The South Coastal Library, as we know it, could not exist without volunteers. If the library did not have our

wonderful core of dedicated, resourceful, and tireless volunteers, patrons would still be able to borrow books and use library resources, but these services would be available on a much limited basis. Without volunteers, when entering the building we might have to climb over a mountain of recently due books, videos, CD’s, and periodicals. The outdoor return book ‘chute’ would likely be spouting books and magazines like a smoldering volcano; returned books would languish on service carts waiting to be re-shelved, resembling a jumbled mess leftover from last weekend’s community yard sale. Books, if they eventually made it back to their Dewey-Decimal shelf homes, would resemble tomes arranged by a kindergartner experiencing a tantrum. The wonderful lectures, demonstrations, and musical performances on fascinating and timely topics we now experience at the facility could very well be replaced by “How-To” government film strips from the ‘50’s & ‘60’s.

I’m presenting a much-overstated scenario of course, but perhaps it’s not too far from the truth. I asked Library Director Sue Keefe what she thinks of the many terrific volunteers who help her and her staff cope with the demands of running the extremely busy South Coastal Library. “Our group of dedicated, hard-working, unsung volunteers helps us keep this facility running smoothly on a daily basis,” said Keefe. “Without them we would not be able to provide many of the services and programs that our library is known for,” she added. Director’s Report | Sue Keefe

Summer is ending, many of us have returned from vacation with a tan, tales of the fish that got away, and—at least in my case—a medium pile of books and bookmarkers. Some of us bring back key chains. Librarians bring back bookmarkers. Which means you have to get at least 3 books so you can put the bookmarkers to use. I know there will be little will power in a bookstore. But do not fret—you can have as little will power as you want in the library. We’ll even give you baskets so

you can tote your selected treasures to the check-out desk. (We’re helpful like that.) Given that there were many days this summer when we worked with over 100 people/hour, we know you like coming here. Thank you for that!

And what enticements do we have in store for you for the fall season? Check the list below for new events and classes, provided to you free through the courtesy of those amazing fund-raisers, the Friends of the South Coastal Library, and donations from library-lovers.

• History talks like “A Soldier’sLife in the Civil War” by Tyler Magliola and “The Battles ofthe American Revolution” byDr. Gudelunas.

• The Celtic Harp, Flute & Cello concert returns, as does David Zipse’s piano concert (he’s “doing” the Beatles this time).

• Enjoy interesting books and authors (we think that’s why you come here) at the Happy Booker’s book discussion groups and “The Angel of the Odd: Edgar Allan Poe” with Kara Russell.

• Brush up on your art technique with the DE Watercolor Society.

• Bloom with our flower arranging class by Catherine Schultz; sparkle in our jewelry classes; be creative in Pam’s Craft Clubs.

• Chef Charles Oppman returns with “Food Fight” and cooking classes. (You know how good the library smells during those programs, don’t you?)

Some programs require pre-registration, as space is limited. You can pick up brochures at the library or go to southcoastal.lib.de.us. Upcoming events are posted on the home page, or click on Full Calendar for more listings. You can call the library at 302-539-5231 and also email questions to [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you this fall!

the event proceeds without a hitch and raises much-needed funds for our library patron activities.

Another group of dedicated folks who offer their time for a worthy cause are the 90+ FOSCL volunteers who set up and run the Annual FOSCL Book Sale. This tireless group, under the leadership of Co-Chairs Lois Rubinsohn and Esther Samios and Book Sale Committee members Fran Markowski, Audrey Young, Theo Loppatto, and Pamela Richmond spends four days each year in August making sure tourists

and local bibliophiles find that ‘special’ or rare book or books. This annual community event raises additional dollars that greatly supplement programs for the library.

The next time you’re browsing the recesses of the SCL shelves looking for the perfect read for a Fall afternoon on the beach and come across that tome right where your computer search said it would be, thank a South Coastal volunteer. You’ll recognize her/him by the beatific smile and the marvelous can-do attitude.

To volunteer your services or to find out more about offering your talents to the library stop by the Circulation Desk and pick up a volunteer application. Fill it out, and the library’s Volunteer Coordinator will review the application and contact you for an interview.

Help us to continue to keep The South Coastal Library Sussex County’s Number One Community Asset!

All The Best,Norbert

NEWARK, DEL. – Governor John Carney on Wednesday signed into law House Bill 94 and House Bill 34, legislation that will allow Delaware libraries to further their efforts to coordinate technology resources statewide and offer more educational opportunities to library and archives professionals.

“Delaware libraries have become centers for exploration and innovation – places where people from all walks of life can ignite their passions and unleash their potential. Technology is the lynchpin of the modern library, and I’m proud that libraries across our state are working in such close collaboration to bring those resources to the public,” said Governor Carney. “I’m also proud to continue to honor the legacy of a true champion for our libraries, Ada Leigh Soles, by extending the scholarship that bears her name to more eligible professionals in the library and archives fields.”

The two measures signed into law Wednesday at the Newark Free Library include House Bill 94, which codifies the state Division of Libraries’ responsibility to administer the Delaware Library Consortium. Launched in 2010, this statewide network of libraries has partnered together to improve the quality and accessibility of technological resources available at libraries. The consortium’s efforts include the development of a statewide digital library catalog and the expansion of high-speed broadband internet access to all public libraries, as well as coordinated purchasing of computer hardware and a centralized tech help desk.

House Bill 34, also signed Wednesday, expands the availability of the Ada Leigh Soles Memorial Professional Librarian and Archivist Incentive Scholarship Program to include employees of non-public libraries in Delaware that join the consortium. Established in 2010 as a tribute to the late Newark legislator and tireless advocate for libraries, the Ada Leigh Soles award provides financial assistance to students who work for Delaware libraries and the Delaware Public Archives.

