Pentecost Day – June 8th

In the Christian liturgical calendar, Pentecost is observed ten days after Ascension Day and thus fifty days after Easter. It is one of the most important Christian festivals, along with Christmas and Easter. It recalls and celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus.

Pentecost was an important Jewish festival before it became a Christian festival. One of the three pilgrimage festivals that were ideal-ly to be spent in Jerusalem, it occurred fifty days after Passover, the commemoration of Israel’s liberation from Egypt. It recalled and celebrated the giving of the covenant to Israel on Mt. Sinai. It was about the creation of a new kind of community – a way of living together radically different from life in Egypt. This meaning and the period of fifty days were brought forward into the early Christian understanding of Pentecost.

The central affirmation of Pentecost is that the Spirit promised by Jesus is now present among his followers and in the world. The Spirit is the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ. This claim is foundational to the New Testament and early Christianity. (“Speaking Christian,” M. Borg, p. 183f)

OUTREACH

Habitat for Humanity Father’s Day Dedication & Volunteer Opportunity

Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. The Fullers visited Koinonia Farm, a small, interracial, Christian community outside of Americus, Georgia in 1965 and the concept of “partnership housing” grew. The concept centered on those in need of adequate shelter working side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent houses. The houses are built at no profit and

interest is not charged on the loans. Building costs are financed by a revolving fund called “The Fund for Humanity.” The fund's money comes from the new homeowners' house payments, no-interest loans provided by supporters, and money earned by fund-raising activities. The monies in the Fund for Humanity are used to build more houses. Through the work of Habitat, thou-sands of low-income families have found new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups, and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem, decent housing for all. Habitat has helped build or repair more than 800,000 houses and serves more than 4 million people around the world.

Having a great dad or father figure is one of the best gifts you can ever receive. Show him how special he is by making a gift in his honor that will transform lives and communities. Become a Habitat partner by making a $10.00 or more donation and honoring or remembering a special man this Father’s Day. Envelopes are available at the table by the Outreach Bulletin Board along with a dedication card for the recipient. Please be sure to add “Father’s Day” on the memo line of your check and sign the sheet on the table so that your name and dedication will be acknowledged on Father’s Day. Envelopes may be dropped off at the Welcome Center or placed in the collection plate. You can also go to: http://www.habitat.org for more information and to make a monthly or one time donation.

We have reserved June 21st for St. Mark's Lutheran to build with the Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity. Please go to: volun-teerup.com/Login.asp?w=i&o=277 to register and sign up. Click the "Register" button and complete the volunteer profile form. Make sure to link yourself to the "St. Mark" team when you register or the system will not let you sign up for the day. After you are registered click on St. Mark’s and choose the construction volunteer shift. There are only 10 spots available on a first come, first served basis.

Volunteers should arrive at 8:15am for waiver drop off and sign in. We will break for lunch at 12 noon and resume build-ing until 4:00pm. Any weather related closures will be posted on the scheduling site by 7:00am the day of the build. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to work at the site. Everyone is required to complete and turn in a Liability Waiver when they come on site, and minors between the ages of 16 and 18 must have a parent or guardian's signature. Volunteers should plan to bring their own sack lunch and a water bottle. Wear sunscreen, closed toed shoes, and dress weather appropriate as you will be working outdoors. Habitat provides all of the tools, but you are welcome to bring your own if you want (safety glasses and gloves are basic). The build site is located at: 512 S Webster, Aurora IL 60505 - map and directions are on the volunteer website. Please see Pr. Brian if you have any questions or would like to sign up.

Fundraising Recital for Keegan Hawkins

St. Mark’s member, Keegan Hawkins, a student at Rotolo Middle School, has been selected for the 2014 Middle School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. He will perform at Carnegie Hall in June 2014 with the Honors Junior Orchestra as a cellist. Participation in one of the three Honors Ensembles is limited to talented middle school performers across the world.

According to Lisel Bruscia, Program Director, "Being selected to the Honors Performance Series is something each Junior Finalist should be extremely proud of accomplishing. We process thousands of nominations annually, selecting only the most talented performers. Working with these conductors and performing at Carnegie Hall is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that these student musicians never forget." Junior Finalists will come together for five days in June 2014 in New York City to have the opportunity to learn from Kirt Mosier, work with other Junior Finalists and get a taste of New York City. The Saturday, June 28th, performance is open to the public and specially invited guests. Tickets can be purchased through Carnegie Hall box office.

If you are unable to attend the performance at Carnegie Hall, please join us Sunday, June 1st at 4:30 pm at St. Mark's, for a fundraising recital by Keegan. Help us celebrate Keegan and support him in this great honor.

OUTREACH

Is Jesus going with you on vacation?

