To start….Parked bicycles which obstruct the pavement for pedestrians, prams and wheelchairs are a growing problem just as overfull bicycle racks which make it difficult to find a space and equally difficult to find anddifficult to find a space and equally difficult to find and retrieve the own bicycle.

Dimensions, design as well as localisation of public , g pbike parking in dense cities are emerging topics in the discussion of forerunner cycling cities.

P i t bik ki i t l t f th i tPrivate bike parking is at least of the same importance, but the possibilities to improve this important aspect directly by the local authorities are more limited.

Based on a legal foundation and in the context of the proceeding on the granting of a construction permit it is necessary to establish the realisation of good bike parking facilities as a standard infrastructure“ for everyparking facilities as a „standard infrastructure for every new or renovated building.

Actual SituationBasel shows a significant deficit in quantity as well as quality of private bike parking. Due to the restricted space, public bike parking is not able to compensate these deficits and remains not much more than anto compensate these deficits and remains not much more than an additional offer. The Canton wants to cover the increasing demand of bike parking caused by private facilities.Basel currently wants to improve building legislation in order to stimulate private bicycle parking in cases of new building andstimulate private bicycle parking in cases of new building and renovation works with aspects of quantity - according to the specific use e.g working sites, shopping areas, residential buildings, school, service areas and quality (accessibility facilities)service areas - and quality (accessibility, facilities)
