Over the past 17 years, the School of Pharmacy has become a family for me. As a family, we celebrate one another’s

success, rally to recover when we suffer a defeat and comfort each other in the face of senseless loss. The 2012–13

year was fi lled with many familial experiences.

We celebrated the remarkable success of our more than 75 student scholarship recipients and the graduation of the

class of 2013, and we are so proud of our faculty for securing more than $8 million in extramural funding. Two of

our faculty were recognized by the university for their exemplary work in research and teaching: Umesh Desai and

Jürgen Venitz, respectively.

We also came together to mourn the loss of too many of our alumni and friends. In particular, we grieved the loss

of Amy Whitaker Rudenko, graduate of the class of 1998, associate professor and MCV Alumni Association member

and division vice-president. Together we struggled to understand her death and to emulate the characteristics

that we collectively admired in her. She was quick to smile and to help; diligent in her work; passionate about the

profession of pharmacy and her patients; dedicated to her students; a loving friend and a consummate professional.

As our school stands at the crossroads of change with a national search underway for a new dean, and as our

profession stands ready to embrace the opportunities created by the implementation of the Affordable Care Act

and the rapid pace of discovery in the pharmaceutical sciences, I am grateful for the sense of family we have

cultivated here at the School of Pharmacy. Thank you for being a part of our pharmacy family.

DEVELOPMENT

In 2012–13, the School of Pharmacy received 700 gifts and pledges totaling $627,905. The annual fund received 378 gifts, raising $120,210, increasing dollars raised by $18,238 (17.8 percent) and donors by 27 donors (7.6 percent). The Galen Society (individual donors of $500 and above) increased by seven members. The 103 Galen Society members contributed $223,174. The alumni participation rate was 17.9 percent.

sPAcE AND RENOVATIONs

Architectural design began for the renovation of space on the fi fth fl oor of the Smith Building to house the new Center for Compounding Practice and Research. Plans were developed for the MCV Pharmacy Heritage Collection, which will be an enhancement to the common area and meeting rooms on the fi rst fl oor of Smith. A second satellite campus opened, bringing VCU pharmacy students to the University of Virginia Medical Center campus for their third and fourth years, and renovated technology equipment and space elevated the program at the Inova Campus in Fairfax.

OUTREAch AND ADVOcAcy

Many clinical faculty and pharmacy students participated in community outreach programs, such as the Daily Planet, CrossOver Ministry Health Clinic, Fan Free Clinic and Richmond High Blood Pressure Center. A large pharmacy contingent participated in the Remote Area Medical event, which provides care in Southwest Virginia, and the Mission of Mercy projects in Charlottesville and Roanoke, as well as VSU Cares in the Petersburg area. Several faculty worked with Virginia Rep. Randy Forbes’ offi ce to deliver educational programming to older adults in his district. Perhaps most signifi cantly, a new curricular change was implemented that requires all third-year Pharm.D. students to participate in 20 hours of health-related service learning activities in the community.

PhARMAcy’s FUTUREJENNINGs schOLARshIP

In the late summer of 2002, sitting as first-year students in pharmacy school orientation, Kelli Remines and Brandon Jennings had not yet met.

Brandon entered the Pharm.D. program with two years of pre-pharmacy completed at VCU and several years’ experi-ence working as a pharmacy technician at CVS. Kelli entered the program with a B.S. in Chemistry from James Madison University. They shared a passion for health care and a determination to get all they could out of pharmacy school.

As students at the VCU School of Pharmacy, their high level of involvement in student organizations and activities sparked their friendship and later their romance. They married in 2006, the same year they graduated. That same passion and commitment inspired them to endow a scholarship at the VCU School of Pharmacy only six years after their graduation.

With burgeoning careers (Brandon is an assistant professor of pharmacotherapy at the University of Utah, and Kelli is a staff pharmacist at the University of Utah Medical Center) — and a nearly 2-year-old daughter, Abigail — Kelli and Brandon face the same financial challenges as most young families. Yet they felt they could not wait to give back. In 2012, they created the Kelli and Brandon Jennings Pharmacy Scholarship, which will award scholarships to third- or fourth-year students who have demonstrated leadership ability during their time in the School of Pharmacy.

