(c) thereafter pursued the program of study in the University to the satisfaction ofthe Vice-Chancellor as prescribed by these By-Laws and other Regulations andRules of the University;

(d) satisfied the Examiners at the prescribed Written Examinations, Classloom Tests,Practical Assignments, Term-Papers, the Independent Project or the Dissertation,the viva voce examination of Independent Project or the Dissertation embodyingresearch on a subject approved by the Faculty; ''":r"i

Part II - Courge StructureThe BBA Degree shall be a full+ii'ne four'year program and conducted on s€nrester basis.The duration of each semester shall, under normal circumstances, be a continuous periodof 26 weeks from its beginning.

The Courses leading to the award of the BBA Degree shall extend over eight Semesbns of theProgram.covering Theory and Practical co*por.,*t, Continuous Aesessmenb, work on theDissertation or the Independent Project on:n approved Research ropic as prescribed byREgulations and/or Rutes of the university. 12. The course work relevant to the Program shall consist of lectures, tutorials, practical classes and' other assignments on cours€s,'as shall'be presdfiee*fby fnlffinEffitrmff-dF6nfii€fitlllti$ffi1i* r'-:

the Faculty. The list of courses, the syllabuses and the number of question papers in each courseof the Program shall be those set out under Regulations passed by the Senate from time to time.

The Senate shall have power, on the recomrnendation of the Faculty Board to change,amend, add, delete courses/ their syllabuses as well as the number, structure and rubric ofquestion papers in courses leading to the award of the BBA Degree.

The medium of the instruction shall be English. However supplementary lectures may beconducted in Sinhala/Tamil medium only for the Level-I program.

The Dissertation option and the Independ.ent Project option of the Program shall consist ofstudy and research towards the preparation and submission of a Dissertation or an IndependentProject based on an approved Research Topic. Be{ore a studqn!-comme4cgg her Djsse-rtation orIndependent Project, she shall submit a proposal for the same'to"the relevant academicDeparknent for approval. A student shall not proceed with the research towards thepreparation of the Dissertation or the Independent Project until the Departrnent approves theproposal.

(1), The Level-I program shall consists of four semesters and shall becommon for all students of the BBA degree program irrespective of their areas ofspecialization.

(2). The Level-I program shall consist of four course clusters namety Basic

Disciplinary courses, Environrnental Learning courses, General Skill courses andManagernent & Business Skill courses a$ prescribed by these By-Laws andRegulations.

(3) The categories of courses indicated in (2) above shall comprise of core-coursesand optional courses. The core-courses that are compulsory for all studenb shallcomprise of 54 credits. A shrdent should earn a minimum of 06 credits from theoptional courses of the Level-I program.

(4) If a student has obtained more courses than the required minimum 06 ireditsfrom the optional courses in the Level-I program, then the courses for whichmost satisfactory performance have been obtained shall be considered for theexamination purpose" fhe courses which rnay not be considered for theexamination purpose shall be considered as audited courses and the titles of suchaudited courses shall be indicated in the detailed certificate issued by theUniversity.

Performance of a candidate at the BBA Program shall be evaluated tfuough a

combined system of Continuous Assessment and end-of-semester Examination.

For the final grading of the Program, the Continuous Asses-s-ment and the end'of-semestex Examination shall be marked out of a maximum mark as given below:

A candidate shall present herself for each end-of'semester examination of a courseleading to the Degree of BBA on the first occasion on which the examination is held afterthe completion of the relevant course taken by that candidate, provided that it shall bewithin the power of the Senate to permit her to sit on a subsequent ocggsion if'she'has'.,, :i !'!: i '

been prevented from sitting the examination due to illness or any other reasonable cause.In such cases where perrnission has been obtained, a candidate shall have six years asstipulated in 4 of Part-II of these By-Laws to complete the requirements for the award of&e BBA Degree without penalty.

