In 1942, all diamond dealers on the Diamond Bourses in Belgium and the Netherlands were obliged to hand in their stocks. Millions of polished and rough diamonds were ‘kept in storage’ in Brussels and Arnhem respectively. In reality, the Nazis sold the stocks on the world market. After the war, however, there proved to be a huge discrepancy between the amount of diamonds being sold and the amount of dia-monds returned.

The biggest diamond dealer turns out to have been SS officer Friedrich Kadgien. As a confidant of Herman Göring, he was responsible for the forced labour and foreign exchange sales that were so essential for the German war industry.

The authors dig deep into the archives and show us how Kadgien transferred millions via a Swiss front man to South America, where the Nazis reappeared in the fifties, in Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.

Bram de Graaf (1966) is a journalist

years as an editor at several major

Dutch magazines. Ambo | Anthos has

previously published his acclaimed

‘The Betrayal of Benschop demonstrates that new, previously untold war stories that retain a kind of universal relevance are always emerging.’ – AD VAN LIEMPT, AUTHOR OF HITLER’S BOUNTY HUNTERS

It is 1941. Holland is occupied. An eighteen-year-old Dutch student cycles towards France, to freedom. Nineteen months later, he arrives in England, where he is trained as a secret agent and meets the love of his life. He returns to the Netherlands as a liaison between London and the resistance. In February 1944 he is captured by the Germans. They drag him from camp to camp, until he finally escapes.

‘England sailer’ Bram Grisnigt (born 1923) survives a torpedo, theGestapo, concentration camps and a death march, while he sees hisfriends die around him. After the war he leaves it all in the past, and never speaks about it again for the sake of self-preservation. Only the love of his life, Ann, knows everything.

Seventy years later, the former secret agent finally decides to tell his story to Bram de Graaf, especially for today’s youth. So they will not forget. Have his struggle and the suffering he and his friends endured been worth it? Are we worth it?

Jacques Meerman (1943) has trans-

lated many cookbooks from various

languages, amongst others from Clau-

dia Roden, Harold McGee and Giorgio

Locatelli. Until recently he was a culi-

nary writer. He lived in Spain for de-

cades, during which time he became

fascinated by Dutch cuisine, which

turns out to be very exotic when viewed

from the outside.

P R E S S O N A B R I E F H I S T O RY O F D U T C H C U I S I N E :

‘For now it is the bible, the definitive work that all culinary enthusiasts should have in their cupboard.’ – VOLKSKRANT

‘Meerman’s beautifully illustrated book also offers more than one hun-dred historical recipes for those who want to get cooking themselves. A must for anyone who loves history as well as food and cooking!’ – FRIESCH DAGBLAD

‘Monumental book with plenty of illustrations’ – BOUILLON!

Many people consider Dutch cuisine to be rather basic: pancakes, buckwheat porridge, stew – that’s about it. Nor are our eating habits much of an example to the rest of the world. Nevertheless, Dutch cuisine consists of much more than just potatoes, vegetables and meat. A Brief History of Dutch Cuisine shows how our culinary tradi-tion has developed over the centuries. The Roman occupation left its mark and the Arabs gave us spinach, cauliflower, spices, sugar and citrus fruit. Thanks to the discovery of America in 1492 we eat green beans, tomatoes, potatoes and quinoa.

These developments led to a rich Dutch gastronomic tradition and have shaped how we cook and eat today. This richly illustrated book not only gives a clear insight into Dutch cuisine, it also contains more than a hundred historical recipes.

co-editor of a Dutch literary journal and

writes for major Dutch and Belgian

newspapers.

P R E S S O N P R E V I O U S W O R K :

‘Incredibly diligent, knowledgeable and moreover well-written book about the European writers in and before the war. An essential read.’ – DIE ZEIT

‘Brilliant language play.’ – VRIJ NEDERLAND

‘Buelens has written a brilliant and accessible book about the hyperbole of the Great War.’ – DE VOLKSKRANT

The canon of sixties culture is subject to little discussion: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jean-Luc Godard, Andy Warhol and the miniskirt will all appear on most lists, perhaps supplemented with James Bond, Star Trek or John Coltrane. The focus on these landmarks, however, has produced a one-sided image of the decade. Other phenomena from mainstream culture such as West Side Story, Cleopatra, The Sound of Music, Un homme et une femme, Brigitte Bardot, West and East German westerns and the twist and bossa nova rages are just as important for a proper understanding of the period.