“I received a scholarship when I was a pharmacy student and have served on the scholarship and awards committee here at the University of Utah,” Brandon explained. “I wanted to turn the tables and pay it forward.” Brandon recalls receiving the Warren Weaver scholarship as a third-year student. “After I received the Weaver scholarship and sent my letter of thanks, Dr. Weaver

contacted me and took me out to dinner. He spent time listening to me and offering me advice. It made quite an impression.”

Kelli echoes her husband’s experience. “We got a lot from the school and were involved on many levels. We both received scholarships and wanted to help students, as the cost of education is continuously increasing. We started out with the white coat ceremony. We sponsored a student and really liked the experience. We wanted to do more. After we explored scholarships and found out how easy it is to set up an endowment, we knew what we wanted to do.”

Both Jenningses were affected by the faculty at the School of Pharmacy, as well. Associate Dean Thomas Reinders and Amy Whitaker Rudenko were important influences on them. Brandon met Rudenko when she was still Whitaker, while he was working at CVS and completing his pre-pharmacy education. She would become not only his future teacher, but also a mentor and friend. “Amy modeled giving back to the school and to the profession. She taught by example. She was involved with the Virginia Pharmacists Association, the MCV Alumni Association and the school.” Brandon went on to complete a residency under her direction in the community pharmacy residency program at VCU.

Sadly, she died May 25, 2013. She recently had been promoted to associate professor and remained an inspiration to her students.

“Like Amy,” Brandon said, “we want to give back to the school and the profession that has given so much to us. We felt that our pharmacy education positioned us to succeed, and we wanted to be a part of helping others succeed. It is so easy to give back. Whether through a $50 white coat sponsorship or the creation of an endowment, it makes a tremendous difference to the students.”

The School of Pharmacy lost one of its finest leaders on May 25, 2013. Amy Whitaker Rudenko was only 38 when she lost her life to breast cancer, but she left an indelible mark on VCU pharmacy during her time as student, resident, alumna and faculty.

Rudenko’s cheerful disposition, unwavering commitment to community pharmacy and dedication to people are at the heart of her legacy.

Following graduation from Godwin High School in Richmond, she became a founding member and first president of the pre-pharmacy club at James Madison University. In 1994, she returned to the Richmond area to begin her studies in the School of Pharmacy’s Pharm.D. program.

After completing her Pharm.D., Rudenko entered into the community residency program at VCU before leaving her native Virginia to accept a faculty position at the University of North Carolina. She returned to the VCU School of Pharmacy as an associate professor in 2001.

Rudenko, who received the School of Pharmacy’s Alumnus Service Award in 2008, began working with the MCV Alumni Association soon after graduating. She was a trustee-at-large and past vice president of the alumni association’s Pharmacy Division.

Just this past spring, Rudenko was honored during Reunion Weekend with the 2013 Distinguished Pharmacy Alumnus Award. A long list of accomplishments included her work as a clinical assistant professor at UNC-Chapel Hill; becoming a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist; assisting several Kmart pharmacies in developing patient care activities in the areas of diabetes care, health screenings and

immunization services; and receiving the Virginia Pharmacists Association’s Pharmacists Mutual Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award in 2004.

In nominating her for the Distinguished Pharmacy Alumnus Award, Dean Victor Yanchick called Rudenko a force of positive energy for the profession of pharmacy. He congratulated her for having made an impact on a generation of pharmacists as a teacher, practitioner and leader.

During her tenure at the school, he said, Rudenko had gained a reputation as an expert on medication therapy management in big-box settings. “Her research has impacted the effective use of OTCs in community pharmacy settings and has made significant strides in the documentation of medication therapy management outcomes.”

An endowment fund was been established in honor and memory of Rudenko with gifts received from her family and friends. The school will use the fund to make awards to selected Pharm.D. students who have demonstrated leadership qualities. “It was created to help keep Dr. Rudenko’s name and spirit alive into perpetuity,” said Yanchick.