A candidate who fails to complete any of the courses in the first attempt shall be eligibleto repeat this/these course/s on a maximum of two other subsequent occasions subjectto the condition 4 of part-ll of these By-Laws.

No candidate shall be consiclered to have passed the degree of BBA examination unlessshe passed the courses in Level-I andfor Level-II of the degree program and has alsoreached the Level-il of proficiency in English prescribed under these By-Laws and/orany other Regulations and Rules made by the University,

Performance of students in each course shall be grade<i and Point Value shall be assignedas given in Table 1.

The Examination leading to the award of the BBA Degree shall consist of the l"evel-I FirstSemester Examination, the Second Semester Eiamination, the Third SemesterExaminatiory and the Fourth Semester Examination and Level-II First SemesterEx4mination, the Second Semester Examination, the Third Semester Examination, andthe Fsurth Semester Examination. Each Semester Examination shall consist of one ormore than one written paper/s and such numbers of continuous a$sessments as areprescribed by the Regulations and,l or Rules relevant to this program.

A candidate is deemed to have failed a particular course if she has scored less than 4oyo(minimum-2.00 grade point) for that course. $he must repeat all courses so failed and obtain ascory of at least A0% (minimum 2.00 grade point) or

(3) the Head of the Department has certified that she has completed the course of studiesleading to the examination by.attending the required proportion of lectures, tutorialclasses and other forms of instructions in each courseiher student registration continues to be in forcs andher applicatioi for entry to the examination has been accepted.

A student in a particular Semester of the Degree Program and registered for particularCor.rses of the Semester shall take the Examination for that Semester on the firstoccasion on which the Examination is held after the completion of instruction for thatSemester.

(2) Where a student does not apply for and/or take the Examination on the first occasionshe shall be deemed, unless the Senate determines otherwise on the recommendationof the Faculfy, to have taken the Examination on that occasion which'shali be takeninto account in computing the total number of occasions on which an Examinationmay be taken by a student.

(3) A student who is excused by the Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Boardfrom taking the Examination on the first occasion shall take the Examination on thevery next occasion when it is held and if she faiis to apply for and/or take theExamination on that occasion she shall be deemed, unless the Senate determinesotherwise on the recommend.ation of the Faculty Board, to have taken the Examinationon that occasion which shall be taken intc account in computing the total number ofoccasions on which an Examination may be taken by a student

(4) A student shall not take any of the Exarnination more than three occasions and incomputing the total number of occasions there ehall be taken into account any occasionon which she is deemed to have taken the Exan-lination in terms of these By-laws.

(5) All rules relating to the Examination Procedure, Offenses and Punishment RegulationNo. 1 of 1986 shall be mutatis rnutandis apply to, or in relation to, the BBA Examination.

(6) Without prejudice to the generatrity of the Regulation No. 1 of 1986 rules relating to theClass Room Tests, etc shall tre formulated and implemented by the respective Head ofthe Departrnent and any matters relating to such tests shall be decided by the FacultyBoard on the recom.rnendation of the Head r:f the Departrnent and the Dean of theFaculty.

n Rules relating to Assignments, the Dissertation or Inclependent Project shall be'announced, from tjrne to time, by fhe respective Head of the Department inconsultation with teacherls and such rules shall not be changed or revoked unlessotherwise decided by the Faculty Board.

In the case of students who opt for the Dissertation cption or independent Project option theyshall nbt be eligibte to proceed with the work on the research pioject unlers theii researchproposals are approved by the respective Deparknent during the Third Semester of the Level-II program of the BBA degree.

A student who fails the Examination of her Dissertation or Independent Project to satisfy theExaminers shall be deemed to have failed the Examination and such studenf should resubmitthe DissertaHon or Independent Project to the respective Departrnent in the next semester orwithin the period specified by the respecti.ve Department

In case of stuclent who obtains a mark which is less than the pass mark for a compulsorycourse/compulsory course in a specialized stream, as prescribed under the By-Laws, thestudent shall re-sit such course as a repeat candidate on the first occasion at which thatExamination is held for such course. The student who obtains a mark which is less thanthe pass mark for an optional course shall take the same course if it is offered in the nextimmediate sernester or a different optional course which is offered in the next immediatesemester as an alternative to the course in which she obtained a mark which is less thanthe pass mark as a repeat candidate. No repeat candidate shall be permitted to repeatmore than two times a course in spite of that the student has taken the same course or analternative course in he r repeat attempts.