Instead of focusing on one country, year, theme or movement, Buelens regards the sixties as a global phenomenon. The book is set up alter-nately thematically and chronologically, and it accounts of the ways in which great geopolitical and cultural developments interlock and the origins of culture and value patterns which remain sources of inspira-tion and controversy today.

Focusing not only on the well-known political episodes and artistic and cultural highlights in music, movies, architecture photography and lit-erature, Buelens broadens our view as he includes almost forgotten works of art, icons and movements.

Via Roma

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST DUTCH BOOK DESIGNS OF 2015

Why is the broad avenue leading to St. Peter’s known as the Road of the Conciliation? What is the link between the Via dei Fori Imperiali, along which lie the ancient imperial forums, and Mussolini? And how can you tell from the name Piazza Navona what lies beneath the square?

In her brilliant guidebook Via Roma, Willemijn van Dijk lets you wander through the streets of the Italian capital. Behind the street names of Rome hides the ancient history of the city by the Tiber. The street signs take you on a trip through history and past Rome’s world heritage, from Romulus to Mussolini and from the Colosseum to the ultramodern Museo dell’Ara Pacis. Via Roma is an indispens-able book for every Italophile.

A scintillating and playful guide that takes you on a stroll through the history of Rome

P R E S S O N V I A R O M A :

‘An ideal book to accompany you on contemplative strolls through the history-steeped Italian capital.’ – AD MAGAZINE

‘A common drawback (of other books) is that you soon get to the point where you can’t see the wood from the trees. The solution is to start with the streets as they are today. This book on the eternal city is therefore an essential accompaniment for travellers to Rome.’ – ITALIË UITGELICHT

The Greatest Show on Earth

P R E S S O N T H E G R E AT E S T S H O W O N E A R T H :

‘Haegens makes a strong point: the contrast between market and govern-ment is fiction, a false contrast. It provides a nice framework for politi-cians. They can distinguish themselves: those on the right in favour of the market, and those on the left in favour of the government. Haegens’ book helps us to filter out the numerous political fallacies in these discussions.’ – POLITALK.NL

‘In his book Haegens looks at the economy as it is. And not, as many econ-omists do, as it should be.’ – BLIK OP DE WERELD

‘Under a thin layer of capitalism,’ writes Haegens, ‘hides a more social, human economy.’ Maybe it will get more attention once we are looking through the Martian’s telescope. Or if we read Haegens’ book, of course.’ – DE CORRESPONDENT

‘Koen Haegens introduces ‘the true face of capitalism”’ – **** NRC HANDELSBLAD

The Greatest Show on Earth by Koen Haegens is a dizzying journey through the world of finance and today’s seemingly mundane markets, where nothing is what it seems. At the end awaits a glimpse of the real economy, of the true story behind the greatest show on earth.

The market is everywhere. From the supermarket to the labour market, the housing market to the dating market: even love is increasingly be-ing discussed in terms of supply and demand. We live in a market economy. Even democracy now seems to bow to the demands of the financial markets.

But what if all this is not true? What if this ubiquitous and mysterious market economy looks very different than we think - or even does not exist? These questions have preoccupied economics editor Koen Hae-gens since the outbreak of the economic crisis, the moment when the general public got a very brief glimpse of the reality behind the beauti-ful backdrop of the modern economy.

Koen Haegens (1980) is econo mics

editor at De Groene Amsterdammer.

In 2012 he published his debut Take

Your Time: Surviving in the To-Go

Society, an acclaimed reflection on

the roots of our haste and lack of time.

Forty Days

FOR READERS OF MITCH ALBOM

Shortly after the death of her father, Samira Dainan travels to Jerusalem. In a city that is sacred to three major world religions, she seeks comfort for her immense grief. All religions have rituals that are intended to make death bearable: Berbers and Arabs mourn their dead for forty days, Sephardic Jews for thirty. But do such customs offer genuine relief?

With her notebook in hand, Samira walks past the churches, mosques and synagogues of Jerusalem in search of comfort. In an exceptionally clear style she gives an account of her grieving process. At the same time her book is a beautiful tribute to a headstrong father, an artist who left Morocco in search of greater freedom.

P R E S S O N F O R T Y D AY S :

‘Samira writes in crystal-clear prose about how she deals with the death of her extraordinary father. It is never sentimental, and as a result it really hits home. Moving, vulnerable and intense!’ – ABDELKADER BENALI

‘[…] beautifully constructed and extremely well documented.’ – NRC HANDELSBLAD

Samira Dainan is a writer and singer.

