Plans for the Year

In my work managing three shelters for women andchildren I meet many smart, beautiful and strongwomenamong the dedicated staff and also thewomen that succeed in leaving their violent homes andbravely facing the unknown. I also meet many goodpeople that are happy to give and see their donationsas a blessing. Its always a pleasure meeting them,sharing our activities with them, and enabling them toassist us.

Unfortunately, during the September holiday seasonthis year, we received innumerable requests at ourshelters. Despite the Welfare Ministrys policy, whichwas initiated two years ago to deal with domesticviolence within the community, making the shelters theabsolutely final resource, the number of requests wehad in September was equal to those weve had overthe last two years and for the same reasons during thistimeframe.

We are very sorry about the Ministry of Welfarespolicy. We agree that it would be preferable foreveryonewomen, children and the society overallifthe woman and her children could stay safely in theirhome while the violent man receives treatment. Itsimportant to know that the shelter is not an ideology!The need for shelters arises as a result of the harsh

reality in which a woman finds herself in life-threatening danger as long as the violent man knowswhere to find her. She is in constant and seriousdanger that doesnt end due to the incomprehensiblefact that the violent man feels he has no problem andrefuses treatment.

Any way you look at it, the sad result is: our sheltersare always full. We are always happy to help the peoplewho need it and wed be happy to help many manymore. It is very hard for us to know that a woman and

her children are in danger or in the streets, without aroof over their heads, and we have no way of helpingthem.

Therefore, our organizations focus and goal for thecoming years is to build three new shelters that canaccommodate and help more women and childrenescape the cycle of violence. These new homes will bewarm, comfortable and pleasant. Our fantastic staff willcontinue working with dedication and love. In order toachieve this goal, we are making special fundraisingefforts, counting on our loyal donors and seeking outnew resources.

The overall yearly budget for our organization is about10 million NIS, not including the building of the threenew shelters. The construction of each new shelter isabout 7 million NIS. This means that beyond ourongoing efforts to raise around 5 million NIS a year,

(the Ministry of Welfare gives us around 5 million NIS ayear for the three shelters and will not support ourefforts for building the new shelters) we must raiseabout 21 million NIS through our own fundraising. Wehave approximately 60% of this amount to date.

We invite you to join us and help with the importantwork of breaking the cycle of violence and helpingpeople out of their dire existence and sometimes evena certain death, to move up and on to a brighter future.We can help them make real and lasting changes in

their lives and the lives of their children. We are alwayshappy to host you in one of our shelters or come andspeak to you about the women and childrens livesbefore the shelter and inside it.

The Holidays in the Rishon LeZion Shelter

In the Rishon shelter every month we have a joint activity with the

Rishon Police Department, as was described in our last newsletter. Thismonth the policemen brought dogs that specialize in locating drugs andexplosives. The policemen demonstrated to the children how the dogs dotheir work and involved them in the process.

On the Simchat Torah holiday, as in previous years, the volunteer Ms.Ziva Blasberg invited the women and children for lunch in the succah atthe Chefetz Chaim synagogue. The children danced with the Torah andgot candies and gifts.

About a month ago, two girls doing their national service started workingin our shelter. I am happy to announce that the girls are managing very

nicely with the children They help them with homework and enjoyafternoon activities together. We are continuing our classes: cooking,music, laughter yoga, art and more.

The Activities in Hadera

The house we moved to is filling up with women and children, but alsowith exciting donations like the one we got from the artist Dalia Branover.She gave us beautiful pictures that we hung in our living room and arebringing us what they say on them: happiness, love and joy.

We had an especially sweet workshop of sugar dow with Meital who came to us from

Lehavim (in the south). It was so tasty !

Thank you Meital ! we only wish you lived closer to us.

The women took part in a wonderful painting workshop with Aya. Theypainted beautiful planters that were used for planting spices and we areusing them to decorate our yard in the shelter.

We danced and played instruments with Avie Shitrit in a percussionworkshop that was really a lot of fun! Thank you to Avie, whovolunteered to come and also to Shosh from Bituach Leumi whointroduced us to this amazing man

The Months Activities in the Herzliya Shelter

The holidays in the shelter were pleasant, enjoyable and exciting. OnRosh HaShana we made an apple cake with the children, and we had aworkshop where we made apples out of recycled paper.

The children enjoyed the experience of visiting the synagogue and a wonderful man

named Yaacov came to the shelter to blow the shofar for them.

On the Sukkot holiday we built a big succah with the children in the yard.We built a small succah in the nursery and the children decorated it.

All of the mothers and their children went to a fun day at the Kibbutz GlilYam pool. A magician came to the shelter and wowed us with his magic.We went on a trip to Ein HaShofet and visited the Ahava farm. Weenjoyed the fun producing grape juice from smashing grapes in Gat.
