st FasTracks station along the Gold commuter rail line was approved by Council. Our great planning staff came up with an exciting plan that reflects the livability features the stakeholders identified as important for growing the area and taking advantage of the benefits transit oriented development can offer. I am very excited about this station and the possibility of providing access to the station for all North Denver neighborhoods. It is one stop away, after all, from Denver Union Station – the nation’s central transpor-tation hub. I will stay involved with the plan’s implementation by encouraging economic development benefits for the kinds of residential and retail projects the plan calls for.
I was recently invited to present to the United States Senate Caucus on economic issues and took advantage of encouraging our federal legislators to embrace Livable Communities – the kind that the 41st and Fox plan calls for- and promoting efforts around
sustainable urban agriculture to help combat the childhood obesity epidemic. You might notice that new edible landscaping is going in at various small Denver Parks and Recreation areas in District 9. In partnership with GrowLocal, we’ve encouraged Parks and Recreation to promote education about the benefits of growing your own food. We’ve had overwhelming volunteer support over the last year with this effort.
I want to especially thank all of you who are active participants in all of community issues and events in North Denver. The care and attention you all give to these efforts makes our com-munity a truly enjoyable place to live, work and play.
I am still Chair of the FasTracks committee, but this year I am also Vice-Chair of the Neighborhood, Community & Business Revitalization committee and sit on the Blueprint Denver committee.
My special assignments include:
•16th Street Mall Steering Committee•Board of Trustees for Winter Park Trust•Denver’s Road Home•Denver Union Station Project Authority Board•Downtown 2027 Committee•Downtown Denver Partnership Retail Task Force•Graffiti Task Force, Chair•Parking Policy Council
I would love to hear how things are going in your neighborhood! Give me a call or drop me a line.

Welcome to North Denver
Welcome to the communities and businesses of North Denver, an expansive area that includes most of the neighborhoods north and west of

Berkeley
The Berkeley neighborhood was established in 1892 as the town of North Denver. During the late 1800’s the city of Denver grew closer to this area, annexing the
land east and south of the town. The concerned town council changed the name to Berkeley as all of the surrounding area was North Denver. The town was known for its pure air, rich soil, and advanced water system. During this time the area was rural, most residents had back yard wells and some still exist today. The area that has grown up around Berkeley includes the business district in addition to the numerous shops and restaurants along Tennyson Street.
There were several attempts to annex Berkeley, made by the city of Denver. Ten years after the incorporation of Berkeley, in 1902 was when the state legislature created the City and County of Denver. Without a vote of the people Berkeley was automatically included as part of the City of Denver. There are two distinct areas of the Berkeley neighborhood, Lower Berkeley south of the lake and on the north side Berkeley Hill. Today the neighborhood division is even larger due to I-70 running through the middle.
William Lang was a prominent architect known for designing beautiful homes in the Capitol Hill area during the late 1800’s. In Berkeley there are almost twenty William

Lang designed homes remaining today. A group of these unique and stylish houses may be found on Wolff Street just north of 38th Avenue.
Other features of this beautiful neighborhood include Berkeley Lake and Park. Built in 1913 are a large pavilion and bathhouse, these were at-tractions for many people, drawing large crowds and lake swimmers. The lake was also a place for ice skating in the winter and included a warming house for people to rent skates and escape the cold outside air. In recent years the city has made
additions and improvements to the park including a youth sports field, a recreation center, a bandstand, volley-ball courts, and an off leash dog park.
Berkeley today is a bustle of excitement and acvity with a variety of boutiques, coffee houses, and art galleries. It hosts the art walk on the First Friday of every month. Berkeley is a taste of North Denver at its finest including interesting food, amazing art, and friendly people.

