The Hawaiian language is alive and growing in influence. Hawaiian is now the primary

language in many classrooms and other settings but there is still a great need to make

Hawaiian more accessible to more learners. To address this need we have included

basic Hawaiian words and phrases in the English translation of No ka Wai o ka Puna

Hou. Hawaiian language lessons and a glossary are also included at the back of this

book to provide additional learning opportunities. Our hope is that readers will discover

that learning Hawaiian can be fun and rewarding.

This mo olelo takes place at Pu uomänoa in Mänoa Valley. Mükäkä was the käne and Kealoha

was his wahine. They along with the other people of Mänoa were in the midst of a drought.

No rain fell and the streams and springs dried up. There was very little to eat as it was a time of

famine a very pa akikï time.

Every day Mükäkä hiked long and far i uka into the valley to get the roots of the kï and young

fern shoots. These were the only mea ai he could find to eat. Meanwhile Kealoha walked long and

far i kai toward the sea to Kamö ili ili. There flowed a spring of fresh wai to fill her water gourds.

When the hue wai were full she would once again make the long trip back to the kauhale.

Kealoha was elderly and no longer an öpio. Her frail body was luhi from carrying the hue wai

on the long trail back. One day the long road and the luhi of her kino were too much. She was

exhausted! A ole lä! I can t do it! she cried. I can t carry this wai all the way back home.

Then she realized they couldn t live without wai. She thought to herself Kä! A ole au e

hä awipio. She would not let herself fail. This water means life for me and my käne. She stood

up and shouldered the hue wai. As she made her way back to the hale the wind picked up and

blew dirt into the air covering her face and blinding her vision. But she kept walking. The makani

was so strong it nearly blew Kealoha over but she kept walking.

When she arrived at her hale she saw her käne Mükäkä preparing mea ai for the two of them.

But Kealoha was too sore and luhi to eat. Instead she lay down on the moena cried in pain and

agony and fell asleep. In her dreams a man visited her and asked about her tears. No ke aha?

Why are you crying?

Kealoha answered My body is stiff and eha. Every day I make the long hot dusty trip all the

way to Kamö ili ili to get wai for me and my käne. I am completely luhi!

Kealoha awoke and immediately told Mükäkä what she heard in her moe uhane. But Mükäkä

Kealoha decided to take a look at the pühala for herself. The land beneath the pühala was dry and

barren and she began to doubt the moe uhane. Pehea lä? she wondered. How is it possible

to find wai in this place where it is so malo o? Maybe my käne was pololei.

out of the ground.

Mükäkä awoke early at dawn thinking O ia kä! I had the same moe uhane as my wahine! That

Mükäkä quickly returned to the kauhale and made preparations. When the i a ula was cooked

Mükäkä s hoaaloha looked down at the honua. It was like an anchor keeping the pühala stuck

and immovable. He complained Makehewa! There is no use in continuing. A ohe wai o lalo!

There s no wai under there! We ve been fooled. We re wasting our time just like trying to find

ala alapüloa weeds on the plains.

Mükäkä replied He oia i o nö! The dreams were real! Twice that kanaka visited me and my

wahine. I believe him. Makepono! Let s try to huki again. Mükäkä offered another pule. And then

Mükäkä grabbed his ö ö and started digging through the lepo of the pit. Spring water began to

bubble up. Kupanaha! Kealoha saw this and shouted Ka puna hou! The new spring!

The other känaka of the kauhale helped to dig until the wai flowed steadily. Lo i kalo were built

and stocked with i a to grow among the kalo plants. And so ka puna hou not only provided wai

but also the nourishment of ai and i a. The land was alive again and thriving and the akua were

to thank for this pömaika i.

Time passed and many makahiki later a school was built near the spring. It was named Punahou

after the words Kealoha first exclaimed when she saw the bubbling wai. At Pu uomänoa in the

1. Öpio (children and youth) When Kealoha travels all the way to Kamö ili ili to fetch water she nearly

gives up in exhaustion. What made Kealoha keep going? What makes you

want to finish something even when you feel like giving up?

2. Ohana (extended family) A man comes to Kealoha and Mükäkä in their dreams and tells them about

the nearby spring. Dreams are very important in Hawaiian culture. They

may warn direct foretell the future or explain things that have already

happened. When you wake in the morning do you remember your dreams?

Do you talk about them with your ohana? Is there someone in your ohana

who can help interpret your moe uhane?

3. Papa kula (classroom) Springs are an important source of water especially for people who don t

have access to streams. Talk to your papa (class) about how we get water in

Hawai i and how precious our water resources are. Where does the water

used in your school come from?

4. Kaiaulu (community)When Kealoha exclaimed Ka puna hou! her words of excitement and

gratitude gave rise to the name of a place and eventually the name of a

school. Have you heard any stories that explain the names of places in your
