Fellow Nomads
And so begins 2018, it really is incredible how quickly the time has flown. I would like to extend my best wishes to all the Nomads and their families, I truly hope that 2018 is an exceptional year for you all. From a club perspective, we started our year with a morning game at Walmer Country Club which was followed by a braai after prizegiving. It was fantastic to see our biggest group of full playing Nomads in the field, hopefully this trend will continue throughout the year. The weather unfortunately was not our friend on the day and we had to contend with gale force winds, despite this some players had some great rounds, sadly I was not one of them! I would like to thank Mike Viviers and his team for all their efforts on the day, as always you went out of your way to welcome the Nomads to your course and as always it is greatly appreciated! Walmer Country Club as with all the courses in the Eastern Cape is having some struggles due to the drought, however I think the course was in very good condition considering this. The greens and tee boxes were excellent which is a testament to the greenkeeper and his staff. All in all I thought the day was a success and there was great camaraderie throughout the day.
We decided to play our Gary Player Knockout at the game, so Neale Kunhardt and myself teamed up against Pat Phillips and Muis van der Westhuisen. I wish I could say that the game was close and that we gave Pat and Muis a run for their money, this however was not even close to what actually transpired! While my father and I looked like we had picked up golf clubs for the first time, Pat and Muis played some exceptionally consistent golf which didn't allow us into the game at any stage. Well done gents and I wish you well in the main competition! The day went off relatively well, we did have a few technical difficulties which delayed prize giving, so in that regard I would like to apologize to the members, this I think was made up for at the braai afterwards which added to the day and was attended by a number of the players and their partners. In this regard I must say a very big thank you to our JVC, John Nell, for all his efforts in organising the braai, it really is a thankless task which is thoroughly enjoyed by all. As mentioned earlier, prize giving was slightly longer than usual which can be attributed to the technical issues and maybe some rust on our part.

Having said this I was fortunate enough to firstly induct Brian Barendse into Nomads, he will be a very good addition to our ranks and addition to inducting Brian I was able to welcome back Riaan Mulder and Fanie van Niekerk back to Nomads, for me it is always very nice to see former Nomads returning. I hope you all have many years of enjoyment with the Eastern Cape Nomads.
The Andrew Mentis Golf Day will be held on 2 February which is just around the corner, for those of you who have not entered please do so as soon as possible by contacting Cobus van Biljon. This has always been a highlight of the year and I have no doubt this year will be no exception. Cobus has chosen a very worthy cause this year in NSRI and they will obviously directly benefit from your participation in the event as either a player or a sponsor.
As I mentioned it is incredible how the year has whizzed by and it seems like yesterday that we were preparing to go to Nelspruit and now the Eastern Cape team is preparing to head to Cape Town for what promises to be a fantastic Nationals. We currently have a team of 21 as we have recently been allocated another spot which based on the criteria has been given to Stuart McCleod. I would like to wish the team all the best for the tournament!
Our next game will be held at Wedgewood Golf Club on 11 February, which will also be a morning game.
Until Wedgewood …….

Good day Fellow Nomads,
Sunday at Walmer where it was very windy, the golf was well attended, and all went off well. Glad to have Stella Artois back as our after-match beer.
Thanks to all that assisted in setting up the alter, and all the guilty parties for the packing up. See many hands make light work of packing up the alter.
Our next game being a Sunday early morning game the 11th February 2018.
Yours in Nomads,
John Nell
