Next Gen

Next Gen is the FAA term for a new,

satellite based air navigation system.

This system will allow flight crews to

select their own routes rather than being

confined to the current ground based grid

system.

It will also reduce weather delays by

providing more up to date weather data.

Next Gen

Next Gen technology was first tested in

Alaska airspace through the CAPSTONE

program.

Next Gen

Components of Next Gen include:

1. Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS)

enabled GPS.

2. Automatic Dependant Surveillance –

Broadcast (ADS-B)

3. Controller Pilot Data Link Communication

(CPDLC)

WAAS Enabled GPS

WAAS Enabled GPS

WAAS enabled GPS provides a more accurate

location fix than the original GPS system.

- WAAS enabled GPS will be required by 2020

- WAAS enabled GPS currently gives an aircraft

the capability to perform Localizer Performance

with Vertical Guidance (LPV) approaches to

more than 3,000 US approaches

WAAS enabled GPS units must meet TSO-C146a

WAAS Enabled GPS

WAAS enabled GPS will be the most expensive

portion of Next Gen technology for the aircraft

owner-operator

ADS-B

ADS-B

ADS-B consists of two Systems:

1. ADS-B out which will broadcast aircraft

information such as identification, position,

velocity, and altitude

2. ADS-B in which will receive:

Flight Information System (FIS) and

Traffic Information System (TIS)

ADS-B will utilize two frequencies:

1. 978 MHZ on a UAT

2. 1090 MHZ on an Extended Squitter

CPDCL

CPDLC

CPDLC is an ACARS based VHF Data Link

which uses existing ARINC and SITA networks

CPDLC uses VHF Com, Iridium, or Inmarsat

CPDLC will be recorded on CVR rather than FDR:

This will require an FMS software change.

Next Gen Key Dates:

- All aircraft operating in controlled airspace

must be Next Gen compliant by Jan. 1, 2020

- All ADS-B ground infrastructure will be

complete by Dec. 31, 2013
