NO. 19 SEMINOLES FACE USF IN METRO BY T-MOBILE ORANGE BOWL CLASSIC Florida State, which has won two consecutive and nine of its last 10 games, travels to play USF in the Metro by T-Mobile Orange Bowl Classic on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. The Seminoles will face USF for the first time since December 20, 2014 in a game also played in the Orange Bowl Classic. Florida State’s game against the Bulls marks the eighth consecutive season it will play in the Orange Bowl Classic. The Seminoles enter Saturday’s game against the Bulls with two consecutive victories including a 98-81 win over North Florida on Tuesday night in Tallahassee. FLORIDA STATE IN THE LAST TWO SEASONS Florida State is 38-10 (.792 winning percentage) since the beginning of the 2018-19 season entering Saturday’s game against USF. The Seminoles won a school-record 29 games with a 29-8 record (.784 winning percentage) and an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance in 2019 and are 9-2 (.818 winning percentage) in the first 11 games of the 2019-20 season. SEMINOLES TO HONOR NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE AGAINST USF The Florida State men's basketball team will wear turquoise Nike N7 uniforms against USF in Saturday’s game to raise awareness for bringing sport to Native American and Aboriginal youth. It marks the 14th time (and second time this season) the Seminoles will wear the special uniforms. The Seminoles wore the special uniforms in their 80-65 win over Saint Francis in Tallahassee on November 23, 2019. This season (2019-20) marks the seventh consecutive season the Seminoles will wear the turquoise uniforms. Florida State makes a distinct departure from its traditional school colors to don turquoise Nike N7 uniforms to stand for the importance of bringing sport and physical activity to Native American and Aboriginal youth. SEMINOLES SHOOT WELL FROM THE FIELD IN VICTORY OVER NORTH FLORIDA Florida State, which is ranked fourth in the ACC with a team field goal shooting percentage of .468, shot .569 from the field in its win over North Florida on Tuesday night in Tallahassee. It marked the third time this season the Seminoles had shot better than .520 from the field in a single game. The Seminoles’ top three field goal shooting days have produced their top three scoring games with 113 points coming in their win over Chicago State (113-56, November 25), 98 coming in their win over North Florida (98-81, December 17) and 89 points coming against Chattanooga (89-53, November 20). When the Seminoles shoot over 50 percent from the field this season, they average 100 points scored per game (300 total points in three games). TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s exhibition opener provided a glimpse of what lies ahead for the Seminoles – both in the upcoming season and beyond. It also showed coach Leonard Hamilton a few things he’d like for his team to tighten up between now and the Seminoles’ season opener on November 6. So, in that sense, it was a near-perfect evening for FSU, which got 19 points and five assists from senior Trent Forrest in a 95-66 victory over Barry University at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Forrest, the central figure for an FSU team that lost its top two scorers from a year ago, was one of six Seminoles to finish in double-figures. Anthony Polite added 18 – including 16 in the second half – while RaiQuan Gray (10 points) and newcomers Patrick Williams (12, nine rebounds), Nathanael Jack (10), Dominik Olejniczak (10 points, seven rebounds) and Malik Osborne (seven points, seven boards) all enjoyed productive outings.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – - In its final exhibition game before regular season play begins at Pittsburgh, Florida State earned an 84-54 victory over Columbus State at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Sophomore Devin Vassell led three Seminoles in double figures with 18 points. Also in double figures were Anthony Polite with 16 points and freshman Patrick Williams with 10. The game saw some familiar faces returning to the court after missing Florida State’s exhibition victory over Barry. Both M.J. Walker and Devin Vassell made their highly anticipated season debuts and came back with a vengeance. Walker, who started and played nine first half minutes, totaled six points on two made 3-point shots. Vassell totaled 18 points (three-of-three three-pointers) and finished with six rebounds.