June, July, and August, typical months for a family vacation. Driving, flying, or maybe train or bus. All types of transportation that could potentially put us in harms way. How about a staycation? Projects to be started and/or projects to finish. Opportunities for families to work and play together.

Whether at far away locations or stay at home vacations, there is opportunity for planning. As you plan for locations, routes, and activities, or plan work and play closer to home, how about including Jesus in your plans? Pray aloud or silently as you start your day, at the table, and as the day’s activities come to an end.

Father, thank you for the power of prayer. Please travel with us, protect us while at work and play, and be our guide to return home safely. In Jesus name we give thanks for the many blessings we may have and in Jesus name, Amen.

Psalms 95: 1-3; Come, let us praise the lord! Let us sing for joy to God who protects us. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and sing joyful songs of praise. For the Lord is a mighty God,

IWU Global Medical Brigades

My niece Meghan, graduated on May 4th from Illinois Wesleyan University, School of Nursing. While at IWU, Meghan was involved with Global Brigades serving as the Student President for the past 2 years. Each year she took Pillowcase dresses to hand out with medicine to as many girls as possible. The girls were filled with joy and immediately put on their dresses!

Thank you to the entire Pillow Case Dress Ministry! Sue Hilderbrand

Global Medical Brigades is a non-profit, student-run, student-led organization that travels to Honduras every year during the first week in June to provide free medical and dental attention to a community of which the chapter brigade is assigned. To conduct a successful brigade, doctors, dentists, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, and undergraduate students volunteer their time and skill sets to provide holistic care to the Honduran community members. Typically, the brigade consists of 40 – 50 participants. Each brigade day, 300 patients are assessed and treated. While prescriptions are being filled, adults and children attend “charlas,” or educational presentations about personal health and hygiene to reduce the furtherance of certain illnesses and diseases. Throughout the academic year, the brigade members organize various fundraisers to raise money to purchase necessary medications and brigade supplies. Of the donations received in the past, the brigade has taken 50 – 100 pillowcase dresses each year, for the last three years, to donate to young girls in Honduran communities and local orphanages supported by Global Brigades efforts. This year the brigade is set to take place June 1 – 7 with 47 brigaders prepared to provide free medical and dental attention. If you are interested in supporting the efforts of the IWU Global Brigade, or if you are a healthcare provider that is interested in joining the brigade for future years, please contact the IWU Global Brigade at [email protected].

Men’s Health Month

Silent Health Crisis: “There is a silent health crisis in America...it’s a fact that, on average, American men live sicker and die younger than American women.” Dr. David Gremillion, Men’s Health Network

Part of the reason for this health gap is that men don’t take care of themselves as well as women do. Men are more likely to engage in unhealthy behavior, and less likely than women to adopt preventive health measures. Men are less likely to have health insurance, more likely to work in dangerous occupations, and often put off going to the doctor even when they really should go. As a result, men die younger and in greater numbers of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and many other diseases.

Prevention: More than half of these premature deaths are preventable. Below is a summary of important steps men can take to improve the quality and length of their lives:

Eat a varied diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains,

and low-fat foods. Be especially careful to limit cholesterol

intake and avoid saturated fats.

Moderate exercise for 30 minutes five times a week, or

vigorous exercise for 20 minutes three times a week.

Protect yourself from the sun.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day.

Limit alcohol to two drinks per day.

Recognizing Symptoms: When a warning light flashes on the car dashboard, most men usually take the car to the shop. But when warning lights flash on their body, most men don’t (or won’t) notice. Here are a few flashing lights you should look out for:

Changes in bowel or bladder habits. This can be an indication of prostate or bladder problems, and blood in the urine is a

common indicator of kidney problems. Do you get up five times a night to go to the bathroom? That could be a symptom of an

enlarged prostate, a common condition among men as they get older.

Impotence or erectile dysfunction. Most of the time, erectile problems are caused by an underlying health problem, such as

diabetes, clogged arteries, or high blood pressure.

Persistent backaches, changes in the color of urine or stool, obvious changes in warts or moles, unusual lumps,

recurrent chest pains or headaches, bleeding that won’t stop, nagging cough, unexplained weight loss, and extreme

fatigue can all be symptoms of other serious health problems.

Depression. Although women may be more likely to attempt suicide, men are four times more likely to succeed. Because men

are reluctant to ask for help and may try to hide their depression, loved ones or friends may recognize the symptoms sooner

than they do. These may include acting overly anxious, having trouble sleeping, complaining of feeling sad, “empty” or help-

less, engaging in unusually risky or reckless behavior, or losing interest in hobbies or other pleasurable activities.

For more information and resources on men’s health speak with your health care provider and visit

www.menshealthnetwork.org

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.”

Proverbs 1:5

Don’t smoke, and minimize your exposure to second-hand

smoke.