A student r.r'ho fails in one or more coulses of an end-of-semester Examination may retake theExamination again without attending practical or laboratory work etc in the repeating Semesterif the student has earned rnore than 4ff/o af the allocated marks for the Continuous Assessment.The marks obtained for the Continuous Assessm.ent will be carried forward to the repeatingSemester' In those cases,. the score of marks for the end-of-Semester Examination- in therepeating Semester and the Continuous Assessrnent carried forward shall be taken intoconsideration for the computation of results of the Degree Examination.

Part-IV Award of the Degree

No student shall quali$r for the award of the BBA Ilegree, unless she has :

"The.Itegistrar" means the Registrar, Acting Registrar, Deputy Registrar, Senior AssistantRegistrar, Assietant Registrar or any other Officeiauthorizei tosign-for and on behalf of theRegistrar of the University of Colombo.

"The Semester" means a period of 26 weeks from the first day of the commencement of aSemester till the day prior to the commencement of the next Semester and shalt include theintervening periods of vacation, study leave, written examinations, unless the Senate on therecommendation of the Faculty Board decides otherwise.

"The Senate" means the Senate of the University of Colombo.

"The University" means the University of Colombo

These Regulations may be cited as the Degree of Bachelor of Business Administration(Special) Regrrlations No. ...... of 20A4.

Part A,: li'he structure and Courses of the BFA program

Tire BBA Program shall be offered as a BBA Program or a BBA program in particularstreams, such as Accounting Strearn, Business Economics Stream, Finance Stream,Hospitality Management Stream, Human Resr:urces Management $heam and Marketingstream. The senate sha-llhave the right, on the ru"o*-".Jufion of the Faculty ;";t;,vary, add to, decrease or merge these streams/ sub-streams.

The courses offered for the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree shall be dividedinto two levels as Level-I program ancl Level-fi progranr.

The medium of instructions for botl"r Levels_ shall be English. However, supplementarylectures may be conducted in Sinhala / Tamil medium

A student reading for the BBA degree should earn minimuml2O credits for being eligrblefor the same irrespective of the area of specialization and shall earn a minimum 60credits from Level-I program and minimum 60 cred.its from Level-II prograrn.The 60 credits from Level-l program stipulated in above 8 shall be earned as follows:

(a). 54 credits from core-courses;(b). 06 credits from the rnajor-optional courses.

The 6 credits {rom the optional courses shall earn as 04 and 02 credits belong to thecourse category of (a) and (b) respectively as showrr in the Table j. above.

A student opted to select the BBA, without a particular area of speciaiization shall earn20 credits from the i\'Iajor'compulsory courses siipulated in 16 (b) above from the courseslisted under the General Management stream in Table-2.

(b) The compulsory courses offered for the BBA / BBA in a particuiar area of

specialization shall be considered as optional courses for another area ofspecialization

(a) Before the end of the seventh Semester, each stud.ent who takes the Dissertationoption or Independent Proiect option shali complete a proposal for the researchproject and shall submit it to the Head of the Department for approval.

(b) A student whose proposal for qhe Dissertation or Independent *oject is not' aPProved dhall re-submit a revised version of the proposal to the Head of the' Deparfrnent on or before the specified date for upp*""t.

(c) A student who's Proposal for the Dissertation or Independent project isapproved shall be assigned a supervisor by the re"pdtine Deparknent.

There shall not be an End-of-Course Examination for the Course titled Seminar oncontemporary issues in her arba of specialization.

