You may be aware of news reports this week of children being exposed to inappropriate materials online through social media accounts. As part of their privacy policies, social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube specify that users must be at least 13 years old. Parents may be unaware of this requirement. The minimum age stipulations are based on the requirements of the US Congress as set out in the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.1 The act specifies that website operators must gain verifiable parental consent prior to collecting any personal information from a child younger than 13 years old. Many social networking sites avoid this requirement by setting a minimum age of use at 13 years old but there is no onus on website operators to verify the age of users. While some parents allow their children to use social media, others do not, so we need to ensure that children at school dont have access to unsupervised internet access. Phones also have the ability to record video, audio and images of other students, and we have to ensure that no unauthorised recordings of students make their way to the internet. For these reasons we get children who bring mobile phones to school to hand them in to the office at the start of the school day. Recently, weve also seen that some children have started wearing smart watches to school. These are a great piece of kit, but as they have the same functionality as mobile phones, we will need children who wear them to school to hand them in to the office at the start of each day. Safety is also in the forefront of our minds while preparing for our Athletics Carnival next week. Unfortunately, current COVID-19 restrictions prevent us from having parents on site where we cant guarantee appropriate social distancing. This means that we are unable to have parents on site for large gatherings, such as our athletics carnival and assemblies, but you can make appointments to come and speak to myself or your childs teacher. I do understand that this is a big disappointment for our community (it is for us as well!), but we will make sure that the children have a great day, and well make sure we take lots of photos, so at least we can share the childrens experiences with you in some form. No. 12 10th September, 2020

From the Principal—Mr Jamie Feeney

This week, I’d like to talk a bit about children’s safety online. You may be aware of news reports this week of children being exposed to inappropriate materials online through social media accounts. As part of their privacy policies, social networking sites such as Facebook,

Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube specify that users must be at least 13 years old.

While some parents allow their children to use social media, others do not, so we need to ensure that children at school don’t have access to unsupervised internet access. Phones also have the ability to

record video, audio and images of other students, and we have to ensure that no unauthorised recordings of students make their way to the internet. For these reasons we get children who bring mobile phones to school to hand them in to the office at the start of the school day. Recently, we’ve also seen that some children have started wearing smart watches to school. These are a great piece of kit, but as they have the same functionality as mobile phones, we will need children who wear them to school to hand them in to the office at the start of each day.

Safety is also in the forefront of our minds while preparing for our Athletics Carnival next week. Unfortunately, current COVID-19 restrictions prevent us from having parents on site where we can’t guarantee appropriate social distancing. This means that we are unable to have parents on site for large gatherings, such as our athletics carnival and assemblies, but you can make appointments to come and speak to myself or your child’s teacher. I do understand that this is a big disappointment for our community (it is for us as well!), but we will make sure that the children have a great day, and we’ll make sure we take lots of photos, so at least we can share the children’s experiences with you in some form.

Jamie Feeney

Sports News We wish to congratulate the following students for their sporting achievements. From the left: Tanner, who represented Mackay District SS in hockey,

at the Capricornia trials in Rockhampton on Tuesday. He made the possible and probable trial, however was not selected in the Cap. Team.

Blake and Braith, both represented Mackay at the

Capricornia Softball trials recently. Both boys did very well.

Ramy, Tayah and Rosemary attended the Mackay

District girl’s cricket trials last week. The girls learned new skills and are keen to keep playing.

Brayden trialled in the boys cricket trials and was selected in the Mackay District School boys U12

cricket team. He will represent Mackay at the Capricornia trials early next term. On Wednesday, students from grades 5 and 6 combined with Beaconsfield students to play in the AFL Queensland School Cup Gala Day. Northview students played with the usual determination, even though we had little knowledge of the fine points of the game. The girls’ team proved quite strong, winning all games bar the final game. Our little athletes came away with a new respect for AFL and a desire to continue to play. Well done, Clarice, Takiyah, Veanna, Nyzell, Tanner, Joshua, Brayden, Blake and Isaac.

Sporting Schools This term students benefited from another Sporting School grant. Upper grade students asked for some extra Rugby League training. NRL development made weekly visits to school for 6 weeks.

Students also benefitted from extra track and field training and new cricket resources thanks to the Aus-tralian governments Sporting School Grants. We have applied for the next round of grants. Next term we are hoping to have grant money to have new sports like Taekwondo, Ten Pin Bowling and Table Tennis on offer. Stay tuned.

FROM OUR SCHOOL CHAPLAIN: Chappy Riki Schroeder. Ph: 0407 695 207

email: [email protected]

Hello Everyone, We’re nearly at the end of Term 3 and the COVID realities and challenges continue. Hope the Northview State School community has a relaxing and enjoyable break.

BREAKFAST CLUB: Breakfast Club is a free opportunity for Staff and Children to share breakfast together every Tuesday. It has been a happy time for us with the children being able to assist again now. Special thanks to Coles, Northern Beaches, Jenny at Northern Beaches Bakehouse, Margaret Golding, Lucinda Lawn, Hannah Rasmussen, Charlene Campbell, some of our parents, thank you to Travis Muscat and his family and Max Hoskin for your generous donations and to those people who donated anonymously. Thanks also to my volunteers, Dale Daniel, Gail Crosbie and Amanda Koina. You are all amazing. It would be impossible to provide this service to everyone without your donations and support. It is quite a workout for my Volunteers.

Please note that there will be no Breakfast Club in Week 10 and Term 4 Week 1.

If you would like to donate something to the Club please see the list of what we currently are in need of.

REQUEST FOR DONATIONS FOR BREAKFAST CLUB 2020: Can you help? Please donate an item or two to our Breakfast Club. We currently use at least 10 litres of milk per week and 12 loaves of bread and 1 raisin loaf! It is a challenge to feed so many children with the resources currently available to us.

The following items are currently needed.

New 4 slice Toasted Sandwich Maker.

Bottled Apple Juice

Vegemite.

Long Life Milk cartons.

Cereal – Nutrigrain.

Grated Tasty Cheese and ham for Toasties.

Nuttalex, Olive Oil Spread or Devondale Extra Soft.

Small plastic bowls for cereal and yoghurt. We can’t source any at present.

Money with which to buy fruit, yogurt and other supplies.

SOCIAL SKILLS AND FRIENDSHIP GROUPS: My role is to provide social, emotional and spiritual support to students, staff and parents in our school community. Am doing a lot of work with younger children building their friendship and social skills. Am also assisting children with various issues like anger, anxiety, family problems, behaviour problems and also provide some educational support.

GAMES AND CONVERSATION IN THE COURTARD:

About 20 to 25 children attend Games and Conversation in the Courtyard with Chappy Riki at second break on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Some of my games and kinetic sand are looking to need being replaced. Does anybody have an ‘Angry Birds’ game? I only have one angry bird left. The kids love this game but I think it is only available on eBay now. We could do with some new kinetic sand and a new fishing game too. Have a great week. Chappy Riki.