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Devin Vassell scored 13 points, M.J. Walker added 12 and Florida State upset No. 6 Florida 63-51 on Sunday, extending its series winning streak to six. The Seminoles (1-1) avoided their first 0-2 start since 2000 thanks to suffocating defense that forced the rival Gators (1-1) into 16 turnovers and a woeful shooting performance. Florida was 14 of 50 from the field, including 4 of 22 from 3-point range. A sellout crowd witnessed FSU take over late in the first half and really seize control after the break. The Gators went 10 minutes with just one field goal -- a dunk on an inbound play -- as Florida State pulled ahead 38-25 in the opening minutes of the second half. The ‘Noles went up by 14 on Anthony Polite’s 3-pointer with 9:31 to play. The Seminoles made 11 of their first 20 shots in the second half. They also finished with five blocked shots and eight steals.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman Patrick Williams and junior M.J. Walker each scored 18 points and Florida State rallied to top Western Carolina 79-74 in the Seminoles’ home opener. Forrest had 16 points for the Seminoles who trailed 41-24 with 3:41 left before halftime. Florida State gradually chipped away at the lead, going ahead for good with 45 seconds left in the second half as Williams made a layup. Mason Faulkner scored 21 points, including 12 in the first half, as WCU took a commanding early lead. The Catamounts made 7 of 14 3-pointers in the first half but cooled off and was just 2 of 9 in the second half. After Williams made a pair of free throws to give Florida State a 77-74 lead, Faulkner missed a long jumper with three seconds left as he hoped to make the shot and draw the foul in an attempt to tie it up and send the game to overtime. Florida State won its home opener, securing a 33rd straight nonconference victory at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Wyatt Wilkes scored a career-high 14 points while Trent Forrest added 13 points and five re-bounds as Florida State defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) 80-65. A redshirt sophomore, Wilkes had scored just five points in four games this season before turning in an unexpected five of seven performance from the floor against the Red Flash. Wilkes also knocked down 3-of-5 3-pointers. Myles Thompson scored a career-high 23 points, knocking down 9 of 12 shots for Saint Francis. Thompson came into the game averaging eight points. Forrest was 7 of 7 at the free-throw line as the Seminoles continued to impress by going 15 of 17 at the charity stripe. Florida State came into the game as the only ACC team shooting better than 75 percent from the free-throw line. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Devin Vassell and Patrick Williams scored 16 points apiece as Florida State had its best shoot-ing night of the year in a 113-56 win over Chicago State. Nathanael Jack added 14 points for the Seminoles, who shot 73.3% in the first half as they took a 65-29 lead at the break. Andrew Lewis scored 18 points for Chicago State (3-4). Trent Forrest scored 12 points for Florida State, which finished 38 of 58 (65.5%) from the floor. Balsa Koprivica and RaiQuan Gray each had seven rebounds for Florida State, which won the rebounding battle 43-20. This was the first time the Seminoles scored 100 points in regulation since a 113-78 win over The Citadel on Nov. 24, 2017. Twelve Semi-noles scored points in one of the more dominating victories in school history. Florida State’s 57-point margin of victory was just outside the top five in school history.

Florida State, winning its sixth straight game, moved to 6-1 and will play Purdue for the championship. Guard Lamonte Turner scored a game-high 20 points for Ten-nessee which its suffered its first loss of the season falling to 5-1. Tennessee committed a season-high 21 turnovers with Florida State scoring 23 points off those miscues. Sophomore guard Devin Vassell led Florida State with 13 points, while MJ Walker collected 10 points. NICEVILLE, Fla. – Trent Forrest scored 17 points to lead Florida State to a 63-60 overtime victory over Purdue in the Emerald Coast Classic championship game. The Seminoles outscored the Boilermakers 5-2 in the extra period by getting their points at the free-throw line including the final two with only one second left to play. Purdue, trailing by only a point, took several potentially winning shots in the last minute but was unable to score against a stifling Florida State defense.Devin Vassell was the only other Seminole scoring in double figures with 13 points. That included the final two free throws in overtime after getting fouled when he grabbed a missed Purdue shot. Matt Haarms led the Boilermakers with 16 points followed by Jahaad Proctor with 12 and Eric Hunter Jr. with 10. It was a back-and-forth game with 10 lead changes and 11 ties. Florida State never led by more than four points while the Boilermakers briefly went ahead by seven early in the second half after trailing 27-24 at the intermission.