S.P.G. Sunday.

The annual sermons on behalf of S.P.G. wiIl be preached on Sunday, November 25th. The Preacher a t Evensong will be the Rev. T. W . Lambert, Vicar of Tuffley, who worked for some years in the West Indies and will therefore be able to tell us from personal know- ledge something of the Church's work in that interesting part of the world.

The Vicar would be glad if the Missionary Boxes are returned at Evensong on Sunday, December 2nd. The ontents will be pre- -6" sented a t the Altar an Missionary Interces- sions offered in place of the 2nd Prayers.

The Bazaar. Saturday, October 20th, was a great day for

us. T h e School presented a most pleasing picture in its Oriental decoration. The fancy dresses of the Stallholders and other helpers gave a distinctly Eastern and picturesque touch. The band of workers who spent a good part of Friday and Saturday morning in decorating the Schools are to be congratulated on the result of their labours. The opening ceremony took place at 3 p.m. The Vicar, who presided, expressed the pleasure it gave him and Mrs. Joyce to welcome Mrs. Blake- way, who was an old friend of theirs a t Tuffley. The Bazaar was being held for two objects. T h e first was to augment the sum of £63 raised last year for the renovation of the Church. H e was anxious to make this £63 into £100, when he would feel justified in obtaining estimates for the necessary work. The second object of the Bazaar was to raise funds for the repairs a t the Day School. For some years the Board of Education had asked for alterations to be made and repairs executed, and it had become necessary for this work to be carried out. During the past two years £420 had been spent on the Schools, and of this big sum the Managers were responsible for £260. By means of Grants, Subscriptions and Parochial efforts, all except £50 had been obtained. They had an excellent body of Managers a t the present time, and he hoped they would be supported in their efforts to raise the outstanding £50. H e hoped, there- fore, that they would raise £37 for the Church and £25 for the Schools by this effort. In conclusion he thanked all those who had con- tributed in any way to the Bazaar.

Mrs. Blakeway was greeted with applause on rising to declare the Bazaar open. She was

! most pleased to come, especially as Mr. and Mrs. Joyce were old friends. She wished the Bazaar every success, and hoped their efforts would be abundantly rewarded. A bouquet (the gift of Mrs. Marshall) was handed to Mrs. 1 Blakeway by Miss Betty Jones.

Mr. J. R. Worgan proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Blakeway, and this was seconded by I Mr. H. J. Davies and carried. The proceed- ings closed with the ringing of the National / Anthem. The business of the afternoon was

, then proceeded with. 1 The following is a list of Stalls, Stallholders I and other helpers :-Vicarage Working Par ty

The ladies in charge were :-Miss Williams, Mrs. Macfar- lane, Mrs. Russell Jarrett, the Misses Trewin, Miss Young and Miss Cornock, assisted a s Waitresses by Misses Wasley, Jenkins, Dale, E. Morgan, I. Wildin, N. James, M. and W. Baker, M. Batt. 1 The Stewards and General Helpers included

I Messrs. A. E. Downes, C. F. Thomas, W . A. , Vaughan, F. Mountjoy, T. Marshall, H. J. Walker, R. Lodge, F. E. Jones, G. Royal, F. J. Watkins, W. A. Thomas and Choir Boys. Mr. M. J. Davies undertook the duties of Treasurer and Ticket Secretary. The general I arrangements were made by Mrs. Joyce.

I At the Dance, which was held a t 7-30, Mr. ' W . Watson acted a s M.C., and a company of about 50 spent a very enjoyable time.

A Whist Drive, in connection with the Bazaar, was held a t the Miners' Hall a t 7-30 p.m. This was organized by Messrs. A. E.

Downes and W. A. Vaughan, the refreshment department being in the hands of Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Royal, Mrs. Beale and Mrs. Saunders. Mr. W . J . Burdess proved an efficient M.C.