Part B: Examinations of the Program

The Written Examination and the Continuous Assessment for any Course shall take thefollowing form:

For each Course other than the seminar on Conte.mporary issues in BBA/BBA inthe area of speclalization, there shall be a writen bpen or closed book End-of-semester Examination of 1,, 2 or 3 hours' duration consisting of compulsoryand/or selecfive questions as specified in the question paper. The question paperwill carry a maximum score of 100 marks.

Each Course of the Program, except where otherwise stated, shall carry a valueof one, two, three r:r four credits each. Dissertation and the independent projectshall carry a value of 05 credits and 02 credits respectively.

There shall also be a Continuous Assessment which may include individualand/or group mid-semester tests, quizzes, term papers, executive reports andpresentations, The Continuous Assessment of each Course shall be specified inthe course oufline which shall be distributed among the students at thebeginning of the Course and shall not be changed without consulting the Headof the'Deparknent. The Continuous Assessment shall carry a maximum of 100marks.

For the final grading of the Course, the End-of-semester Examination and theContinuous Assessment are evaluated as follows

Board at the beginning of the Eighth Semester and shall not exceed more *tanone month after the completion of the eighth semester.

The students shall submit, with the recommendation of the appoinfedSupervisor, two copies of the Dissertation in bound form with a hard cover andthe Independent Project in the form of spiral binding on or before the announceddate for submission.

The Dissertation shall not exceed 15,000 words and the independent Project 7,500words excluding Tables, Annexe$, Figures etc and shatt be submitted inaccordance with the format given in the Schedule.

The Dissertation and the Independent Project shall carry a maximum mark of L00each and a weightage of 05 credits and 02 credits respectively. The minimummark to be obtained by a student to pass the Dissertation and IndependentProject is 40% of the total mark allotted to it.

The Dissertation or lndependent Project shall be subjected to assessment by twoindependent examiners.

The Dissertation/Independent Project shall be sent for evaluation by the twoexaminers who would independently assess the Dissertation/brdependentProject and mark out of 100.

A student who fails to secure 40% mark at the evaluation by the two examinersshall be directed to re-submit the Dissertation/Independent Project once morewithin a specified period which shall not exceed six months.

Any question regarding the interpretation of these Regulations shall be referred to theCouncil whose decision thereon shall be final.

Schedule

The format of the final version of each Dissertation/Independent Project to be submitted as apartial fulfillment of the BBA Program of the Faculty of Management and Finance, unlessotherwise required by the Facuity, shall be in A4 {8.27" x1L.69") size paper and typewritten onone side of the paper only, double spaced and with margins of at least L 1/+" on the left side and 1"on the right side and 1" at the top anC bottorr of each page.

The two copies to be submitbd to the Assistant Registrar in charge of the subject of Examinationsshall include original copy and a carbon copies or a clear and fair photocopy.

The Dissertation/Independent Project shall incorporate in the following order:

(a) a title page grving the title of the Dissertation/Independent Projecf the degree forwhich it is submitted, with the name of the Faculty, the full name of the author and thedate of submission for the degree;

(b) a list of conterrts;(c) a list of tables and figures;(d) the following declaration, signed by the candidate:

Other-than these guidelines, stud.ents shall follow the American psychological Association (ApA)guidelines in the preparation of the Dissertation/Independent project.

Wherever possible, tables shall be inserted in the proper place in the text, but comprehensivetables shall appear as appendix/appendices.

The Dissertationllndependent Project shall be sewn, trimrned, bound and covered with darkcloth, leather or Rexene, preferably blue and black for Dissertation and lndependent projectrespectively

On the spine of the Dicsertation /lndependent Project there shall be given in lettering of suitablesize, the surnarne of the candidate and the title of the Dissertation/Independlnt project,abbreviated if necessary. If the iettering will not fit across the spine it shall rtrt ulot g the spinereading from top to bottom.

When published Papers are submitted as additional evidence they shaii be bound at the back ofthe Dissertation/Independent Project as an appendix.