Amy Whitaker Rudenko is survived by her husband, Mike Rudenko Jr., her children, Olivia Lynn and Abigail Iryna; her parents, Barry and Linda Whitaker of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; her brother Barry K. Whitaker, and his wife Lisa of Chesterfield, Va.; her maternal grandmother, Marjorie Wilson of Roanoke, Va.; her mother-in-law, Irene P. Rudenko; her sister-in-law, Lisa Holly; nieces Jane and Jordan; and nephew Cole.

Umesh Desai of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry

and Jürgen Venitz of the Department of Pharmaceutics were

among eight university faculty honored during VCU’s 31st

Opening Faculty Address and Convocation.

UMEsh DEsAI: DIsTINGUIshED schOLARshIP AwARD

“Dr. Desai is a ‘triple threat’,” says Medicinal Chemistry department chairman Richard A. Glennon. “Excellent in teaching, research and service. … However, research is his strong suit.” The greater university agrees and made its feelings known by awarding Desai the Distinguished Scholarship Award.

Desai is nationally and internationally known for his work in developing a new line of anticoagulant agents expected to alleviate adverse affects seen in current thrombotic therapy used with heart attacks and strokes. He is working to design a synthetic mimetic of heparin, a commonly used, animal-derived anticoagulant agent that can cause adverse affects. His research has been key in launching a new field of medicinal chemistry — nonsaccharide glycosami-noglycan mimetics — which has clinical potential for the treatment of cancer, HSV, HIV and chronic wounds.

In addition to his role as interim director of the university’s Institute for Structural Biology and Drug Discovery, Desai is lead investigator for an NIH program project establishing VCU as a Program of Excellence in Glycosciences along with five other institutions, including Harvard and Johns Hopkins. The seven-year grant will go toward making xenotransplantation, the use of nonhuman organs in humans, a clinical reality.

JüRGEN VENITZ: DIsTINGUIshED TEAchING AwARD

Jürgen Venitz began teaching at age 15, as a tutor, and found his calling. He has been teaching and mentoring ever since with a trail of accolades in his wake. In fact he received the School of Pharmacy’s first Teaching Excellence Award in 1990 — and again in 2011.

Venitz is professor and vice chairman of the School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutics. He has the distinction of being the only pharmacy faculty member with teaching assignments in all three departments: Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science, and in the professional and graduate program. He also has taught classes for VCU Life Sciences and the Department of Nurse Anesthesia.

Despite teaching what he describes as “notoriously disliked” courses — pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics — Venitz is a beloved and respected professor. “Dr. Venitz’s use of technology and mathematical stimulation to demonstrate core principles in the temporal basis of drug action on the human body has enabled him to raise the quality of his teaching and the comprehension of his students to levels that are far superior to most who teach in this area,” wrote Peter Byron, chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics.

Venitz’s skills are sought after nationally and internationally. He has coordi-nated and taught workshops at the NIH and the FDA as well as in Germany and Brazil.

“He displays an uncanny ability to simplify complicated topics,” Byron continued, “resulting in the removal of much of the mystery and rote learning from the applied science known as clinical pharmacology.”

Also receiving university faculty awards were John Clore, School of Medicine, Distinguished Service Award; and Albert Farrell, College of Humanities and Sciences, University Award of Excellence. A new award, the President’s Award of Excellence, was presented to Joseph Marolla, Office of the Vice Provost for Instruction and Student Success; and Presidential Medallions were presented to Nancy Langston, School of Nursing (retired); H.M. Lee, School of Medicine (posthumous); and James Neifeld, School of Medicine.

A PLAcE FOR sTUDENTs

The Barbara and L. Preston Hale student study area will be a unique component of the MCV Pharmacy Heritage Collection. Dean Yanchick envisioned the MCV Pharmacy Heritage Collection as more than a collection of pharmacy artifacts. He aims to create a dynamic learning space for students, faculty and visitors where the lessons from the past could inform the discoveries of tomorrow. Barbara and Preston Hale chose to name the student study area in support of Dean Yanchick’s vision. When asked why he and Barbara made this naming gift, Preston said, “This project is important to the Dean and will be a great enhance-ment to the School. We are delighted to be a part of it.”
