Thursday 29 June saw Rotarians, Partners and guests arrive at The Jaipur Palace in Durban North for the annual Induction Dinner.

We were delighted to welcome District Governor Wally Jacobs and his delightful wife, Arlene.

Travelling all the way from Himeville was the Chairman of The Rotary Club of Durban North Satellite Club of Kw Sani, Ant Connolly and Dael.

There were numerous guests of Ann Bricknell and Charlie Panday and we were pleased to have Ricky Lodetti from M Projects who received the Durban North Wheel of Service Award.

Other awards made were Paul Harris Fellowships for Alma Maxwell and Vanessa Champion; Rotarian of the Year – Peter Coutts, Presidents Award – Carin Napier and the Stirrer of the Year – Louis Visagie

After the formalities, all tucked into a scrumptious selection of Curries.

It was indeed a great evening of celebration,

YEAR END WRAP UP by 2016-17 President Ann Bricknell

I know that I have said this many times before, but where has the time gone. It seems just

yesterday that I stood here being inducted has the Club President for this last Rotary year and the

year is now over ……. but as the saying goes ‘Time Flies when you are having fun’

When I took on my role as President of the Rotary Club of Durban North 2016 / 2017 it was with

much trepidation but thanks to all the club members for their wonderful support and the support of

all the Committee chairs, my year has been a very happy and enjoyable one.

Reflecting back, I believe we have had a pretty

successful year with the projects we have

supported, the fundraising we have achieved and

the fellowship we have enjoyed.

I think the highlight of the year would have to be,

with the incredible support and enormous

generosity of M Projects, the construction of the

two classrooms at The Bundle of Joy Crèche in

Inanda.

These two classrooms have made such a difference

to the lives of the little people the crèche looks after

every day and we have also in the last month

installed toilet facilities at the Creche.

We held our customary Christmas Party for the

Sherwood Home for the mentally challenged in

November last year a function that always brings

much joy to all concerned and we provided

Christmas biscuits for the elderly at TAFTA.

Our Fundraising Projects have also been very successful starting the Rotary year with a Walk

down memory lane and the ‘Walk of Fame’’ at the Barn Yard Theatre. Assisting with

registration of participants at the Amashova Cycle Race and honing our marshalling skills at the

East Coast Radio Big Walk. Then our recently held very successful Golf day, thanks to Peter

Coutts and Vanessa Champion.

We are also very pleased to have been the sponsor club and to have registered the Rotary Club of

Durban North Satellite Club Kwa Sani in Himeville in September last year with Ant Connolly as

Chairperson at the helm.

I am also very pleased to announce that we have been notified by our District Governor Bruce

Steel-Grey that our club has qualified this year for the DG's Citation which is a great achievement

for our club. To non-Rotarians this means that at the start of each Rotary Year the DG sets out

goals for all clubs within the District to meet during the year covering various aspects of Rotary.

So well done to our club and once again thank you, the members.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank each Board member for their support this past

year.

A Toast to South Africa by Alma Maxwell

On the occasion of the Induction of President Charlie Panday 29 June 2017:

Cry the beloved Country

Not tears of despair and frustration,

But tears of joy and appreciation.

Appreciate what, you may ask, as we see levels of corruption and crime soar

When we as Rotarians work with people who are destitute and poor.

When our economy is on its knees,

And racist opinions still get spoken with such ease.

And we are expected to be grateful? Oh please!

Stop. Stop and take time to look around you.

Wake up early and experience an African sunrise,

The red, yellow and orange colours so vibrant they hurt your eyes.

Walk or drive down any street,

Our abundant flora flourishes everywhere despite the African heat.

Venture out of your suburban surrounds,

And the infinite beauty of our treasured country abounds.

Witness a herd of wild animals thundering by,

Look up and appreciate our seemingly endless African sky.

But as remarkable as the natural attractions in our country are,

It’s our people that shine brighter than any star.

We are resilient, spirited and loyal no matter the cost,

That spirit of Ubuntu among us South Africans will never be lost.

May the tears you cry be because you know,

That your commitment to South Africa will continue to grow

May the tears you cry be because you understand

The love we Rotarians have for South Africa, Our land.

Club Happenings

Visit from Carin and Sine to Katsi Project in Clermont Carin and Sine arriving at the Old Age Home where Zipho Mkize is welcoming them. Zipho got permission to use the hall for her “Katsi Youth in Action” project. Carin and Sine are going to share their Food Safety Awareness talk. Students from America and Durban University of Technology have worked together on this topic, with the focus on crèches and the community at large. They also designed posters, which is nice for the children to look at.

Carin introducing Sine and herself to the youth and sharing a bit about the work they do with the students at the Department of Food and Nutrition at Durban University. And encouraging those who like to work with food to become a student at D.U.T. Those young boys listened attentively. The day we arrived was a public holiday, so there was quite an audience.

About 30 youngsters present to listen to the presentation about hygiene and Nutrition. Sine sharing the importance of hygiene and nutrition. After her talk, there were many questions asked and there was a lot of interaction with each other and also with Carin and Sine. Thank you both for your enthusiasm, commitment and your aspiration to bring the awareness into the communities and schools to raise healthy children.

Retarded Grandparents

After Christmas, young pupils were asked how they spent their holiday away from school.

Here are a few :

We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. They used to live in a big brick house but Grandpa got retarded and they moved to Batemans Bay in Florida where everyone lives in nice little houses where they don't have to mow the grass anymore!

They ride around on their bicycles and scooters and wear name tags because they don't know who they are anymore. They go to a building called a wreck center, but they must have got it fixed because it’s all okay now. They do exercises there, but they don't do them very well.

There is a swimming pool too, but they only jump up and down in it with hats on.

At their gate, there is a doll’s house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out, and go cruising in their golf carts!

Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat the same thing every night - early birds.

Some of the people can't get out past the man in the doll house. The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center for pot luck.

My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too.

When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll’s house. Then I will let people out, so they can visit their grandchildren.
