1 Changes between CXM4.0 and CXM4.1
This document provides information on the Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station(BTS) alarms. The alarms are used for internal fault recovery and fault reportingto the BSC, NMS/NetAct and/or Nokia BTS Manager.
Also, the document gives instructions for the operator how to correct the faults inorder to maintain traffic in the air interface and/or to protect the units in the basestation.
Note
This document does not include transmission unit alarms. Please refer to theappropriate transmission documentation.
Changes between CXM4.0 and CXM4.1 Alarm Descriptions documents
In BTS SW Release CXM4.1, the Alarm Descriptions document has beenmodified. The following modifications have been made:

2.1 Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station alarmexamples
Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station alarms issued at the BSC or NMS/NetActhave a four-digit alarm number and an alarm name, and an optional fault reason(see the figures below). For other fields in the below figures, please refer to BSCdocumentation.

The text under the alarm name gives the fault reason that has caused the alarm,for example see 2. in the figure above: Power unit is probably broken.

Note
One alarm can have many different fault reasons:
In the above figure, the fault reason in 2. is different although the alarm number isthe same as in the figure below. Different faults may have the same effect on theoperation of a base station object, therefore they have the same alarm number andname. The fault reason specifies the fault and helps in troubleshooting.

2.2 Identifying faulty units
Faulty units can be identified on the Nokia BTS Manager desktop. The BTSManager shows an Alarms window with an Object column giving the object (forexample BCF), that the alarm refers to, and also specifying the unit, rack, shelfand slot. The Severity column in the Alarms window indicates the level of thealarm (for example critical, minor). The Equipment view in the Supervisionwindow shows the location of the units in the cabinet.
Unit location numbers are used in alarm information to locate a failed unit.Themain principle for numbering locations is from top to bottom and from the left tothe right. Location numbers are defined with the following parameters:
RACK specifies the rack of the cabinet
SHELF specifies the shelf in the cabinet
SLOT specifies the location on the shelf

2.3 Troubleshooting
Purpose
The fault reason can be used for troubleshooting as follows:
Steps
1. Check the alarm number and alarm name and refer to the Alarms listto find the correct alarm description table.
2. Find the fault reason in the Fault reason field in the alarm descriptiontable.

3. Follow the instructions in the proposed order given in the Instructionfield.
See also alarm cancelling information in the Cancelling field.
4. If the fault reason cannot be found in the Fault reason field, follow theinstructions given for Other faults.
5. If there is no fault reason text with the alarm (see 1. in Figure'Examples of active alarms as seen at the BSC'), refer to the correctalarm description table and follow the possible instructions given inthe Instruction field.
2.4 Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station alarmreclassification
In fault situations, Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station runs an automaticreclassification procedure for major (**) and critical (***) alarms before it sendsan alarm to the BSC. When an object becomes faulty, only one critical (***)alarm from the object can be active at a time.
In reclassification the alarm handling detects which logical base station object isaffected by a unit level fault. After reclassification, an object level alarm is issuedaccording to a certain hierarchy, as described in the figure below.
Alarm Output in the figure below shows the number and the name of the alarm(s)issued at the BSC in such a fault situation. Also, the object that is the alarm originis given in brackets.

Fault situation 3:
1. TRX 1 becomes faulty and ceases to operate. 7606 TRX FAULTYalarm isissued.
2. TRX 2 becomes faulty, which causes BTS 1 cease to operate. Alarmreclassification discards the new TRX alarm and a BTS alarm, 7603 BTSFAULTY, is issued.
3. TRX 3 becomes faulty, and another 7606 TRX FAULTY alarm is issued.
4. TRX 4 becomes faulty, which causes BTS 2 cease to operate. Now bothsectors in the BCF are not operating. Alarm reclassification discards boththe new TRX alarm and the new BTS alarm, and a BCF alarm, 7600 BCFFAULTY, is issued.
Fault situation 4:
1. TRX 1 becomes partially faulty but calls are getting through. 7607 TRXOPERATION DEGRADED alarm is issued.
2. TRX 2 becomes faulty and ceases to operate. Alarm reclassificationdiscards the new TRX alarm and a BTS alarm, 7604 BTS OPERATIONDEGRADED, is issued.

1. If the alarm is seen at the BSC, the transmissionunit is not working properly. However, if the basestation otherwise operates properly, there is noneed for immediate repair. The transmissionalarms are not reported to the BSC.
2. If the alarm is seen on Nokia BTS Manager only,the transmission unit is not operating. Reset theBCF.
3. If the alarm reappears after BCF reset, switch thecabinet power off and on.
4. If the alarm reappears after the recovery actionsabove, replace the faulty transmission plug-inunit.

Note
In case of alarm 7620, if the power loss is very short and the power is on againwithin 1500 ms, the alarm is cancelled automatically. No actions required.
