In 1858 when prospectors arrived in present-day Colorado it was the Ute Indians who greeted them. These proud and independent Native Americans had inhabited this part of the Rocky Mountains for centuries. This book was painstakingly researched by Rockwell and has become a primary resource for scholars. Rockwell conducted many interviews and extensively recorded the history of the early Native Americans who once inhabited our region.
Empire of the Summer Moon is a stunningly vivid historical account of the forty-year battle (1836-1875) between Comanche Indians and white settlers for control of the American West, centering on Quanah, the greatest Comanche chief of them all. This is a very readable historical account of the American Indians and the Western United States.

A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains
is one of the many accounts of Isabella L.
Bird’s amazing travels and adventures.
At the age of 22 in 1854 Isabella left a
comfortable life in England for a life of
adventurous travel. This book is an
account of six months of those travels in
1873 through the rugged terrain of the
Colorado Rockies. Based upon her
letters to her sister this account relates
the many hardships of the great western
frontier in the pioneer days as well as the
awesome beauty of nature she found in
the western territories.
The original fort near La Junta,
CO, was built by William and
Charles Bent in 1833 to trade with
plains Indians and trappers.
Primary trade was with the
Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho
Indians for buffalo robes. For
much of its 16-year history the fort
provided explorers, adventurers,
and the US Army a place to get
needed supplies, wagon repairs,
livestock, good food, water and
company, rest and protection in
this vast “Great American
Desert.”

The dust storms that terrorized America’s
High Plains in the darkest days of the
Depression were like nothing ever seen
before.
This is the story of those who stayed and survived …. It is an extraordinary story
of endurance and heroism … a powerful cautionary tale
about the dangers of trifling with nature.