She has worked with groups such as the

Amsterdam Klezmer Band and appeared

at festivals including Lowlands and Read

Spinoza, Philosopher of Freedom

P R E S S O N P R E V I O U S W O R K :

‘An inspiring and rich overview of very diverse and often conflicting virtues.’ – DE MORGEN

‘Maarten van Buuren is endowed with a robust, supple and almost sexy style of writing.’ – JOOST ZWAGERMAN IN NRC HANDELSBLAD

Maarten van Buuren is emeritus

professor of French literature at the

University of Utrecht. His bestseller

Frog Goes Cycling!, an account of his

struggle with depression, was published

in 2008. Together with Joep Dohmen

he wrote The Price of Freedom and

Of Old and New Virtues.

Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) is widely regarded as the most re-nowned and influential philosopher the Netherlands has ever known. In his most famous work, the Ethics, Spinoza examines how man can achieve freedom, a revolutionary message for that time.

Spinoza is as complicated as he is famous. His Ethics is consid-ered unreadable. In Spinoza, Philosopher of Freedom, Maarten van Buuren sheds an explanatory light on Spinoza’s complex phi-losophy. He shows the five pillars on which Spinoza’s thought is based: the pursuit of self-determination, the development of power, following intuition, collaboration with others, and above all the pursuit of freedom. In this appeal lies his enduring topical-ity. In an accessible manner, Van Buuren places Spinoza among philosophers who had great influence on his thinking, such as Descartes, Hobbes and Hugo Grotius. He demonstrates the core of Spinoza’s ethics: liberation from paternalism and the quest to live in harmony with the world and with oneself. Only then can man be happy.

Food for Thought

Rik Peters (1987) is a journalist and

editor. He writes about science and

philosophy, and his work has appeared

in publications such as NRC Handels-

blad, KIJK and Nieuwe Revu. He has

also eaten on average three meals a

day for the past 28 years. With a relaxed

tone, a healthy dollop of humour, and a

keen eye for unexpected connections,

he guides his readers not only through

more than two thousand years of phi-

losophy but also through the menu.

P R E S S O N F O O D F O R T H O U G H T:

‘In the hands of journalist Rik Peters, great philosophers of the past tumble cheerfully over one another and shed light on topical issues concerning our food. Peters lends a helping hand by making surprising connections.’ – LEKKER VEGETARISCH

‘The wide variety of culinary subjects and the equally wide variety of philosophical perspectives, as well as the smooth and youthful style of writing, make this book an enjoyable prosaic gem.’ – HVV

‘Compulsory reading for owners of cookery shops and schools. A well-documented and pleasantly written little book, full of funny quotes and successful puns.’ – TREND

Philosophers have an aversion to food. After all, no other topic has been paid so little attention to as eating. Ever since philosophers invented the concept of body and mind, reflecting upon chewing and swallowing, digesting and crapping has been considered just a little less noble than pondering on free will or demonstrating the categorical imperative.

And we suffer for it today. Large numbers of people are trying to feel their way through the food landscape, but without a philosophical map we must all find our own route... and we are pretty lost. How else do you explain the increasing number of both vegetarians and broiler chickens, the fact that hipsters drool over divine goji berries while hip-pies fight for crooked cucumbers, and that bestseller lists are full of hearty cookbooks alongside austere diet plans?

But there is hope. It so happens that many scholars did write something about food: often just a subordinate clause or a footnote, but better than nothing. Food for Thought examines what great thinkers thought about food and what their ideas mean to us. Did you know that Thomas More invented factory farming? That Socrates had a clever plan to tackle the obesity epidemic? Or that John Locke devised Monsanto’s policy? Food for Thought is the tasty first step towards a real food philosophy.

Roaring NinetiesJA N N A H L O O N T J E N S

Roaring Nineties describes our most recent fin de siècle and compares it with the present day. It was a time when it was believed the great wars were over. It was before 9/11, before the advent of mobile tele-phony and the Internet, a time of multicultural ideals, prosperity and optimism.

