The littlest Lexus may becomethe biggest seller.
The HS 250h is a compact, two-mode hybrid sedan capable of 35mpg around town and 34 on thehighway. Pricing starts at a $35,075and can push nearly $50,000 withoptions for the Premium model,today’s test car.
Lexus has had limited successwith some of its hybrids, the GS450h, LS 600h and RX 450h, thelatter of which has been the mostpopular of the group. The debatefor consumers is price and that thecompany’s standard models arejust so efficient that absorbing theadded cost of a hybrid doesn’tmake economic sense.
The HS will be different becauseit is a right-sized car, roomier insome aspects than the ES 350sedan ($35,675) and it is like driv-ing the future. It is greenery withoutthe hype.
It feels perfectly normal to beable to drive on complete batterypower or to hit the Power switchand kick up the acceleration. Andwhen there is no rush, the Ecomode rewards with maximum fuelefficiency and lower emissions.
This is not the traditional driver’scar and it cannot be consideredsporty to drive. But for adherents ofhyper-miling, it is engaging to applythe various modes to slow themovement of the fuel gauge andease the beat of emissions-pump-ing cylinders.
Cautious drivers will keep an eyeon the efficiency meter to maximizeeconomy; they will learn to use thebraking mode to recapture engine-braking energy; and, of course,they will take it easy on takeoffs.
And a majority of other userscould care less.
It is enough for them to knowthat they are getting good mileage,no matter how they drive. With a14.5-gallon tank, the cruising rangeis considerable.
The HS is not a remake of theToyota Prius. The HS 250h issourced from a unique platform inJapan that uses a powertrainbased on that in the Camry hybrid.Its fuel economy of 35 mpg cityand 34 highway is a tick better thanthe Camry, but significantly off the51 mpg city for the Prius.
The 3,770-pound HS Premium
weighs 700 pounds more thanPrius. And it outpowers Prius with187 horses from the engine andelectric motors.
But it still drives like the newPrius and feels much like it inside,which is more luxurious than a typi-cal Toyota. The HS appears to beless posh than a typical Lexus andmore functional in its materials.
The Lexus effect is in the stan-dard equipment, which includesleather-trimmed seats, a 10-waypower driver seat, eight-way powerfront passenger seat, moonroof,10-speaker audio system and 10air bags, including front knee bags.
Compared with Prius, the LexusHS is 9 inches longer, 1.5 incheswider and a half-inch taller. But bythe numbers, the Prius has moreinterior room, back-seat legroom andtrunk space. Still, the HS has a flatfloor in the second row and adultseating in all three bench positions.
As easy as this car is to drive, amouse-like controller to access var-ious cabin functions was so touchsensitive it was tedious to master. Icould only practice while the carwas stopped, otherwise I’d fixateon the screen to make my handmove the cursor to the desiredarea. And it didn’t get easier afterseven days of working with it. Theowner will do much better with atutorial at the dealership.
It seemed out of place to have amechanical parking brake in suchan icon of electronic efficiency. Andfor my eyes, the electrochromicside mirrors were too dark at night.
The HS is a new direction forLexus. It isn’t a pampering productbut an upscale statement of func-tion and efficiency. It doesn’tscream look at me, I’m driving agreen car. And a lot of people maybe ready to be a little more subtlein their approach to saving theplanet.
