MTU’s low-pressure turbine for A320neo engine passes milestone

The high-speed low-pressure turbine for Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine to power the A320neo has passed the mandatory stress tests with flying colors. These extremely complex telemetry runs, an official certification requirement for this module made by MTU, are considered one of the biggest challenges in engine testing. They serve to measure the vi-brational stresses acting on the blades, along with the thermal load and temperature distri-bution. In a laborious manual process that took a couple of months, MTU’s high-speed low-pressure turbine was fitted with some 400 special measurement sensors. During 20 hours of test-ing, the propulsion system was put through its paces, also at overspeed conditions. The PW1100G-JM will enter into service on the Airbus A320neo next year. To date the PurePower engine family has completed more than 9,000 hours of testing, including more than 1,200 hours of flight test hours. Pratt & Whitney has more than 5,500 PurePower engine orders and commitments, including options.

Dreamliners have been allowed to operate up to 180 minutes away from a landing field since they were introduced into service in 2011. Granting of the expanded operational permission will allow airlines to introduce additional routes after they meet the proof of capabilities requirements and receive approval from their own regulatory agencies for such operations. ETOPS opera-tions will make the 787 even more efficient in operations as they enable more direct flight

IAI publishes financial statement for Q1 2014

Israel Aerospace Industries, Israel’s lead-ing aerospace and defense company, issued its consolidated interim financial statements for the three months ended March 31, 2014. The Company showed record sales and an increase in gross profit against the slowdown in the ac-tivities of the Bedek Aviation division and conversion of passenger aircraft to cargo configurations. The Company’s sales in Q1 2014 amounted to $979m compared to $849m in Q1 2013, a 15% increase. The increase in sales in Q1 2014 mainly arises from the growth in the Company’s military divisions – Systems Missiles and Space division, the Military Aircraft division and Elta. Operating income in Q1 2014 amounted to $15m (1.5% of sales) compared with $20m (2.4% of sales) in Q1 2013, a decrease of $5m reflecting a decrease of 25%, arising from the weakening of the U.S. dollar ex-change rate in relation to the NIS, the increase in in-house R&D expenses and the increase in selling and marketing expenses. Héroux-Devtek reports fiscal 2014 fourth quarter and year-end results

Consolidated sales from continuing operations amounted to C$91.2m, up from C$73.8m in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013. This C$17.4m increase reflects mainly a C$14.7m contribution over a two-month period from APPH. Sales to the commercial aerospace market increased 17.9% to c$38.0m reflecting commercial sales of C$6.9m from APPH over a two-month period. Excluding the latter, commercial sales declined slightly, as lower sales in the regional jet market and lower aftermarket sales on the Bombardier CL-415 program were partially offset by higher sales to the large commercial aircraft market, mainly from new actuator business on the B-777 program. Sales to the military aerospace market rose 28.0% to C$53.2m mainly driven by a C$7.8m two-month contribution from APPH. On an internal basis, military sales increased 9.2% due to higher spare parts requirements on the P-3 and C-130 programs and favourable currency fluctuations. Gross profit reached C$15.4m, or 16.9% of sales, up from C$12.0m, or 16.3% of sales, last year. Adjusted net income from continuing operations, which excludes acquisition-related costs and restructuring charges, net of taxes, stood at C$6.0m in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, versus C$4.6m in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2014, consolidated sales from continuing operations reached C$272.0m, up 5.8% from C$257.0m in fiscal 2013. Gross profit amounted toC $42.4m, or 15.6% of sales, up from C$39.8m, or 15.5% of sales, in fiscal 2013 reflecting the addition of APPH. Excluding acquisition-related costs of C$5.0m and restructuring charges of C$1.9m, ad-justed EBITDA from continuing operations stood at C$35.8m, or 13.2% of sales, in fiscal 2014, compared with C$33.0m, or 12.8% of sales, a year earlier. Adjusted net income from continuing operations totalled C$15.3m versus C$13.4m in the prior year.

cal innovation, acquisitions and further de-velopment of the aftermarket base. Already a strong solutions partner in the European OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) ro-tary wing sector where its noise, vibration and motion control technologies are integral to a number of major helicopter programmes, the LORD aerospace strategy for Europe seeks to support the demand for risk sharing innova-tors in the commercial fixed wing supply chain. LORD Corporation already collaborates with major European Aerospace leaders, includ-ing Airbus Group, SAFRAN Group, Finmec-canica Group, Dassault, Pilatus, and SAAB. The product range for fixed wing platforms includes engine attachment systems, passive and active motion and vibration control, noise mitigation solutions, and specialty chemicals such as lightning strike protection for com-posite aircraft. A key element of this strategy is a European acquisition programme to add resources, technologies and capabilities to the LORD Corporation offering. Following this year’s acquisition of New York-based Stellar Technology, Inc. and Vermont-based MicroS-train two years earlier, European acquisitions are being actively pursued in the low to mid-cap size bracket to provide further platforms delivering new customer solutions.

Monarch Aircraft Engineering Training Academy, the UK-based training centre has extensive capability to deliver full EASA Part-147 B1 and B2 approved type train-ing for a variety of aircraft including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and is one of only eight independent Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) organisations worldwide ac-credited to provide training for this aircraft type. MAETA’s state-of-the-art training facility has a well equipped learning centre with spa-cious classrooms, together with student study areas, access to online libraries and IT facilities and importantly, the ability tospend real time on aircraft at Monarch Aircraft Engineering’s hangar facilities thus enabling students to build up practical and theoretical knowledge. The training can be provided at any of its UK locations or overseas.