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Devonte Green senior scored a career-high 30 points, knocked down five 3-pointers and helped fuel a late spurt with two big shots to lead undefeated Indiana past No. 17 Florida State 80-64 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Green went 10 of 15 from the field, 5 of 7 on 3s and 5 for 7 at the free throw line. He also grabbed six rebounds and finished with three assists and two steals -- not bad for someone who missed Indiana’s first three games with an injured hamstring. With Green back, the Hoosiers are off to their best start since 2012-13. They earned their third straight win over a ranked team dating to last season and head into Big Ten play with a boost of confidence. It wasn’t just Green, either. Freshman forward Trayce Jackson-Davis had 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior Justin Smith chipped in with 14 points and five boards. FSU Basketball Star Trent Forrest Set To Graduate After 3 ½ Years By Corey Clark Warchant December 12, 2019 Trent Forrest has scored 905 points in his Florida State career. He has pulled down 464 rebounds, dished out 370 assists, collected 181 steals and been a part of 86 wins, three NCAA Tournaments, two Sweet 16s and one Elite Eight. And yet the number his family might be most proud of is 3.5. That's the number of years it's taken the Chipley, Fla., native to earn his bachelor's degree in sports management from Florida State. The Seminoles' senior guard will walk across the Tucker Center stage and accept his diploma on Friday night. It's the same building where he has he produced so many memorable moments since arriving in Tallahassee in 2016. The beautiful passes and breathtaking drives to the basket. The suffocating defense and dominating victories. Yet this moment might go down as the most special of them all for his parents, Barbara Lee and Lester Forrest. "(They're) very proud," Trent Forrest said. "Sometimes more proud of that than anything I do on the court. Because they stress to me that that's one thing that somebody will never be able to take from you is your education. So for my family, they're very proud of me graduating and all the academic awards I've received." Forrest, who has been on the All-ACC Academic Honor roll each of the last three years, was able to graduate ahead of schedule at FSU because he took college-level courses during his time at Chipley High School, where he graduated with a 4.3 GPA. Now, after graduating with a degree in sports management, he will enroll in the Florida State master's program in the same field, saying he wants to one day be a coach or NBA general manager. When Forrest arrived in Tallahassee, he had no way of knowing how his career would pan out. He was hoping, of course, to play in a few NCAA Tournaments. He was likely hoping to maybe even leave school early to pursue his NBA dreams. Forrest, after all, did score over 3,000 points in high school and was considered one of the best point guards in the nation. So it wasn't outrageous for him to hope -- or even expect -- to leave college before his eligibility was up. Instead, he's a senior leader trying to earn a fourth straight NCAA Tournament berth before pursuing his professional career. But he always knew that no matter what happened on the hardwood, he'd be getting his degree from Florida State University. This has been the plan all along. And it was one of the main reasons he signed with Leonard Hamilton and the Seminoles in the first place. "That's kind of what won my parents over," Forrest said. "His graduation rate is ridiculously high. It definitely won them over. It was definitely a no-brainer for them. Even if I didn't stay all four years, they knew I'd get my degree." Well, he's stayed all four years. He just didn't need them all to graduate. So when the Seminoles take the court again on Tuesday night, he won't be Florida State senior guard Trent Forrest anymore.