Both measures were approved earlier this year by the General Assembly with unanimous support. Newark-area legislators Representative Paul Baumbach and Senator David Sokola led the effort to pass the bills. The Division of Libraries, which oversees the consortium, is an agency of the Delaware Department of State.

“Our library system enables countless residents to study, learn, and find work. We are extremely appreciative of the Department of State’s support for technology in libraries across Delaware, including the many libraries in New Castle County,” said County Executive Matt Meyer. “The statewide library consortium formalized through this legislation will provide residents with equal access to the information they need to conduct their daily lives.”

“The Delaware Library Consortium now enables libraries to ‘crowdsource’ community services through a growing network of partner agencies and nonprofits,” said Dr. Annie Norman, State Librarian and Director of the Division of Libraries. “Under the leadership of Gov. Carney, we look forward to maximizing these services on behalf of library patrons across the state.”

Summer Book Sale 2017 Another Successful Sale| Lois Rubinsohn

There were hundreds of customers for opening day for the Friends of the South Coastal Library (FOSCL) summer book sale. With the exceptional help of many volunteers and the support of the community donating and purchasing books, $4,940.00 was raised to assist with South Coastal Library programs. Outgoing book sale chairperson, Lois Rubinsohn would like to thank Dick Fox and his logistical team for service over the years. Kudo’s also to the current book sale committee members for their timeless effort and support: Esther Samios, Audrey Young, Fran Markowski, Pamela Richman, and Theo Loppatto. I would like to welcome to Esther Samios the incoming chairperson, who has done such great work as the co-chair this year. Remember, the library accepts books for the sale throughout the year.

Staffer’s Pick: A Different Kind of Entertainment | Rachel Fierstein-Noguera

Thanks to a generous patron, the South Coastal Library was able to have a small number of glasses for the solar eclipse on August 21st! Some of the glasses were handed out in the morning, and the rest kept for use at the library during that afternoon. We also live-streamed the event in the cultural center. Between noon and 3pm, staffers stayed out front and let all who were coming in use the glasses to check out the solar eclipse. Everyone shared glasses and all were excited and happy. It was hard to tell who was happier—the kids seeing the eclipse or the parents who thought their children wouldn’t see the eclipse because they couldn’t find glasses.

As summer winds down to a halt and the dark cloud of winter looms overhead, you might find yourself asking, “What will I do now?” You could check out another Patterson novel, re-watch The Office for the hundredth time, or you could try something entirely new.

Enter the world of anime and manga. Though both are associated with traditional cartoons and comics, anime and manga differ in that their content contains more emotional depth. Themes such as death, suffering, social injustices, satire, and war are explored in a way which is accessible to all ages.

Looking for a place to start? Look no further than South Coastal Library. Our collection of anime and manga are scattered across the teen room, foreign language, adult, and family DVDs. We have some popular titles such as Ghost in the Shell, Attack on Titan, RWBY, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Princess Mononoke. So, the next time you’re in the library looking for something new or wanting to revisit an old title, check out our collection at South Coastal Library! If you need help trying to find a new title, ask me! Anime is a favorite of mine! (Sandy can recommend any BBC episode and I can help you with anime.)

The 26th Annual Beach & Bay Cottage Tour held on July 26 and 27 this year was another sellout. This year’s 10 fabulous homes were all within a 13-mile radius, making it convenient for those who chose to bike the tour. Each home was amazing, and we are so grateful to the homeowners for sharing their homes with us.

A sellout crowd of 2,184 tour attendees enjoyed visiting the 10 homes, with a total of 17,566 home visits over the two days of the tour. The final figures are not complete, but the tour should net approximately $77,000 for the Friends of the South Coastal Library (FOSCL) to support the programs of the South Coastal Library. We extend a special thank you for the efforts of the Cottage Tour Committee again led by Chair Kathy Green and Co-chair Carol Brigleb.

• The homeowners who so generously opened their lovely homes to our tour attendees - Tracy and Clint Heiden; Lisa and Tom Kloster; Mike and Kathy McCord; Maria and Mark Madigan; Janine and Wing Eng; Judy and Carey Verger; Janet Maher and Dan Hiett; Marnie Oursler; Jodi Macklin, Daryle Bobb, and Tammy Mendelson (and Sandy and Stanley Bobb); and Judith and Daniel Deutsch.

• The tote bag sponsors - Anne Powell + Associates, G & E/ Hockers, PNC Bank, Sea Colony Recreation Association, The Cottage Café Restaurant and Pub and Bethany Boathouse, and The Town of Bethany Beach for enabling us to present each ticket purchaser with the 2017 market tote bag. Hopefully, you will use it often and remember and support those who made it possible.

» Those who solicited and visited our advertisers for the ads which assist in underwriting the costs of the tour.

» Those who sold and handed out tour tickets and bags at the community room at the library.

» Those who rolled 2,000+ booties to protect the floors of those gorgeous homes.

» Those who collected mail orders, processed ticket orders, maintained the beachandbaycottagetour.com website, and completed all the banking and accounting for the tour.

» Those who organized, bartended, and helped with parking at the lovely cocktail party to honor our homeowners.

» Those who wrote and proofread the booklet home descriptions and provided publicity for the Facebook Tour Page and local newspapers, the tour brochure, and the Connection.

• Our graphic artist, printers, and florist who produced outstanding products related to this year’s tour.

• Our local newspapers, the Coastal Point and the Wave, for providing us with great publicity for the tour.
