2005 the production "autumn sonata" from Ingmar Bergman under cooperationof artists from Sweden, Norway, and Germany, the festival concept rose, toexpand and to strengthen this artistic cooperation the festival idea was born.From this idea Ricarda Ciontos developed a pilot project for a smaller festival,in which in 2006 colleagues participated from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finlandand Germany from various areas in theatre, dance and music. This pilot projectwas supported by the Senate Berlin/Cultural exchange and was followed witha general large interest. A great artistic potential was recognised.Out of this pilot project, the two artistic leaders Ricarda Ciontos (actress) andKatja Kettner (dramatic adviser) developed a long-term strategy for the NorthWind Festival. The Nordic embassies supported this idea by making it possiblefor them go on research trips to their countries and with that they expressedtheir interest and trust in the artistic work.

‘A Nordic Festival, this is unique!’ a man said to us in Sweden. Why actually?How much do we know about traditions and developments in our Nordicneighbouring countries? We journeyed there, and experienced a lot of intereston the spot and support for this festival. We have seen many different artisticprojects, treasures, which were mostly completely unknown to us.

One thinks of the north, as being usually associated very quickly with endlesswoods, deeply snow-covered winter landscapes with idyllic frame-houses in thesnow, deep blue lakes and seas, solitude, seclusion, originality, in closenessnature... But also extreme weather conditions, that in the people, brings outextremes in human relations … one thinks of the texts from Ibsen, Strindberg,Jon Fosse, and at the same time on Hans Christan Andersen, the fairytales andmythology of Edda, to Odin, Freya and Thors Hammer ... to trolls, elves… onremote prehistoric times, with raw and wild Vikings, who withstood the natureforces and discovered America …Is there in the modern Nordic art scene an expression or sound, a special colourthat reflects this?We like to believe our own clichés, isn’t the north an ideal projection area for thestressed, tired-out and noise plagued Central European city-dweller? And whatclichés perhaps exist on the other side about Germany and Berlin?

We want to look more in-depth at these clichés and search, if our ideas of the"north" can be found again in theatre, in dance, in Site Specific projects or alsoin the music.We want to run contrary against the clichés and at once begin to look at the northin which consists of countries that differentiate and to look exactly, whichtendencies and developments, which strengths are found in the single thecountries, which also contrasts, at the end we can then perhaps again be able torediscover new things in common.

We have journeyed through the theatres, dance, and music landscapes of Finland,Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland and have on the spot arranged theprogramme.

We want to show aesthetic developments in the countries, on the search for newmeans of expression in the interplay between dance, theatre, performance, andmusic. Through the connection within the productions and the conception of thecrossover programme choice, we want to acquire new audience circles for singleevent places.By us responding on one hand to the already available audience circle at everyvenue and on the other hand to integrate the parts of the programme, whichrefer beyond this, so networking is promoted between the artists and theiraudience.

On a long-term basis we build up a network, which promotes and deepens thecontact, the exchange, and the cooperation between the Nordic countries andGermany, and can give new surprising insight into the different theatre traditions.

Through that on the one hand cooperation projects between Nordic and Germanartists can arise, which wouldn’t have been possible, on the other hand withinthe next years a North Wind Festival taking place in Germany and the Nordiccountries at the same time can be designed as a future fete de la musique.

The festival will take place every two years.

The choice of the programme was developed thanks to the support of the NordicEmbassies in Berlin and the countries Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway andIceland. And in creative exchange with the Svenska Institute, the Finland Institute,The Black Box Theatre Norway, P@rt Denmark, Modern Dance Theatre Stockholm,Dansenshus Stockholm, Zodiak Finland, Grusomhetens Theatre Oslo, ArtcentrumReykjavik the theatre festival in Tampere Finland, The Icelandic Cultural Ministry,the Icelandic Dance Company, Riksteatern Stockholm, Dans og Scenekunst Oslo…Thanks to the sponsor Iceland Express. And a special thanks for the numerousstimulating conversations with colleagues in all these travelled countries withwhom we could start to build up a network.

Each step, eachattempt to meet another person contains the possibility of acceptance, of a newstart but it also encompasses the danger of mistrust, aggression and painfulrejection.August has been inspired by the classical image of the clown with the red noseand cheeky tongue - but then leaves behind all the clichés and instead showshow unpredictable, paradoxical and sometimes even fatal the journey to thecircus ring can be.

During the last years the famous jazz singer Caroline Henderson did not onlyimpress her audience with her unique voice - in which strength with sensualityare combined– but mainly with her stylistic diversity. The former singer of theband “Ray Dee Ohh” released her first solo album “Cinemataztic” in 1995 whichgained high recognition.In 1998 “Metamorphing” was released and in 2003 the album “Don’t explain”followed. Her musical change with “Back to the roots” – an album with smallerinstrumentation –was also highly praised by the critics.With “Made In Europe” in 2005 she brought out an internationally acclaimedrelease. The album was released in Sweden, Norway, Poland, Germany, France,Spain, Portugal, Japan, the USA and Canada.