‘I Got To Wear My Kicks’: RaiQuan Gray And The Seminoles Size Up Their Shoe Collections By Tashan Reed The Athletic December 4, 2019 Florida State redshirt sophomore forward RaiQuan Gray believes he’s the biggest sneakerhead on the team. The 6-foot-8, 260-pounder carries himself with the same confidence while stating that’s a fact as he does when he’s pushing the ball up the court or launching a 3-pointer. That’s no small claim for a basketball roster that includes 17 players. Most of them have plenty of basketball and casual shoes at their disposal between their time with the team and their own personal accumulation of kicks over the years. In Gray’s mind, junior forward M.J. Walker is a close second. He’s versatile. He has classics like Nike’s Air Force 1s and Retro Air Jordans, but also has more modern brands and models. Freshman forward Patrick Williams is a rising newcomer. Like Walker, he boasts a strong collection of Jordans, but he doesn’t have enough experience yet. Redshirt sophomore guard Anthony Polite, who’s from Lugano, Switzerland, is more into European designer shoes. His favorite designer is Giuseppe Zanotti, who’s Italian. He agreed that Gray has a strong sneaker game, but disagreed with the ranking. “He might be one of the top guys… With me,” Polite said while standing near the door in the press conference room at the Civic Center after his team’s 79-74 win over Western Carolina. “I’d put me at No. 1; him at No. 2.” Senior guard Trent Forrest has been in Tallahassee longer than anyone else on the squad. Unsurprisingly, he has a ton of shoes, but Gray said he doesn’t really wear them very often. Forrest rejected that point and clarified that while he mostly wears comfortable shoes because he’s often just chilling when he’s not playing basketball, he has some heat in his closet. Not only that, but he emphatically declined to put Gray at No. 1. “No chance, not even close,” Forrest said. “I would put myself, definitely.” Forrest said his closet has “flavors,” which is code for versatile. If he’s feeling casual, he’ll just throw on some Vans. If he’s walking around campus, you might catch him in some Jordan 11s (his favorite is a tie between the “Cool Grey” and “Concord” colorways). If he’s going out, he might put on some an Off-White collaboration. When Forrest stepped off the team bus to play in the home opener against Western Carolina on Nov. 15, he was wearing some Adidas Yeezys. To Forrest, that diversity is what sets him apart. “He got a lot of variety, too, though,” Forrest says of Gray. “He got a lot of (Jordan) 1s and different ones, too. I’m first, but he’s definitely second, though, for sure.” The reason why Gray thinks his collection takes first place is that it has the best mix of quality, versatility and exclusivity. He’s not just some hoarder who collects the shoes to post pictures on social media and brag about them to his friends but never actually wears them, either. He’s emphatic in that he’s all in on the culture. “Nah, I wear mine,” Gray says while sitting courtside following a public Florida State scrimmage in October. “I wear my kicks. I can’t do that. I got to wear my kicks. “I got to.”

Gray was relatively late to the sneaker game. He didn’t really start getting into shoes until his senior year of high school. Before then, he mostly wore running and training shoes or whatever kicks came with the time he spent playing on the Under Armour basketball circuit. Sure, he got some Jordan Melos that he liked back in middle school, but his collection was admittedly pretty weak. When his sister bought him a few more pairs of J’s while he was a senior in high school approaching graduation, however, he got hooked. Gray estimates that he owns 20-25 pairs of Jordans alone. On top of that, he has several shoes from several other brands and around 25 pairs of basketball shoes. “I got like 22 at home for sure… Nah, like 23-24 at home for sure,” Gray says. “Then basketball, I would say here (at the Civic Center) I got like five and then in our practice facility probably like 15-16.” Without a doubt, Jordan is Gray’s favorite brand. He enjoys the Jordan 1s, 4s and 11s. His favorite colorway is either the Jordan 11 “Bred” or Jordan 11 “Concord,” but the 1s are his top silhouette. “Any 1,” Gray says. “Any Jordan 1, I’ll wear. If the color looks good to me, I’ll wear it. I like 1s. I can have a whole closet of 1s and I’ll be fine. So, the 1s, any color.” Gray will often opt for something more comfortable when going to class or if he’s just relaxing. Besides his Jordans, he goes to the Nike Air Monarchs the most. “It depends,” Gray says. “If it’s a chill day, I’ll probably throw on some trainers. I got the Air Monarchs, I like those. Those feel good. Then any ‘J,’ I’ll just throw ’em on. I just put ’em on and go to class. That’s about it.” The most treasured basketball shoe that Gray owns is the LeBron 16 “I’m King.” The feel is ideal for someone of his size, which isn’t surprising given they’re designed for the 6-foot-8, 250-pound LeBron James, and he likes the black and gold colorway. His favorite casual shoe is the Jordan 1 “Turbo Green.” Gray stores his shoes at home along the bottom of his closet. The shoes that he only pulls out for special occasions are kept in their boxes and stacked on top of each other in two rows. The day-to-day shoes are kept in a large bin. His stockpiles at the Civic Center and Basketball Training Center weren’t nearly as organized, so Florida State assistant Stan Jones made him give some of the shoes away. “I just gave like seven pairs away,” Gray says. “Coach Jones made me give ’em away. I had too many shoes in my locker at the top and he was like, ‘I cleaned it out.'” Gray couldn’t rely on his sister to buy his shoes forever. The first pair of shoes that he bought with his own money were the Jordan 1 “Top 3” during his senior year of high school. Eventually, Gray sold them, but he wound up buying them for a second time. “Ohh,” Gray says as he leans back in his chair and rests his hands on the top of his head when asked about the most expensive pair of shoes he’s ever purchased. “The most money? Probably like $400. I had two pair of Top 3 1s. The ones in high school were $350, but I ended up selling ’em and I wanted ’em back, so I bought ’em for like $400.” Were they really worth the extra $50? “Yeah,” Gray says. “I wanted ’em back.” Even Forrest — who’s probably the player with the best argument to contend with Gray — hasn’t gone past $250. He spent that on a pair of Jordan 12 “Flu Game” shoes off of Flight Club, which is an authenticated store that resells sneakers.

