DEFINITIONAny interpersonal communication that is not expressed verbally is called non verbal communication.

Non verbal communication can be classified in thee following ways.

1. Kinesics

2. Proxemics

3. Chronemics

4. Paralinguistics

Kinesics

Body movements or body language are part of Kinesics.

These movements include gestures,postures,facialexpression and eye contact.

Form of Kinesics

KINESICS

GESTURESThey are hand or head movements.

They include-

iii. Affect Displays

iv. Regulators

v. Adaptors

A warm hug Friendliness

Looking at watch Disinterest in the talk

Scratching your head Doubt or thinking something

Frowning with crossed arm Indicates disapproval

Facial ExpressionFace is the mirror of heart.

Our feeling get reflected on our face.

One can send as well as receive feelings through facial expression.

Pulling a face Disappointment

Raising an eyebrow Doubt

Smiling Friendliness

Smiling as a greeting Positive

Eye contactEye contact is important for both sender as well as receiver.

It sends and receives feedback

It expresses emotions and gives instructions.

It is our external image perceived by people.

When we meet people or speak in public, our appearance not only contributes to build our image but also the image of the organization you represent.

ProxemicsThe study of space in communication is called proxemics.

In western society, four categories of proxemics are

Intimate distance for embracing,touching or whispering

Personal distance for interactions among good friends.

Public distance used for public speaking.

ChronemicsThe meaning conveyed by the use of time while communicating is called chronemics.

For example , sometimes we make people wait for us , sometimes we wait for some people.

Chronemics too varies from culture to culture.

Paralinguistics

The study of the role of non- verbal clues is called paralinguistics.

This includes volumes, speed of voice, tone, pronunciation, articulation, pause etc.
