Holy Communion: On The Tongue Or In The Hand?

I grew up receiving the Holy Communion on my tongue. As a cradle Catholic it never occurred to me that I was being more reverent by receiving on my tongue. I didn’t even know receiving in the hand was an option opened to lay people. When I joined the Benedictines in 1992, I realized that all the monks – both priests and lay brothers – received Holy Communion in their hands. My reaction at the time was, ‘well, it seems different and more convenient.’ I always believed that a good communion is a matter of the heart’s disposition. Of course, I am mindful of Jesus’ teachings against over emphasis on external piety as a misconception of true holiness (Mt 23:25-32). He insisted on having the right kind of interior disposition (Mt 5, 6, & 7 are all about the heart). He equally taught that “…the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth” (Jn 4:23). For the record, the official position of the Church is that reception of the Holy Communion can either be in the hand or on the tongue depending on the pastoral discretion of the local church. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: “Those who receive Communion may receive either in the hand or on the tongue, and the decision should be that of the individual receiving, not of the person distributing Communion.” (https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/order-of-mass/liturgy-of-the-eucharist/the-reception-of-holy-communion-at-mass). I was, therefore, taken aback by the backlash against the bishops for asking Catholics to receive Communion in their hands during the coronavirus pandemic. Reactions from some of our brethren were quick, visceral and emotional. To be fair, I sincerely understand how people who have received communion on the tongue since childhood could be uncomfortable about the new, albeit temporary reception in their hands. Nobody should be blamed for feeling uneasy or irreverent about the suspension of reception on the tongue. What is unfortunate, theologically and historically, incorrect is the way some people have pushed the unfounded belief that receiving Holy Communion in the hand is somehow uncatholic, irreverent, and a form of desecration. Please, note that this belief is completely wrong and definitely not the official teaching of the Catholic Church. Our bishops, guided by the Holy Spirit, cannot mislead us when it comes to the fundamental practices of our faith. And so, to question the authenticity of their pastoral guidance is to implicitly deny the presence of the Holy Spirit in their leadership. True humility demands that we trust and obey them. Thus, whether one receives on the tongue or in the hand does not increase or decrease the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. One who receives on the tongue is not holier or more reverent than the one who receives in the hand. It is the heart, the interior disposition of the communicant that matters to God. For “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Sam 16:7). To be continued next week.

La Santa Comunión: ¿En la lengua o en la mano?

Crecí recibiendo la Sagrada Comunión en mi lengua. Como católico de cuna, nunca se me ocurrió que fuera más

reverente recibirla en mi lengua. Ni siquiera sabía que recibir en la mano era una opción para los laicos. Cuando entré en la Orden de los Benedictinos en 1992, me di cuenta de que todos los monjes - tanto sacerdotes como hermanos laicos - recibían la Sagrada Comunión en sus manos. Mi reacción en ese momento fue, "bueno, parece diferente y más conveniente". Siempre creí que una buena comunión es una cuestión de disposición del corazón. Por supuesto, soy consciente de las enseñanzas de Jesús en contra del énfasis excesivo en la piedad externa como un concepto erróneo de la verdadera santidad (Mt 23:25-32). Él insistió en tener el tipo correcto de disposición interior (Mt 5, 6 y 7 son todos sobre el corazón). Igualmente enseñó que "...los verdaderos adoradores adorarán al Padre en el Espíritu y en verdad" (Jn 4:23). Por lo tanto, me sorprendió la reacción contra los obispos por pedir a los católicos que recibieran la Comunión en sus manos durante la pandemia del coronavirus. Las reacciones de algunos de nuestros hermanos fueron rápidas, viscerales y emocionales. Para ser justos, entiendo sinceramente cómo la gente que ha recibido la comunión en la lengua desde la infancia puede sentirse incómoda con la novedad, aunque sea una recepción temporal en sus manos. Nadie debería ser culpado por sentirse incómodo o irreverente por la suspensión de la recepción en la lengua. I have always been a huge fan of the poem “Footprints in the Sand”. For those of you who have never heard or read it before, the basic message is that when you saw two sets footprints in the sand that was the time that God was walking with you, when you see only one set of footprints those were the times that God carried you. To take it even one step further, Fr John Vogel used to say when see a line in the sand that’s when God dragged you kicking and screaming. Like the story of the journey to Emmaus, we tend not to see God when he is walking beside us or even carrying us through something that we are going through in our life. We live in a world where there are so many things that blind us from seeing God that we often forget that he is right by our side every day. This is the message we are trying to convey to our year 2 teens this weekend. We want them to know that even through all of the chaos, God is with them. No matter how bad or scary things may seem or get, God is with them. Please pray for our teens as they enter their last leg of their Confirmation journey and pray for our team who is guiding them.

Siempre me ha gustado mucho el poema "Huellas en la arena". Para aquellos de ustedes que nunca lo han escuchado o leído, el mensaje básico es que cuando ves dos pares de huellas en la arena es el momento en que Dios está caminando contigo, cuando ves un solo par de huellas son los momentos en que Dios te lleva en sus brazos. Para ir un paso más allá, el Padre John Vogel solía decir que cuando ves una línea en la arena es cuando Dios te llevaba arrastrando, pataleando y gritando. Como la historia del viaje a Emaús, tendemos a no ver a Dios cuando camina a nuestro lado o incluso nos lleva a cargano Vivimos en un mundo e donde hay tantas cosas que nos impiden ver a Dios que a menudo olvidamos que está a nuestro lado todos los días. Este es el mensaje que intentamos transmitir a nuestros jóvenes de segundo año este fin de semana. Queremos que sepan que a pesar de todo el caos, Dios está con ellos. No importa que tan mal o horribles parezcan se ponen las cosas, Dios está con ellos. Por favor, recen por nuestros jóvenes cuando entran en su última etapa de su viaje de confirmación y recen por nuestro equipo que los están guiando.

FIESTA DE LA FE El saludo litúrgico Uno de los grandes aportes del Concilio Vaticano II fue el reconocimiento de la presencia de Cristo no sólo en las especies eucarísticas del pan y el vino consagrados, sino también, en la asamblea de creyentes. Esta afirmación crea ya un cambio de enfoque y de actitud hacia quien por cuatro siglos había sido espectadora en la celebración litúrgica. Hubo un gran cambio, no sólo de la contemplación del misterio a la celebración gozosa del mismo misterio, sino en el pensamiento mismo de la Iglesia respecto a sí misma como pueblo de Dios y no sólo como orden jerárquico. Por tal razón, el presbítero, quien preside nuestra liturgia y celebra con todos nosotros, nos saluda con “El Señor esté con ustedes”. Este es un saludo litúrgico que lleva en sí mismo un gran peso teológico: Él reconoce en el pueblo de Dios la presencia de Cristo y saluda esa presencia. La reconoce. La honra. El pueblo mismo, en respuesta, reafirmando la presencia de Cristo en él, responde: “Y con tu espíritu”. FEAST OF FAITH Watching for Christ’s Coming In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the future. Memory meets action. In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, “Never forget what I did for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He calls us to remember by doing, to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there, “celebration is wholly communion and feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. Deck the halls safely As we continue under Covid-19 restrictions, many families will be celebrating Christmas entirely in their own homes this year, in place of parties and traditional holiday outings. Keep basic safety guidelines in mind as you decorate. Use surge protectors and outlet strips for extra lights around the house and tree,

and make sure to cover unused sockets to keep little hands and fingers out. Inspect your lights and any battery-operated decorations to make sure they are working properly; frayed light strands and old batteries could be fire hazards.