In the Roaring Nineties, Jannah Loontjens examines the image we have of that decade and the years leading up to it. She describes her experiences in the squat in The Hague where she lived with her mother. She talks about her philosophy studies in New York, where she was taught by the philosopher Derrida, about her job as a gogo dancer in nightclubs, and the post-structuralist thought that was fashionable at the time. She also looks back on her childhood in Sweden where, under a starry sky in a dark forest, the first big meta-physical questions crossed her mind. With reference to the work of Derrida, Baudrillard, Butler and Heidegger, Loontjens shows how her own life is connected with philosophy, and how major philosophical questions can go hand in hand with practical matters.

P R E S S O N P R E V I O U S W O R K :

‘What makes this novel so new, exciting and rich is the sophisticated way in which she inserts psychological, philosophical and social layers throughout the story.’ – TROUW

‘Vivacious and modern.’ – JAN MAGAZINE

‘Painfully recognizable.’ – VERONICA MAGAZINE

‘With this thought-provoking novel, Loontjens demonstrates the power of literature.’ – HP DE TIJD

Jannah Loontjens (1974) is a philoso-

Cancer and Cannabis begins with Monique Posthumus’ discovery of a large lump in her groin. The lump is found to be a metastasis of an aggressive and advanced form of colon cancer. Just weeks after finding the lump she was told that the cancer was terminal and that she did not have long to live.

However, soon after the diagnosis, she discovered cannabis. Thanks to cannabis oil and her state of mind, the course of Posthumus’ illness took a miraculous turn.

Cancer and Cannabis has been written for cancer patients, for rela-tives of cancer patients, for workaholics, and for doctors. Monique Posthumus’ very personal and poignant story is supplemented by short pieces of relevant information on subjects including cannabis, chemotherapy, cancer, and the pharmaceutical industry. The recur-ring theme of this book is the cannabis plant, which has been so beneficial to her and for which she has gained a deep respect. Cannabis does not deserve to be ignored.

Monique Posthumus is a mother of

two children and has a busy job as a

project manager, when she is diag-

nosed with an incurable form of cancer.

This diagnosis turns her life upside

down. In Cancer & Cannabis Monique

describes her experiences in her search

oil, that has given her a greater quality

of life. She gives presentations about

Life lessons from the ‘founding mother’ of Happinez: choose your course and start anew!

I N E Z VA N O O R D

If Your Life Is a Circle, Where Do You Stand?

BEST DUTCH SPIRITUAL BOOK OF THE YEAR 2016

AUTHOR FEATURED IN THE INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED

MOVIE THE POWER OF THE HEART

Magazine maker Inez van Oord is known as the creator of the maga-zines Seasons and Happinez. And she was successful: they continue to be big brands. In this full-colour illustrated book, Inez writes about her own life lessons, which she describes as a journey through the life cy-cle. Her story is about ideas and how they are born, about setting up the magazines, and about success and loss. But above all, Inez shows that it is never too late to start over.

This book is an appeal to bring words such as inspiration, imagination and connection back into our lives. It revolves around the simple ques-tion: why do I do what I do? In our personal lives or our work is it all about ego or money, or is there still room and time for ideals, for oth-ers, for making connections? How do you show your values in your actions? Or have we forgotten them?

‘If you look at your life circle in this way, this circle becomes an internal guide, a compass. Not to send you to the north or south, but to the centre, to the essence, the most valuable place where everything comes together. The most beautiful place to be,’ says Inez van Oord.

In Addicted to Love, Jan Geurtz clearly demonstrates that our search for love and recognition stems from a fundamental self-rejection. We try to compensate for this with our quest for appreciation from others. But this is counterproductive: it actually makes us more inse-cure and therefore increasingly dependent. This creates an addiction to love, recognition and the security of a relationship. As a result, most romantic relationships eventually hit the buffers, or – perhaps even worse – are reduced to listless companionship with little room for growth and happiness.

With humour and practical examples, Jan Geurtz shows a way out of this vicious circle. Once rid of self-rejection, our painful emotions, but also our sexual desires, turn out to be the gateway to a state of being that is completely free of entrapment and dependence, and is filled with love and clarity – with or without a relationship.

In Freed by Love, Jan Geurtz describes in an accessible manner the most common relationship problems and how you can exploit them for spiritual growth. He helps you to work towards a spiritual love affair between two independent people, in which love increasingly blossoms and contributes to the happiness and fulfilment of both partners.

Scientists from Wagenin-gen have proclaimed seaweed and algae the new super foods, packed with high-quality proteins, vitamins and minerals. By choosing seaweed as the main source of protein we can restore and repair the ecosystem, save thou-sands of litres of fresh water, and free up millions of acres of land. It’s like saving the world with good food!
