All over the world, there is increasing demand for
fresh water, and in so many places like never before,
water is the new gold.
Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth.
Periodic drought has caused critical water shortages,
leading to severe water restrictions in major cities
such as Sydney and Melbourne (with populations
comparable to San Francisco and Washington DC).
Authorities are compelled to restrict water usage
in homes.
Against this backdrop, Caroma developed the
technology to conserve water usage in one of the
biggest water wasters in the home, the toilet. This
technology was ‘Washdown Dual Flush’. In 1980,
with an Australian government grant, Caroma’s
two button dual fl ush toilets were tested in a small
South Australian town. With dual fl ush volumes of
2.9/1.5 gallons (11/5.5 liters), the trial resulted in each
household saving 8457 gallons (32,000 liters) of water
each year. This led to the mandatory introduction of
dual fl ush toilets across most of the country.
Further recognizing the need for high performance
in fl ush capacity, Caroma redesigned the traditional
pan and tank to develop high fl ush effi ciency with less
water. In 1993, Caroma introduced the 1.6/0.8 gallon
(6/3 liter) dual fl ush tank, which soon became the
Australian national standard.
Caroma has since established a reputation as the
international authority in water saving dual fl ush
technology.

Caroma understands the signifi cant impact
that toilet usage has on a household’s water
consumption. Faced with the reality of continued
global water shortages, Caroma directed its
attention to potential solutions for all homes and
has continued to improve its dual fl ush technology.
Caroma’s unrelenting commitment to water
conservation has been the driving force behind the
company ever since.
At the core of Caroma’s product development and
commitment to performance is the conviction that a
toilet must be viewed as a complete system. Caroma
calls this technology ‘Matched Performance’ and it
allows Caroma to continually push the boundaries of
high performance, water-effi cient sanitary ware.
Caroma’s leadership position in innovation is
unmistakeable, from the introduction of the world’s
fi rst truly effective two button dual fl ush toilets,
through to the Cube3 Ultra urinal. The Cube3 high-
effi ciency urinal (HEU) uses 0.15 gallon (0.5 litre)
of water per fl ush and operates using new sensor
technology, which eliminates ghost fl ushing.

Compared to today’s standard 1.6 gallon single fl ush toilets
(6 liters per fl ush), Caroma’s advanced dual fl ush technology
consists of a 0.8 gallon fl ush (3 liters per fl ush) for liquid waste
and a 1.6 gallon fl ush for solids (6 liters per fl ush).
A Caroma toilet uses up to 72% (approx. 18,000 gallons/69,000
liters annually) less water than a traditional 3.5 gallon fl ush
(13 liters per fl ush).

City of Brisbane, Australia>
The city of Brisbane in Queensland Australia, with approximately
one million inhabitants, mandated the use of the 2.4/1.2 gallon
(9/4.5 liter) dual fl ush toilet in 1990. Following the further
development of Caroma technology, use of the 1.6/0.8 gallon
(6/3 liter) dual fl ush toilet was mandated in 1993.
The overall result was a reduction in water consumption from
63 gallons (240 liters) per person per day, to 47 gallons (180
liters) per person per day. With no other item mandated, these
remarkable results equated to a reduction of nearly 5,800
gallons (22,000 liters) per person per year.

CAROMA DUAL FLUSH
Caroma’s unique dual fl ush system is simple to use,
comprising of two buttons - half fl ush and full fl ush .
One button releases 0.8 gallons per fl ush (gpf) (3 litres per
fl ush) for liquid and paper waste. The other button releases
1.6 gpf (6 lpf) for solid waste. Caroma dual fl ush systems are
reliable and proven after rigorous testing.

Currently in the United States, 36 states face water
shortages by 2013 without drought conditions.
In North America, one-third of domestic water
consumption is through toilet use. With nearly 100
million high-consumption (over 1.6gpf/6lpf) toilets in
use in the United States alone, it is estimated that the
introduction of HETs will save up to 900 billion gallons
(3.4 trillion liters) of water each year.
During the early 1990s, ultra-low-fl ush toilets
(ULFT) were mandated in the United States with
poor results. Unable to produce fl ushing effi ciency
while saving water, most models failed to produce
effective results. Caroma USA introduced dual fl ush
to North America in 1998. With proven blockage-free
fl ush performance, Caroma toilets have established
a reputation as a trusted partner in refi t and
replacement programs throughout Canada and
the United States.
In 2004 the HET, High Effi ciency Toilet (1.28gpf),
voluntary standard was introduced in the United
States. As opposed to other toilet brands, all Caroma
toilets meet this standard with an average fl ush
volume of under one gallon (3.8 liters) per fl ush.
Caroma’s contributions to North America have
been further documented by a leading Canadian
environmental consultant. It has been estimated that
the reduction in maintenance costs can be equal to
that of water saving when using Caroma’s dual fl ush
toilets. Commercial buildings such as offi ce blocks,
refi tted with Caroma toilets have measured water
savings up to 60%. Additionally, water use reductions
in hotels have been measured at as high as 50%.
