The statistics contained in these rankings are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc. (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and totalaccuracy. A dagger (†) indicates that a stallion has been pensioned, an asterisk (*) that he has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere, a number sign (#) that he did not stand in California in 2010 but is standing in the state in 2011,a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2011 but will stand in the state in 2012 and in bold that he is a freshman sire. In all cases, a sire will remain in the rankings until the year after his last California foals are two-year-olds. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates only.

California stallion Wild Cat Ridge was represent-ed by his first winner Saturday when Chile de Orowon the seventh race at Pleasanton.

Chile de Oro is a four-year-old colt out of theScore Quick mare Pairodice Queen, was bred byNapoleon Lopez and is owned by trainer GuillermoPreciado.

Chile de Oro is only the only foal to race by theunraced Florida-bred Wild Cat Ridge, a son of TigerRidge. He stands at V and V Thoroughbreds inDixon.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Verizon Wireless have introduced DelMar Mobile. This one-stop mobile app brings customer service to each fan’s fin-gertip. After rescuing 40 abandoned and neglected horses in the last twoyears, Villa Chardonnay Horses With Wings, a non-profit located inTemecula, California, is issuing a call for help.

The rescue ranch takes in homeless equines, candidates for a one-way ticket to slaughterhouses in Mexico or Canada. In most situa-tions, the horses were abandoned by their original owners who couldno longer afford to take care of them due to the economy.

With the recent arrival of three wild mustang orphans, the hoofcount is now up to 160—or 40 horses who need food and veterinarycare, which typically adds up to $8,000 per month.

Villa Chardonnay is run and primarily supported by two localbusinesswomen, Louise Gardner and Monika Kerber, who work full-time to cover the needs of the horses.

“It’s becoming more difficult to find philanthropic fundingbecause of the economy,” said Gardner.

“Recently we’ve had to stop taking in horses, though we get callsevery day from vets, humane societies and other ranches looking forhomes for abandoned equines,” she said.

The last horse rescued by Villa Chardonnay was a three-year-oldemaciated filly found tied to a fence in Perris, California. A home-owner heard about Villa Chardonnay and called them. Gardner andKerber named her Hope, with all the hope in the world that shewould survive and become a resident of Villa Chardonnay.

After working with their vet and a team of helpers for hours,Hope was euthanized 24 hours after she arrived to end her suffering.

“This type of suffering should not be endured by any animal orhuman,” said Gardner.

“She was a victim of the economic times as she was very smalland had never received proper nutrition.”

The organization is seeking donations to help cover the costs ofrising alfalfa prices, medical bills, grain, farrier fees, dental bills andannual vaccinations. There is also need for a farrier (to trim hooves)and to buy wood savings for the stalls. Farrier costs run about $1,050every six to eight weeks.

While most of the horses eat alfalfa, some need more expensivegrain because of their advanced years.

“We have several that don’t have any teeth left,” Gardner said.Alfalfa prices have doubled in the past 12 months, what was

$9.50 a bale is now $19.75 a bale. California rescues are particu-larly hard hit with the increase in feed prices since many WestCoast farmers have changed their crop to corn for the manufactureof ethanol.

Prices are expected to continue to rise through 2012. Alfalfa andgrain cost is about $4,700 a month, an increase of $2,500 per monthmore than a year ago.

In addition to feed prices, Villa Chardonnay had a difficult runwith several horses requiring medical attention this year, includingZiggy who required cancer surgery.

Kerber and Gardner have been rescuing horses for nearly sixyears.

“We are asking all animal lovers to extend a hand, send a taxdeductable donation or sponsor a horse on a monthly basis,” saidGardner.

“We need as much community support as we can muster in addi-tion to our out-of-pocket expenses paid, until we line up grants andother sources of funding. It’s a real shame to see these beautiful hors-es starving to death, abandoned and sent to slaughter because theiroriginal owners have died or can no longer care for them.”

Weekly Update

Hollywood Park increased overnight purses by10 percent for the final three weeks of theSpring/Summer meet.

The hike became effective Thursday, June 30and will continue through Sunday, July 17, closingday of the 54-day season.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club (DMTC)will offer two new wagers at its upcoming sum-mer race meeting, both featuring reducedtakeout percentages as an additional lure tobettors during the 37-day season that kicks offon Wednesday, July 20.

The new Del Mar bets–a Pick Five and ahead-to-head proposition wager – will offer take-outs of 14 percent (in the case of the Pick Five)and 10 percent (for the head-to-head). The lat-ter is one of the lowest takeouts of any racetrack wager in the UnitedStates.

Additionally, the track is planning on presenting a guaranteed car-ryover Pick Six each Sunday with $50,000 in the pool to start theday. In effect, the track will “seed” its pool and ensure a carryover forall Sundays of its seven-week meet.

The Pick Five, which will be called the “50¢ Players Pick 5,” willbe offered under a similar format to the one currently presented byHollywood Park. The wager will be for each card’s first five events andbe available at a minimum 50-cent rate. A bettor will have to selectall five winners in the sequence with all monies in the pool going tothat payoff. Unlike the Hollywood bet, there would be no splitting ofthe pool nor any secondary payoff for those picking four winners.