The dramatic poem for five voices DEAD, DEAD AND VERY DEAD is ameditation on cultural suicide. The scenario is set during the morning and eveningof a frowned upon high society wedding between 20 year old man and a forty-five year old singer – who with her sexual powers has seduced him as well ashis father. Her voice has been ruined by alcohol and drugs.Her madness drives her to an act of utmost savage - she turns against the familydog whose fidelity enrages her. She finds an accomplice in a priest whoseweakness - his missing believe - turns him into the caricature of his own profession.DEAD, DEAD AND VERY DEAD is a tragedy about desire and loss in whichcourse a voiceless singer develops the ability to sing a swan song on herself andsociety.

Holland House combines digital stage technology and precision with an organicsensibility. Contemporary opera and drama are as much part of their repertoireas new interpretations of all time classics and the newly developed plays.

EDDA – THE PROPHECY – is a Swedish/Icelandic co-production of Swedishcomposer Sten Sandell and Icelandic artist Sverrir Gudjonsson.The old Icelandic saga from around 900 BC is encountered by the modern man.The project is divided into three parts using the music as a driving force. Thanksto the actress Stina Ekbald the text will be performed in German language inBerlin. The innocent childlike voice of the actress becomes part of the soundscape.

Former Sugarcubes member Einar Örn Benediktsson is going to produce andpresent an Icelandic music night. Based on Icelandic rhymes sung by SteindurAnderson the performance gives an insight into the experimental Icelandic musicscene from Mugissons Blues up to the music of his own band Ghostigital.A musical performance leading up to a wild party.

In FORESTILLINGER Kaspar Daugaard Poulsen manages to givea very funny and unusual view on choreography.Club Fisk 2003 by Kaspar Daugaard Poulsen was founded as a network of youngdancers and choreographers and works with various choreographic resources.Its aim is to get rid of the common perception that modern dance theatre isgenerally inaccessible, heavy-weight and by those means elitist.

LANGBRÓK is a dance production by Lára Stefánsdóttir and Gudni Franzson.Hallgerdur Langbrók from the Njáls saga is possibly one of the most notoriouswomen in Icelandic literature. Raised in a male society she is her father Höskuldur’sjewel. She is flirtatious and likes to show off her long hair and mysterious eyesand is constantly watched by Pjóstólfur her guard. The saga tells us about herlife with various men who had to give their lives because they didn’t fit intoHallgerdur Langbrók’s world.Lára Stefánsdóttir has been a member of the Icelandic Dance Company for manyyears and now has her own company with Pars Pro Toto.

Being born in 1982, Eeva Muilu is a young dancer and choreographer whosework has already caused quite a stir. Her solo pieces Verminculus and TOOMANY VOICES FOR ONE were shown in Finland as well as abroad where theywere highly praised and got her widely recognised.

TOO MANY VOICES FOR ONE questions life in its brutal and tough form. Thesurprising mixture of text and space creates an electrifying energy on stage.

The team choreographer/actorhas traced back old movement patterns of the actor’s former roles and replacedthem by new movements.

Variationson the always recurring misfortunes in childhood and marriage.After the SISUtheater’s last performance of “Sonate im Herbst”, Lars Norén againturns his attention on the structures of relationships within the family andpartnerships in his play “Nachtwache”. Those structures are recognisable for awide audience of different ages since those are very close to their own experiencesand form a microcosm that shapes us all.

The Jo Strømgren kompani was established in 1998. The company quickly grewto one of todays most established and major contemporary dance companies inNorway. Under the direction of Jo Strømgren it’s the company’s aim to developeand perform a wide range of innovative and experimental pieces, which are oftencrossing the line between theatre and dance. The performances are rehearsed bya team of actors and dancers. The company has developed a humorous and veryassociative gibberish which they are speaking in their performances.

The artist duo SIGNA works with their projects at rather unusual and oftendeserted places. They inhabit those places for the time of the performance andtransform them. Starting off from those places they design strong and highlyartificial artworks on the threshold of installation, theatre and performance. Intheir sight-specific installations they manage to create a whole new and complexworld which the audience can experience 24 hours a day. That way the festivalvisitors are invited to walk through this world again and again, to explore it,view it and encounter it.

She putsher coat on the hat stand, picks up some brochures from the floor, potters about,cooks and lets the time pass without anything happening. On the radio listenersare requesting their favourite songs to show their affections to others.A fascinating theatre evening without words. A famous actress very close to heraudience. The performance takes place in an apartment. The audience sits in thisreal environment and is able to observe every blink of the eye, every little gesture,calmness and solitude of that person.

Lars Norén tries to fathomSebastian’s soul which had been hurt by his classmates and to understand hisdeed. An extraordinary monologue with Anne Tismer.

Svenska Institutet presents two dance movies from Sweden.

Centering on people, movement and time, dance films convey an unrivalledsense of the modern age. These selection of films presents choreographers, dancersand directors currently working in Sweden, each of whom exploit the artisticscope offered by new dance cinema in a unique way. They blend the transienceof dance with the intimacy of film, experiment with the plastic of dynamics ofmovement and montage, and expolre both rhythm and visuality. Here, aestheticexpression rooted in the modern era takes the form of realism, absurdism andavant-gardism. Everything is possible!