Lower Downtown
The LoDoNA (formerly the St. Charles Neighborhood Group) has represented the residents of Lower Downtown since 1986. The recent name change occurred
because not too many people now living and working downtown knew that the name St. Charles came from the first permanent settlement in Denver, established in September, 1858. Initially formed to represent residents of the Lower Downtown Historic District, the LoDoNA’s current boundaries are 20th Street, the alley between Market and Larimer Streets, Speer Boulevard and 9th Street, and the Platte River.
The Lower Downtown Neighborhood Association (LoDoNA) is a city-registered neighborhood organization representing residents in Lower Downtown and the Central Platte Valley. The LoDoNA is a non-profit organization committed to understanding the needs and views of LoDo and Central Platte Valley residents and then represents those views before city planning organizations, city and state liquor license agencies, city council and other local governmental organizations.
In past years, the LoDoNA has spoken up for a wide variety of residential concerns in our neighborhoods. We sponsor social events and outdoor movies, organize charitable projects, and holiday projects and events to benefit the less fortunate.
Your membership fee helps us communicate with our LoDo neighbors and with city officials on critical issues. Visit our website to become a member at www.lodona.org.

Jefferson Park
Overlooking the Denver Skyline, the Jefferson Park community is situated just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown traffic while remaining only
a 15 minute walk to LoDo excitement and even closer to many of Denver’s numerous attractions.
Originally built for Denver’s affluent society as an escape from the brothels and opium dens that littered Denver’s old streets during the gold rush era, Jefferson Park was carved out as the original town of highland. Bordered by the Platte River to the east, Colfax avenue to the south, Federal to
the west and Speer Blvd to the north, the area anchored by it vibrant park and evolving town square is one of the few neighborhoods in close proximity to Denver’s city center with accessible pricing geared towards community based growth.
Due to a strong neighborhood association, Jefferson Park United Neighbors (JPUN), Jefferson Park residents have the opportunity to take part in monthly happy hours, Christmas/ Holiday parties, and a yearly Jefferson Park Day festival, which includes bands, barbecue, games and even a bouncing castle for the kids. The event usually attracts around 200 people from the neighborhood who come out to share and celebrate being a part of the community.
In addition, new neighbors are encouraged to take part in mingling their voice with those of long-term resident of the

community at monthly meetings, held the first Tuesday of every month at Riverside Baptist Church, as it continues to develop as a multi-cultural and mixed demographic community. With everyone from single young urban professionals to families of five, great grandmothers to students just scrapping by, Jefferson Parks ages match its dwellings. New high-end condo developments are popping up next to turn of the century single family homes that provide eclectic living opportunities for all income levels and styles.
The same can also be said of access to entertainment. Jefferson Park is home to the Denver Broncos’ Invesco Field

at Mile High, Denver’s Children’s Museum, The Downtown Aquarium, Adam’s Mystery Play House and is close to Elitch Garden’s, the Pepsi Center and Denver’s downtown attractions. In addition, for those who would rather enjoy a casual walk or jog, Jefferson Park neighborhood is host to the Platte River where bikers, runners, Kayakers and of course kids with their tubes share in summer’s sun. While Elite Street Collective, works with the neighborhood to provide reduced rate lessons in dance and theater for aspiring thespian youths.
On those days when the work day has made it clear that
it is time for some food and fun. Jefferson Park residents are also able to take advantage of a number of great restaurants. Whether enjoying the massive margaritas at El Senior Sol, enjoying one of Denver’s largest Patio’s at Brooklyn’s, sitting down for authentic Mexican fair at Araujo’s or simply enjoying some of Denver’s favorites such as La Loma and Man vs. Food’s Jack N’ Grill residents will never go hungry for lack of places to go.
As one of the oldest communities in Denver, Jefferson Park and its neighborhood association continues to help fos-ter the fellowship of neighbors from every walk of life and encourages those who would like to share in our neighbor-hoods celebration of diversity and opportunity.
For more information on moving to or working with the community of Jefferson Park feel free to contact us at [email protected] or write JPUN communications chair at joe_boven hotmail.com.