The head-to-head bet will be conducted on each Saturday’sfeature race. The two horses involved will be selected by the track’sracing office and the match-up will be publicized in advance in thedaily program. The payoff will be based on the pari-mutuel oddsestablished by the betting.

“We’re aware that our players have found the new Pick Five atHollywood Park a winner and that’s why we are bringing what we feelis an even better version of it to Del Mar,” said Joe Harper, DMTC’sChief Executive Officer. “And the new head-to-head bet is some-thing that our surveys have told us ought to be met with enthusiasm. Finally, the seeding of our Sunday Pick Sixes is sure to add someincentive to one of our most popular bets.”

Harper noted further that the track’s new bets were put in place in

concert with the Thoroughbred Owners ofCalifornia (TOC).

“We received a blessing on this from ourhorsemen and, of course, like many of the thingswe now do in our industry, we wouldn’t havebeen able to offer it without their aid and sup-port,” he said. “We are appreciative of that aswell as their ongoing partnership in the businessof racing.”

The $50,000 “seeding” of all Sunday Pick Sixeswill mean there will be at least that amount guaranteed in each PickSix pool to start the day. It effectively guarantees a Pick Six carryover, which would not be subject to takeout, as is the case when a “regu-lar” carryover happens. In the event there is a “regular” carryover intoany of the Sunday cards, the $50,000 addition would not be enacted.

“I think this $50,000 incentive for our Sunday Pick Sixes willbe especially well met by our fans this summer and I’m very excitedabout it,” said DMTC’s Senior Vice President for Marketing,Craig Dado. “It is, for all intents, a bonus win payment to anyonewho hits the Pick Six that day. There is no takeout involved with it.It is like ‘dead’ money. If five people were to hit the bet on a Sunday,it would mean an extra $10,000 in each of their pockets.”

“We commend Del Mar for bringing these new bets on line for thesummer,” said Guy Lamothe, Executive Vice President of the TOC.“We think they’ll be well received by the fans and only make what isalways a terrific meeting at Del Mar even better.”

Besides the new wagering options, the seaside track also will offerits usual array of bets. They are: $2 win, place and show; $1 exacta;$2 quinella; $1 trifecta; $2 rolling double; $1 rolling pick three; $1superfecta (.10¢ minimum); $1 pick four (.50¢ minimum); $1 placepick all, and $1 super high 5.

Racing at Del Mar will be presented on a Wednesday-through-Sunday basis through September 7. First post normally will be at2 p.m. with the exception of Fridays when the races begin at 4 p.m.—From DMTC, DEL MAR, California

Nestled in rollinghills adjacent to thehorse-related commu-nity of Santa Theresita, you will find one of theoldest and most beauti-ful homages to theThoroughbred in thisstate, CaliforniaThoroughbred Ranch.

Now in its fourthdecade of operation, theranch was built from theground up by Jack andSusie Farmer who stillown the beautiful facili-ty and live right on the premises. Once an abandonedalfalfa field, the ranch is a striking portrayal of earlyCalifornia architecture, right down to the adobe and mis-sion-style construction of the barns and office complex.

The main barn contains stalls for 40 horses in train-ing and the foaling barn comes equipped with closed cir-cuit television monitors that are linked up to the farmmanager’s office and residence 24 hours a day. Newbornsare kept in stalls with their dams for the first 36 hours oflife and monitored closely. After that, they are movedoutdoors to grassy paddocks and pastures. The region’stemperate climate allows for horses to live outdoorsyear-round, and the ranch’s pastures range from twoacres to almost 50 and follow the contours of thefoothills.

To date, more than 200 stakes winners have beenfoaled and raised on the ranch’s green fields. Others, likelast year’s Eclipse champion juvenile colt Valid Point, were brought to the ranch as yearlings for breaking andschooling. California Thoroughbred Ranch also has anexcellent reputation as a training center. It offers five

round pens, an indoorriding arena and a sce-nic uphill gallop thatwinds its way throughthe facility. There arealso two treadmillsand a swimming pool, where lay-ups canregain their condi-tioning without risk offurther injury. The ranch is home

to two of California’sfinest stallions. SuperDad is the sire of 22graded stakes winners

and countless other stakes performers. His championdaughter Daddy’s Little Gal captured last year’s Cal CupJuvenile Fillies and this year’s grade I Santa Anita Oaks.Moneymaker was foaled at the ranch and now stands atstud here. This graded stakes winner of nearly $400,000has thrust himself into the national spotlight when his sonHayburner captured this year’s Travers Stakes at Saratoga.Winner of the Wood Memorial and second in both theKentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Hayburner nowhas earnings over $1 million. The Cal-bred is now point-ing for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Farm manager Bob Trainer has more than 30 yearsof experience in this business and gives your horses thepersonal care and attention they deserve. Assistantmanager and yearling trainer Steve Winner also hasmany years of veterinary experience, although the farm’smain vet lives just down the road and is on call 24 hoursa day, especially during the busy foaling season. Visitorsare welcome and encouraged to come and tour the facil-ities. Also visit their impressive website atwww.Califthoroughbredranch.com.
