It is that time of year again, when the Gore District comes together tocelebrate the achievements and contribution of its young and old at the GoreDistrict Community Awards.
Nominations open today for the seventh annual awards, to be held on 1November, and this year there will be 10 categories available.
The Eastern Southland Junior Sportsperson of the Year has been split into ajunior sportswoman and junior sportsman award.
Awards convenor Susan Jones said the junior sportsperson section hastraditionally attracted a large number of entries.
“With so many entries and all of such a high calibre, it was very difficult toselect a winner.
“This move will ensure we can give due credit to our young men and ouryoung women.”
Since its inception in 2007, when the Gore District Council saw theopportunity to coordinate the different awards presented by various groups inthe community, the event has grown in stature and popularity.
Nominations open for the Gore District Community AwardsThe awards night is Gore’s Halberg’s, Oscars and Grammys rolledinto one. It brings together all sectors of the community from the artsto sports, businesses to dedicated volunteers, Mrs Jones said.
The loss of Solid Energy, who has been principal sponsor since theinaugural event, has had an impact but the Council does not want tosee the awards lost to the community, she said.
“We are working on attracting a new major sponsor or sponsorsto replace Solid Energy. Fortunately, we have continued to receivestrong support from all our otherexisting sponsors.”
Nomination forms are available from the Council’s civicadministration building and online at www.goredc.govt.nz.Nominations close on Friday 6 September.
Tickets for the gala dinner should go on sale in early October. Guestspeaker is experienced broadcaster Peter Williams.
Are We Getting Through To You?The Gore District Council is undertaking its first survey specifically targetingcommunications and how it gets its message across.
Keeping people informed about what’s happening and how it impacts on them is animportant function for any local authority. Over the years the Council has developedvarious communication channels and it is now looking to quantify the value of these byfinding out which are achieving its communication aims and which may be falling short.
Chief executive Stephen Parry urges people to fill out the survey, saying it has beendesigned to be user friendly and not an onerous task to complete.
“The main aim is to find out what works best for ratepayers, how relevant the informationis they are getting and what format they want it in.”
The survey is being sent to all ratepayers in their first rates instalment notice for 2013/14,which should be in people’s mailboxes before the end of next week. Alternatively, it isavailable on the Council’s website to download or even easier, it can be completed onlineat tellus.goredc.govt.nz .
Can you understand what we’re talking about?Do you care about what we’re saying? What we want to know is …
Did You Know That …Since 2011, if you are building a dwelling on land outside the Gore District Council’swater reticulation area you are required to provide a dedicated fire fighting water supplyon your land. Dwellings with a domestic sprinkler system need to supply a 7,000 litrefire fighting reserve and dwellings without a sprinkler system need to have at least20,000 litres available. The water storage tank can be above or below ground, needsto be within 90 metres of the dwelling and have couplings to enable easy connectionfor the Fire Service. There also needs to be a hard surface stand area for a fire engine. For further information contact planning officer Rosie Given or refer to the Council’sSubdivision and Development Bylaw section 7 at www.goredc.govt.nz

Pre-election report availableProspective candidates for this year’s local body elections will, for the first time, be able to reada snapshot of the Gore District Council’s financial performance over the last three years andwhat is planned for the future with the release this week of a pre-election report.
Gore District Chief Executive Stephen Parry said this is the first time councils have been requiredto produce such a document, following an amendment in 2010 to the Local Government Act2002.
The objective is for councils to provide consistent information to the public about the issuesfacing them. Pre-election reports have to be prepared and signed off only by the chief executive.
The Council’s 12-page report reflects the financial forecasts in the Long Term Plan and recentlyadopted 2013/14 Annual Plan, including the self-imposed limits on rates increases andborrowings.
Three major projects – an upgrade of the civic administration building, removal of sludge fromthe oxidation ponds, and an upgrade of the arts and heritage precinct – are outlined in thereport. These will cost an estimated $5.2million, should they all proceed.
The pre-election report is available at the Council’s Civic Administration Building, the GoreLibrary, Mataura Service Centre and on the Council’s website www.goredc.govt.nz.
Gore District Council Parks and Reserves gardeners Annette Black (left) and Karen Humeare a familiar sight around the town as they tend the much-admired flower beds and publicgardens. The duo has proved it’s no coincidence they do such a good job by recentlycompleting the National Certificate in Horticulture level three.
