Closed-Loop Flow Control Enabled (IMPROVE)

Variation management is at theheart o our OptiBond Solutions orNonwovens. Te goal is to advancethe state-o-the-art in delivery anddispensing o material through

improved process control. Te benetsto our customers are higher-quality products produced aster, moreeciently and at lower cost. Our basic methodology to enable variationmanagement is captured as Measure, Understand and Improve (MUI).

In 2013 we have expanded our portolio o OptiBond Solutions in ourthree product categories:

Controls – Controls can be either melter integrated or standaloneto accommodate variation management capability on new or existing production lines. As mentioned, a number o recent developments ortiy the portolio o control capabilities. VersaBlue Plus melters recently  joined AltaBlue ouch melters to comprise the oerings eaturing melter-integrated fow monitoring and control support; melter-integrated

controls are ideal or new systems, oering the most economical andelegant solutions. Additionally we have released the Concert series standalone controllers. Te Concert fow controllers oer a means toretrot the installed base o melters to enable fow verication and vastly improve control o material delivery, as well as oer fexibility to move a system rom production line to production line.

Intermediate Devices – Tese consist o either active-metering or passive-metering devices. An example o active metering is theGP200 remote metering station, equipped with one or more motor-driven pumps. ruFlow dividers and our new meters represent passivmetering, that is the material fows through a gear set that turns reel

– there is no motor; an encoder and sotware are used to enable fow measurement or control. Te new ruFlow meter is key to enabling the rst step in the MUI process: Measure. Te meter enables real-time measurement with the option to enable closed-loop fow controlIt is compatible with melter-integrated controls and the Concert fowcontrollers. In some cases customers will take the signal directly romthe meter and process it with the parent machine’s PLC. In all casesthe new ruFlow meter helps customers Understand material deliveperormance and their opportunities to Improve.

Point of Application – Again, these devices can be characterizedas either active or passive metering. Te Universal Slice applicator represents an actively-metered design and ruFlow applicators repres

passive metering. Both support production fexibility and stringentadhesive dispensing control.

We continue to pursue opportunities to expand the OptiBond Solutions portolio supporting variation management. Expectadditional new or enhanced products eaturing improved integration ruFlow devices to improve customer value and return on investmen

Best PracticesNozzle Cleaning Tips/Tricks

Please ollow specic instructions in equipment manuals, but a ew aspects o nozzle cleaning are essentially universal.

• Heat adhesive to softening point to ease nozzle removal.• After heating nozzle or immersing in cleaning solution, scrub with

sot, non-metallic brush and wipe with sot cloth.• Gently blow air through orices through mounting side of nozzles

(with the direction o fow).• To clean orices: insert pin-type probe one-size smaller than the

orice in the opposite direction o adhesive fow; do not twist probe when removing.

Additional details and recommended methods or cleaning nozzles areavailable in Nordson’s nozzle cleaning instruction manual.

System Purging Procedure

Tere are numerous reasons to purge your hot melt system:• Routine maintenance to remove char and build-up• When changing adhesive chemistries• When changing adhesives of the same chemistry but unsure about

compatibility o materials

Purging a complete hot melt system – melter/tank, hose and nozzle –a reasonably simple task to keep your system running smoothly.• Drain adhesive from tank and system• Remove, clean and reinstall lter• Fill tank with purge material and heat to specied temperature• Run heated purge material through the hot melt system until mate

appears clear/clean; then drain purge material rom system• Add adhesive to newly clean system

Please reer to equipment manuals or specic instructions or eachmelter and/or system.

o help customers produce the highest-quality goods most economically and eciently,Nordson must continually create and recreateever-improving product oering added-value. A commitment to investment in R&D ishelping in this ongoing endeavor, and is

critical to development o our next generationproducts and systems.

Chris Chastine, senior designer and CADadministrator reports, “A ew years ago,Nordson began investigating 3D productionsystems, commonly called 3D printers, tocreate equipment models and prototypes, ultimately selecting a Fortus 400mc systemater a rigorous analysis o available options.Tis system provided the broadest, mostfexible eatures such as a large-capacity build envelope and thecapability to process a variety o materials including polyphenylsulone

(PPFS), a material with high heat and chemical resistance.”

Chris goes on to say, “Te Fortus products use used depositionmodeling (FDM), a rapid-prototyping technology that producesthree-dimensional (3D) parts layer-by-layer directly from our CADles. ese 3D parts are created to exacting specications and can beused or everything rom testing the aesthetics o a design to t withother parts, or being used in lab-based testing with actual materialprocessing, even under high heat or pressure conditions.”

“raditionally creating and testing parts in challenging shapes was virtually impossible,” explains Justin Clark , project engineer.“est parts had to be either machined, which could sometimes beimpossible, or injection molded (cost prohibitive or one-o tria lpieces) so much experimentation or cutting-edge innovation wasimpractical. Having an in-house 3D printer has made prototypeproduction both time and cost ecient.”

CAD model les, which are created for all our system or productparts, are loaded into the Fortus sotware program, and theappropriate thermoplastic material is selected and loaded. Te printerthen begins building layers as thin as 0.005 inch (0.127 mm) toproduce an accurate model/prototype o the designed part, bothinside and out. Tere is even a smoothing station to remove the smallridges between the layers and to seal the parts i necessary or testing purposes or aesthetics.

As these parts have the real ttings, or example threads or opening

or pins, the individual prototype parts can be put together to ensurproper connections. And then, they can even be tested to make surethe individual pieces and the system as a whole unction as expectedand needed. Additionally, the Fortus 400mc allows us to develop anproduce specialized tools that we can use to streamline and simpliyour manuacturing processes.

Being able to create unctional prototypes reduces developmenttime and saves costs, including tooling. Tis allows Nordson moreopportunity or testing and experimentation o theories and concepso new, innovative Nordson products can continue helping customimprove their product quality and process eciency.