West Highland
The West Highland Neighborhood bounded by West 38th Avenue, Federal Boulevard, West 29th Avenue, and Sheridan Boulevard is one of the 12 neighborhoods
in Northwest Denver designated by the city. True to its name, the neighborhood rises from the south and east to one of the highest points in Denver at West 32nd Avenue and Tennyson Street. The Town of Highlands on Denver’s western border at Gallup Avenue (now Zuni Street) was incorporated in 1875. Fifteen years later, the town annexed the area west of its Homer Street (now Lowell Boulevard) border to Sheridan Boulevard. Construction accelerated in the annexed area, known as the “West Highlands”.

Following a decline after World War II to the end of the 20th Century, the neighborhood saw resurgence with new families moving into the neighborhood. Population grew by 8% between 2000 and 2005 to an estimated 9,251. The resurgence was fueled in part by redevelopment of the former 27 acre Elitch amusement park. Extensive landmark preservation in the neighborhood over the years includes designation of eight houses, Highlands United Methodist Church, Saint Dominic’s Church, Edison Elementary School, Elitch Theatre, and Woodbury Branch Library as Denver Landmarks.
The thriving West 32nd Avenue business district is one of the few neighborhood business districts in Denver. By the 1920s, West 32nd Avenue was paved and the district looked much like we see it today with a mix of residences and businesses.
Ten churches, a branch post office, two schools, a branch library, two parks and a senior recreation center serve the neighborhood. The Edison Elementary School started with four rooms and a basement on Quitman Street in 1892. The building with additions was demolished 1925 and replaced by the present landmark building in 1925.
The historic Woodbury Branch Library shares Highland Park at West 32nd Avenue and Federal Boulevard. The park is part of the Highland Place Subdivision that was platted in 1988 and opened up the area to intensive real estate development. The one-block Pfedesteller Park sits high on the hill at West 33rd Avenue and Wolff Street.

Lower Highland
With its borders spanning from Speer Blvd. to the south and 38th Avenue to the north, & west from I-25 to Federal Blvd., the Highland neighborhood
is one of Denver’s most eclectic and desirable areas to live and work. With lots of new building, historic preservation efforts and an influx of unique eateries, boutiques and other businesses, Highland is fast becoming one of Denver’s true gems.
Instrumental in Highlands growth and desirability, is the Registered Neighborhood Organization, Highland United Neighbors, Inc. (H.U.N.I). HUNI has a board of 13 directors and an ever growing membership of close to 400.
HUNI sponsors a monthly social networking event called the HUNI Hour that takes place at a different Highland venue. Throughout the year HUNI also sponsors many other Family events, including 4th of July parades, pumpkin
carving parties, Easter Egg hunts and this year we added a weekly Farmers Market. Located on the 1500 block of Boulder Street, vendors selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, to flowers, salsa, organic baby food and homemade soaps can be found every Saturday morning from 9am – 11am. The Farmers Market takes place weekly between June – October. Information about HUNI and links to membership sign up, an electronic version of our newsletter, the HUNI Bee, and much more can be found at: www.denverhighland.org.

Get a scoop of homemade ice cream, bouquet of flowers, traditional Mexican pastry or even test drive a new scooter.
Admire the architectural styles as varied as anywhere in the city. Whether you are fond of Victorians, bungalows, Denver Squares, row homes or modern lofts – it’s all here, not to mention the urban gardens, community parks and a recreational center featuring a brand new pool. All this and more is available in Highland and all within walking distance!
So come experience Highland, you’ll be glad you did!