Part of the price gap is shoe size. Forrest wears a 14, while Gray wears a size 16. That sounds subtle, but it makes a huge difference when it comes to finding rare shoes at a reasonable price on the resale market. “It is (tough on him),” Forrest says. “But, I don’t know, somehow he be getting them.” Finding the shoes alone in his size exceedingly difficult. Getting them at a reasonable price is almost impossible. He almost has to get a pair he wants as soon as they come out if he wants to avoid breaking the bank. “Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Gray says, his disappointment with his conundrum apparent. “It’s a lot. It’s hard to find the exclusive shoes. I’ll just hit somebody up and they’ll try to hold a pair for me.” Gray typically buys a new pair of shoes every month. At least every other month. Some Jordans can be found for around $100, but the nicer pairs that Gray enjoys often exceed $200, $300 or even $400 in retail price. “Oh, I’m definitely trying to get the UNDEFEATED x Nike Kobe 4 Protros, the “Black Mamba” ones that just came out,” Gray says. “I want to play in those this year. Then Jordans, some “Shattered Backboards” (1s) or, I don’t know what they’re called, the orange and green (SoleFly Art Basel Sail) 1s. Either one of those.” Gray is superstitious about his shoes when it comes to basketball. If he plays well in a pair of shoes one game, he’ll keep wearing it. As soon as he plays bad, though, he’ll switch it out for another. Last season, he said his best shoe was a pair of the Nike Kobe “A.D.” He customized them using the Nike I.D. service. They were all gray with gold chrome on the heel and the Nike check on the side. He wore them for the first time in the Seminoles’ 80-75 overtime win over Louisville on Feb 9. He played in them for the rest of the season. To make sure he’s prepared if something feels off, Gray brings at least three shoes with him to every game. “I’ll shoot in a pair for home games and then switch before (the game),” Gray says. “Last year, I played in a shoe, then before that in the shootaround, I wore a shoe and then I shot before the game in a shoe. It depends on how I’m feeling in them, really.” The equipment managers always pack shoes whenever FSU goes on the road, but Gray also brings a backpack that has two more pairs of shoes in it. “Because I don’t want to wear the team shoe to the gym and then getting back on the plane, I do that,” Gray explains. “Then they bring a shoe bag for our team and I’ll steal somebody’s spot and just bring like three pair of basketball shoes. It depends on how I’m feeling.” Even during the scrimmage, Gray couldn’t be caught lacking when it came to his sneaker game. He wore a pair of the Nike KD 11 “Still KD”. They’re black and gray with a light blue, translucent outsole. His spot as the biggest sneakerhead on the team is solid — for now — but it’s still close enough to spark debates within the team. “Me and M.J.,” Gray says when asked of the primary competitors. “Actually, Pat, too. He tries to count my shoes and stuff like that. I feel like they’re trying to say that I got the most shoes on the team, but I don’t believe it. I think those two people are definitely up there with me.” For now, no one on the team quite matches Gray. Well, almost. There’s a student manager for the team who has so many shoes that he has to split them between his apartment in Tallahassee and his home in Georgia. Gray mentions him in passing, initially, but he realizes that even he can’t compete as he describes the collection. “That’s who you should be talking to,” Gray jokes as he walks away and heads in the direction of the locker room. Gray has some catching up to do.