With such a band of willing helpers the Bazaar was a very happy time indeed, and even if the financial result was not quite so successful as we had hoped, due no doubt to the short number of shifts worked a t the pits during the preceding week, it proved to be a gigantic social success. A great, attraction was the music played by the Vernon Band (under Mr. V. Jones) during the afternoon and evening, and the pianoforte interludes rendered by Mr. Young. The subscriptions received up to the time of our going to press are as follows : G. Sheffield Blakeway, Esq. (Tuffley) £3 3s.; R. R. Bowles. Esa.. and Miss Bowles £3 ; Mrs. ~ e r c i v a l £2 ; W . Smith, Esq., £1 Is.; Mrs. Bathurst £1 ; G. T. Whitfield, Esq. (Tuffley) £1 ; Mrs. Parker (Cheltenham) 10s.; Miss Jarrett 10s.; J . Beal, Esq., 5s.; " A Well Wisher " 5s. ; Miss Marshall 4s. ; Mrs. R. Shingles 2s. 6d. The total amount received to date is £44 0s. 5d. As there are several amounts still to come in, we cannot give the exact figures, but we anticipate that when all amounts are received and accounts paid our net proceeds will be about £45. Perhaps some friends who read these lines will generously support our efforts by sending along their cheques. If so, we may still hope to reach the £63 asked for. W e must have a small sale later on, and offer the things left over a t reduced prices. There was only one real disappointment, and that was that only two Cakes were sent in for competition, but we decided to award the prizes a s stated in the October Magazine. Mr. Downham kindly judged the cakes, and the 1st Prize of 41- was awarded to Miss Marshall and the 2nd Prize of 216 to Mrs. R. J. Shingles. Both ladies generously returned their prizes a s subscrip- tions to the funds. Our grateful thanks to everyone who helped in any way.

Parochial Church Council.

The Council met on October Ist, the Vicar presiding. During a lengthy discussion on Church Finance, the Vicar stated that the Income for Church Collections for the first nine months of the present year was about 61- below that for the corresponding period of last year. The special efforts (including the Lent Boxes) which had been made up to date, had

resulted in wiping off the deficit on last year's accounts. This meant that if the income for the remaining, three months was much the same a s that for last year, the deficit on the 1928 accounts could not be less than £20. The Council thereupon resolved to endeavour to increase the income, by means of a Special Effort Box, similar to the Lent Boxes. W e hope that many members of the congregation will take one of these Boxes and return them on December 16th. I t was decided to hold Whist Drives in the Miners' Hall on Satur- day, November 17th, and Saturday, December 8th, the general arrangements being left in the hands of Messrs. A. E. Downes and W. A. Vaughan. I t was further decided not to book the Miners' Hall for any fixtures between Christmas and Easter.

Harvest Thanksgiving. The services of thanksgiving for the safe

ingathering of the Harvest were well attended. On September 27th, the Rev. A. Hoyle was the Preacher, and on Sunday evening the Rev. C. R. Williams occupied the pulpit. Mr. Gegg gave an address to the children in the after- noon. W e are most grateful to all those who sent so liberally of their produce. These gifts were sent to the Dilke Hospital, and the Matron expressed her very real thanks to Mr. Churchwarden Downes. W e also desire to express our thanks to all those ladies and gen- tlemen (there must have been not less than 20) who most kindly helped to decorate and to dust the Church. I t was really a splendid Festival.

Dedication Festival. This Festival began on Saturday, October

13th (the day on which our Church was conse- crated 102 years ago), with a Celebration of the Holy Communion a t 8 a.m. At this Cele- bration the Gough Communion Vessels, dated 1680, were used. Truly our thoughts wandered to those dear souls who partook of the Blessed Sacrament from those same vessels before the year 1855, when the vessels now in use were presented to the Parish. At Evensong on Sunday, October 14th, the preacher was the Rev. S. G. Bush. A Special Service was held on October 17th, when the sermon was preached by the Rev. L. P. Jones. Sunday, October Zlst, was observed as a day of thanks- giving for blessings received. The Vicar reached both morning and evening on

Thanksgiving." I t was a very happy and inspiring Festival that we spent together.