Denver Bookbinding Company2715 17th St. (303) 455-5521
Denver Bookbinding Company in the lower highlands has a long history behind it. Established in 1929, Denver Bookbinding Company is a family-owned business that spans generations and is one of Colorado’s women owned businesses.
The heritage of old world crafts-manship is still practiced, but with modern enhancements. The arts of hand binding and leatherwork-ing are now aided by the best computer systems and the high-est precision machinery avail-able. The marriage of traditional arts and high technology ensure con-sistent quality products.
Denver Bookbinding Company provides a large number of products, from creating new yearbooks, theses, and unique printed volumes to repairing worn textbooks and Bibles. They range from simple bindings covered in buckram, a cloth used specifically for binding, to elaborate gold stamped leather books with all the trimmings.
The bindery now offers bookbinding and other craft classes to the public on selected weekends which can be browsed at www.denverbook.com.
At Denver Bookbinding Company our mission is to: Preserve Documents, Create an Image, Save Memories. Call us today to find out how we can help preserve your memories for future generations.

Sunnyside
Life is sunnier in.....
Sunnyside United Neighbors Inc.
Although it’s only two square miles, big things are happening in the Sunnyside neighborhood these days. Just north across W. 38th Ave. from Highlands,
Sunnyside is also five minutes from LoDo and a short hop to major highways. In the beginning, the Sunnyside landscape attracted Italian vegetable farmers (around 1900), and many of their old fruit trees still survive. Today, remarkable gardens and mature tree-lined streets surround historic homes, most of which were built before 1930. The diverse residents and “front porch” street design make Sunnyside a true neighborhood.
Always in transition, Sunnyside is now home for many residents — mostly young couples and families drawn to Sunnyside’s historic charm and urban convenience. By the end of 2015, Sunnyside and Highland will also be

served by RTD rail transit to both Wheat Ridge/ Arvada and Longmont/ Boulder, with a station near 39th Ave. and Inca Street. Convenient pub-lic transportation will bring even more exciting development to Sunnyside.
Sunnyside is represented by one of Denver’s strongest registered neighborhood organizations, Sunnyside United Neighbors Inc. (SUNI).
SUNI was formed in 1989 to save the landmark Smedley Elementary School (1901). SUNI holds 9 community meetings and 6 Board meetings annually, and it produces a monthly email newsletter. SUNI works actively with the City on FasTracks, code and zoning issues, tree planting, liquor licensing, graffiti control, etc., and enjoys excellent cooperation from Police District 1, located in the neighborhood.
Meeting new neighbors and having fun are also priorities in Sunnyside. Check out the SUNI website for information about upcoming events and meetings, including Sunnyside Sippers — monthly happy hour at local restaurants. All are welcome.
We hope to see you in the Sunnyside of town!
For more information about SUNI, please visit www.sunnysidedenver.org.

Conflict is inevitable. Violence is not!
If you are human, you will experi-ence conflict. This may sound like a grim statement but it is a reality. Conflict is a normal part of everyone’s day to day life. Wherever there are people there will be misunderstandings, miscommunications, differences of opinion and emotional ups and downs. These day-to-day conflicts, however, need not be harmful or negative. Whether in our families, schools, workplaces or neigh-borhoods, if we have options and skills we all have the capacity to turn conflicts to opportunities. We can use conflict as a tool to creatively solve problems and build more positive relationships with those we live, work and play with on a daily basis.
The Conflict Center’s mission is to reduce levels of physical, verbal and emotional violence. We believe that from the cradle to the grave we can all benefit from having more options and skills for managing conflict in fun and creative ways.
The Conflict Center offers regular classes for teens and adults
at our building at 4140 Tejon Street. We also have an extensive resource library, dedicated to peace making and nonviolence, available to the general public. Programs are also offered in schools, nonprofits and businesses throughout the metro area. We make conflict fun by using participatory and experiential approaches to help people learn and apply these practical skills in their day to day lives.
There are also many fun and challenging volunteer opportuni-ties. Be part of creating a com-munity where diverse people can come together to explore, learn and teach the skills that are essential to create a more peaceful world.
By helping people add tools to their toolboxes for communi-cation, problem solving and relationship-building The Conflict Center believes that we can span cultures, language barriers and generations. Come by and visit us and learn more about how we make conflict fun.
