CLASS DESIGN PROPOSAL TOULON,FRANCE TRAVEL ABROAD STUDY PROGRAM

A proposal has been undertaken 40 area inside the Porte d’Italie on the eastern edge of the old city of Toulon. As an urban design initiative the overarching goal is To make a welcoming entrance to the old city from the east, To read we’ve a series of buildings at great variance of scales and using to a comprehensive and comprehensible fabric, To make this entrance become part of the historic such as pedestrian zone. The site is bounded on the east by ramparts remaining from the city’s oldest defences on the west by a series of typical Toulonnaise vernacular mixed use buildings which are tall and slender party wall buildings with fairly consistent patterns of fenestration, This on the south by an elevated complex of shopping mall, hotels and sports facil-ities opened in the 1990’s And undercut by high-speed tunnels comprising most of the south end of the site, and on the north By the wall and vernacular buildingsCurving west on either side of what is in essence a high-speed motorway leading to tun-nels under the shopping complex. There isAnna Ray and short of significantly different building types, scales and eras with the area between given over to speeding cars coming down the boulevard and careering in through tutone’s built through the ramparts.

TOULON CLASS DESIGN PROPOSAL TOULON,FRANCETRAVEL ABROAD STUDY PROGRAM TRAVEL ABROAD STUDY PROGRAM

Full energy was put into focusing on the newly imagined Place Partagee. we were advised that french planning circles a street or place designed to accommodate both automobiles and pedestrians, is called partager, the French word meaning to share. the design proposes a place mediating between the porte and the line of vernacular build-ings to the west, it also re-institutes the traditional open area just inside the principal gates of fortified towns to

provide space for visiting vendors and for the mustering of troops. Nestled between new proposed mixed use buildings to the north and south, the area between the two buildings is at grade at the north end and, as the land falls off to the south , is raised to the south . A fountain is on axis with the Porte, and a path of paving stones, in a contrasting color to the field stone proposed for the area, leads to it from the porte. A line of trees on its western area extends the proposed planting pattern of the remains of Boulevard St Bernard and provides a shaded area for part of the place. To the north of ilot Clemencet, a bus transfer station was designed. As buses would no longer be passing through the project site to the south, it was conceived as a shaded place for people to wait for public transportation and allow the buses to turn back to the larger roadways within and without the historic district, it is situated within the fast expanse of Avenue St Bernard. It is propsed that one of the lanes of vehicular traffic be converted to a bicycle only route, From the single vehicluar entrance would be greeted by a new builiding which would effectively reduce the speed of automobiles .

The Building proposed is a mixed use building. On the uppers floors are a mix of subsidised and market rate housing units. On the ground floor are commerical units and, along its eastern edge a colonnade for pedestrian use. At the midpoint along the east elevation the design team passed back a gift of the French people to Viriginia: Thomas Jefferson’s hemispherical domed aedicula at the entrance to Pavilion IX at the University of Virginia was itself modeled on Cluade Niicholas Ledoux’s design for the Hotel de Gui-mad in Paris. For Les Cassernes, the inside face of the Vauban Wall is punctuated by entrances to a series of vaults on either side of larger portals. Currently in use a cabaret a meeting room in which the design team worked a cafe, and stair leading to the top of the ramparts, As time and construction have led to a gradual rise in grade, the entrances area below sidewalk level, accessed by stairs to stone parvis. Particular to the south of the porte, the area seems a bit of cul-de-sac, squeezed as it is by a vehicular ramp leading to the elevated places of the Centre Mayol. We hoped to encourage more lively use of the area, although un-derstanding thier “client”’s admontion that it would probably prove advisable to allow the parvis to be gated after business hours, Toward this end they Re-conceive the ramp access to the top of the ramparts.

ADAPTATION TO SEA LEVEL RISE THE HAGUE NORFOLK,VA FOURTH YEAR

WALLThe objective is to design a wall around the shoreline of the Ghent Neighborhood in Norfolk that would respond to the rising sea level thats occurs at the body of water called “The Hague”. The wall is a combina-tion of mainly water actuated walls in 150 ft increments that rise around three to five feet until it meets with the fixed wall pieces which are in 10 ft increments. This project was done by a group of Hampton Universi-ty Department of Architecture Students in conjunction with Old Dominion University Department of Civil Engineering Students. Due to the efforts of both groups, we were awarded the 2015 Norfolk Environmental Action Award by the Norfolk Environmental Commission.