Know your family history and discuss it with your doctor.

If you are over 40, get a baseline PSA (prostate specific anti-

gen) test and monitor this periodically with your doctor.

Practice safe sex.

Wear a seatbelt whenever you’re in the car, and a helmet

when on a motorcycle or bicycle.

EQUAL EXCHANGE

History of Coffee in Peru

This month we conclude our series on coffees offered by the Coffee Project at St. Mark’s in association with Equal Exchange, a fair trade roaster who procures their beans from farmer cooperatives in coffee growing regions of the world. Our focus this month is on Organic French Roast Coffee which we will be selling for fifty cents off the regular price during June. Coffee beans from Peru are one of the components in this rich blended coffee.

Peru is located in Western South America, bordering the South Pacific Ocean, between Chile and Ecuador with a total area of 496,000 sq mi, about three times the size of California and about the same shape. Peru's climate is highly diverse, ranging from tropical in the east to dry desert in the west and from temperate to frigid in the Andes Mountains. The different climates closely match Peru's primary geographic regions including a western coastal plain, the high and rugged Andes in the center, and the eastern lowland jungle of the Amazon Basin.

Coffee production came to Peru in the 1700s. After two centuries, the heirloom typica variety still comprises 60 percent of the country's exports. There are more than 110,000 coffee growers in Peru, most of whom are indigenous to these landscapes and speak Spanish as a second language after their indigenous tongue. The average land-holding farmer lives on two or three hectares, hours away from the comforts of electricity and running water. Peru’s coffee exports account for two percent of both the national economy and the global coffee supply. Peru is quickly building a global reputation for producing traditionally cultivated, shade grown, high quality Arabica beans.

Peruvian coffee farmers' landholdings are small, and the country's typical micro-wet-milling operation is even smaller. From May to September, farmers pick ripe cherries and carry them to hand pulpers and wooden fermentation tanks. This tradition of micro-wet-milling has protected Peru's water resources from the devastating effects of river-polluting pulping factories. After processing their coffee, most farmers hike their beans by foot or mule into the nearest town—a trip that can take anywhere from thirty minutes to eight hours. On Saturdays, the plaza of the closest town becomes a buying and selling station for the surrounding remote coffee growers. Farmers sell their coffee and buy goods for their homes before heading back up the mountainous foot trails. An unfortunate--but all too common--experience at these buying and selling plazas is the arrival of only one buyer. This dramatically decreases the price paid to farmers for their coffee. With no personal warehouse space and only unreliable, expensive collective storage in town, farmers generally have no option but to accept lower prices.

During the last decade, Peru’s smallholder cooperatives consolidated their movements and provided a more organized and rewarding opportunity for tens of thousands of smallholders who were once subjected to the exploitive trading practices explained above. An estimated 15-25 percent of Peru's smallholders now belong to cooperative organizations. These cooperatives have linked with international Fair Trade and organic networks to stimulate their growth. Working together with partners like Equal Exchange, Peruvian smallholder cooperatives quickly became the second largest suppliers of Fair Trade certified coffee after Mexico and one of the world's top organic producers. The higher prices offered through these certified and specialty markets have strengthened cooperatives and offered at least some price premiums to farmers. The more direct market access has also helped four Fair Trade Certified co-ops establish themselves among Peru's largest 21 coffee exporters. Cooperatives have invested these price premiums and many donations from international development agencies into building infrastructure for improving coffee quality, processing and exporting, training farmers in their transition to certified organic production and social development projects. The significant differences that farmers experience go well beyond better prices received at the farm. The differences are about being organized and developing a collective sense of identity through participation in their cooperatives, about the ability to own and control their means of production, and about the shared learning process through trainings and farmer exchanges. One farmer shares her reflections, “Before there were no trainings. But now they tell us about the roles of men and women. You learn to value yourself. You learn about participation.”

THANK YOU Thank You Dennis and I both want to sincerely thank the pastors and members of St. Mark’s for the hospital visits, many cards and get-well wishes, and dinners we received in our recent time of need. We were so coordinated that we each had procedures done at the same time but not at the same hospital! Looking back, it seems we drove our families crazy. Anyway, we are now on the mend and want to acknowledge our gratefulness. ~Pam & Denny Beallis

Outreach Thank You

The Outreach Team would like to thank the dedicated people who feed the hungry at PADS.

Thank You We would like to thank Pastor Pat, Kristin Young, and any other members or staff at St. Mark’s who assisted with the funeral service for Marcel "Pete" Joy on May 1, 2014. It was exactly the funeral service we wanted for him, respectful and dignified. The Funeral Lunch Team did a great job serving the luncheon afterwards. Thank you to anyone who provided the many delicious desserts. With much appreciation, Tim & Janet Joy and Family
