FAO. (In English) In a new study, published in The International Forestry Review by FAO REDD+ researchers, global deforestation patterns were explored through location analysis. Findings suggest that rural population density and agricultural expansion seem to remain the first drivers of deforestation, in relation to both historical and recent deforestation. (In English) An expert meeting in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire at the end of October called for more investment and a scaling up of the Great Green Wall Programme in Africa. The GGW is the main sustainable rural development programme in Africa, and must be strengthened to better help local population combat more severe droughts and desertification triggered by climate change. (In French) With 44 percent of Kosovo’s territory covered with forests, the country’s forestry sector shows great potential as a development opportunity for rural people. A new FAO report highlights the fact that much still needs to be done to better recognize women’s role in the management of this important national resource. (In English) A new FAO publication Sustainable woodfuel for food security. A smart choice: green, renewable and affordable aims to present woodfuel that has been produced in a sustainable way as an energy source that remains important to helping people in developing countries emerge from food insecurity and local rural poverty, and improve their livelihoods. (+ factsheet in English) This news and much more in this new issue of Infosylva. Enjoy your reading!
