THE ARCHBISHOPS' APPEAL FOR £100,000. FOR THE CHURCH IN CHINA- By this Appeal we arc asked to help the Church of England to make a gift of £100,000 to the Church in China, in the hour of her great need- China has been ravaged by eight years of war, and this has left the church in a dire state of poverty. We are glad to say that, so far, a sum of £2. has been received, and if there are any who feel kindly disposed to help this most deserving cause, the Rector will be glad to receive their jontri-butions.

THE ANNUAL PARISH CHURCH MEETING will be held at the G.F.S .Hut on Wednesday, March 20th at 7 p.m. , and we hope that a large number will make a special effort to attend. This meeting should be of the great interest to all Church people because it is at this Meeting that representatives to the Parochial Church Council, and other bodies, are

elected; a report of the Church finances is presented; and matters of gen

eral Church interest are discussed. After the business of the meeting is concluded, there will be an interval for light refreshments, and this shall be followed by an entertainment kindly arranged by Mr.S.H.Field

C.M.S. .BOXES. The Rector hopes to collect the Boxes for the church Missionary Society during the month of March. We are sometimes reminded that to spread the Gospel of Christ is the first claim upon c hristion discipleship. We must all recognise, too, that this is the supreme need of the world today. For the world today is hungry for the good News of the Gospel of Christ, and it is for us to help to satisfy this hunger j our generous support of all missionary enterprise.

ST.MARY!S FREEWILL OFFERING. We are glad to report that the amount contributed under this Scheme during the month cf January is £1.5.0., for which we are most grateful. We would liko to take avan- tage of this opportunity of assuring all subscribers that all money col-lected by this F.W.O. is devoted entirely to St, .Mary's Church

MOTHERS' UNION. Those of us who were able to attend the Exhibition and Conference in Ashford saw a splendid demonstration of the work of the Mothers' Union both at home and overseas. There was something of interost for everyone, including an excellent G.F.S Stall with most helpful literature and invalids' needlework. The talks were most helpful and it was good to see many young mothers and children joining lh the very happy "family" atmosphere which prevailed.

Our own meeting on May 22nd was a happy one too, for we made "Joy" the theme of the afternoon, and Mrs.Lord of Smardcn emphasised this in her talk. We are looking forward with great pleasure to the visit of Mrs.Rose (the wife of tho Bishop of Dover) on June 26th, and hope to make this a vory special meeting with as many members and friends with us as possible.

The Parochial Church Council feel that this is a very heavy burden to shoulder in addition to the extraordinarily generous response we have already made to our own appeal of £1,000.; but they feel that we cannot disregard the pressing needs of the Dioccse of which wo are a part, and that we must do our utmost to discharge our obligations, even though it means a very special effort involving real sacrifice, Wo feel sure that Church people in Pluckloy will make the effort required. Certain measures have already been decided upon, namely: (l) The collections at the services on tho day when the Parish Church is re-opened are to be devoted to this Fund; (2) Tho Rector hopes to sit in the Church on a day to be fixed, for the purpose of receiving Thanksgiving gifts; (3) Dances will bo organised by Mr.& Mrs.Winder; (4) A Sale of Work.

MOTHERS' UNION. Mrs.Rose spoke on "progress in the life of Prayer" at our meeting on June 26th, when there was a nice gathering of mombers and frionds, and we much appreciated her friendly presence among us again. We are holding a service at St.Mary's Church on July 17th, when the preacher will be the Rev.S.R.Griggs, Rector of Smarden. Mrs.Gann has kindly invited us to tea in her garden afterwards. On July 24th most of our members arc visiting the Rev.& Mrs.Pyper at Ospringe - an outing to which we look forward with great pleasure.

Tho whole village will mourn with our old friend Mr.james Wood and his family, tho loss of his dear wife, who passed away on August 21st. Like her husband, she was cheerful and God-foaring, and to many of us it was a beautiful and inspiring sight to see them worshipping in Church together, regularly Sunday by Sunday, until the last. Any charitable object was assured of her ready help, partic-ularly as a skilled needlewoman, a gift she freely bestowed with little or no publicity. Her passing is a break in a life-long partnership which has been a pattern to us all, and we trust that her dear ones will be given much comfort in the knowledge of a life's work well done. Her memory will long be cherishcd and honoured in the village. May she rest in peace.

THE CHURCH RESTORATION AMD IMPROVEMENT FUND. Wo thankfully acknowledge further contributions to this Fund, which now stands as under:-

We very much regrct that the work of restoration appears to have come to a standstill, no work having "been done for several months, and we are afraid that we must reconcile ourselves to the unpleasant fact that it will be a long timo before we can worship again in our lovely old Parish Church. This, of course, is due to the fact that there is a great building drive on throughout tho country so as to provide homes for our

Wepeople. all recognise that this need is most urgent, and we must sympathise entirely with it. So, until this need is more adequately supplied, we must go on waiting with what patience we can. Wo should all love to get back to the Parish Church, and it is a thousand pities that we should be so long excludod from it, but we still, however, do possess two places of worship - St.Mary's Church and tho Rectory Hut, and we have not yot found them to bo too inconveniently crowded, which, no doubt, is very sad reflection on our habits of worship.

We are glad, however, to report one pleasing feature, which is that the Children's Corner has been cleaned by a few lovers of the Church, and will be used by the Parish Church Sunday School until the cold weather sets in. It is good to see at least this one small oorner of God's House restored to use, and it will once again be in the child-ren's special care. We trust that this small beginning will soon be followed by the completo recovery of our beautiful and boloved Churoh.

CHRISTMAS DAY. On Christmas Day there will be a Celebration of the Holy Communion at the Rectory Hut at 7 and 8 a.m.; and Morning Service at 11 and Holy Communion at 12 at St.Mary's Church,

THE DEATH OP MR. HENRY EVENDEN. By the death of Mr.Henry Evenden which took place at his home on Sunday morning, November 24th, we have suffered a very great loss, both in our Church and Village life. He was a great churchman, and a singularly fine example of a godly and a Christian life. He loved his Church with a great love nnd was for many years a devout, faithful and regular worshipper at our lovoly old Parish Church, and laterly, at the Rectory Hut. He had held the office of Church warden for forty-four years and had also been a School Manager - a very proud record of devoted and faithful service. He will indeed be sadly missed, and our life in pluckley will be the poorer for his passing. He has fought a good fight, he has finished his course, he has kept his Faith. If it could be said of anyone, it could be most truly said of him that "for him all the trumpets sounded on the other side". We thank God for his life, and for all He had enabled him to be and to do. His godly example must be an inspiration to all of us. We humbly commend his soul

to God's gracious keeping; and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his

family in their sad bereavement.
