Investigating the water situation in Marapong, one thing became abundantly clear – many residents are afraid to speak up out out of fear of victimisation. One such resident claims that she does not have water for about two hours every day: “It is very difficult to live in these conditions,” she said, “sometimes we don't even have enough water to flush our toilets.”

Another resident of Extension 4 in Marapong says that he has been living in his house since 2009 and in that time he has never had any running water. “I have to go to the informal houses in Extension 1 if I want water,” he explained. “Sometimes I have to collect two 50 litre cans full of water a day.” Ludwig Masipa, also from Extension 4, says he hasn’t had water for almost eight years and has spoken to his ward councillor and the municipality about the problem in the past.

“Every five years the ANC and DA want to recruit members and then they come to our houses to talk to us, but we never receive any service despite all their promises,” Ludwig said. He adds that there are four people liv-ing in his house of which two are small chil-dren and when they need water to flush their toilet, bath, cook or even to drink, they have to take a wheelbarrow and collect water in containers from other areas in Marapong.

One elderly woman, Pauline Gupe, said that the problem is especially bad when it rains. She has to use a long-drop toilet and when it rains all the sewage pushes up to the top. She uses a big municipal rubbish can to collect water to use in the toilet and for cleaning; drinking water is collected on a daily basis in big containers.

The DA councillor living in the area,

Marapong: water crisis continuesMARAPONG – The right to water is embedded in constitutional law in South Africa, while article l.1 of the UN economic, social and cultural rights state that “the human right to water is indispensable for leading a life in human dignity.” So why then has life without access to water been a daily reality for the past eight years for some Marapong residents? Northern News reporter Amanda Basson investigates.

Stephen Manamela, said he is aware of the problem. “I have taken the matter up with the municipality in the past,” Manamela said, “It is unthinkable that people are still living in these conditions after so many years.”

The ANC councillor for the area, William Motlokwa, said the problem has been receiv-ing attention from the municipality. “We are in the process of erecting water containers in the area to assist the residents,” he said. “The municipality is focusing on getting a workable solution for the problem.”

Residents are, however, adamant that they don’t want water containers, they want running water. “We have formal houses with toilets and all the pipes are in working order. Why can’t we get running water?” Extension 4 resident, Hendrik Motshehoa, said asking why the municipality charges resident for wa-ter before it is connected: “How can I pay for something I never had?”

The water problem in Marapong is a big-ger issue than most people realise. One of the major issues standing in the way of Lep-halale’s development is the fact that there just isn’t enough water.

Bigger pictureLephalale was identified as a coal-mining

and petrochemical cluster by government and the area’s 2035 local economic develop-ment plan includes growing the number of power stations from one to possibly five and the amount of coal mined from 16-million tons to 100-million tons. The area boasts 40% of SA’s coal reserves and the town’s population has exploded due to the construc-tion of Eskom’s Medupi plant.

According to a question asked in parlia-

ment, published in the National Assembly Internal Question Paper No. 5, on 6 March 2014, the minister of water and sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, indicated that water will be transferred from the Crocodile river west to Lephalale and that the water needs and entitlements of users, including farmers in the Crocodile river west catchment have been fully accounted for in assessing the availability of water for transfer and that the funding has been obtained to start with the the pipeline for transfer.

The municipality has already engaged several stake holders as well as the depart-ment of co-operative governance, human set-tlements and traditional affairs (Coghsta) and the department of water and sanitation to secure funding for the project. As an interme-diate solution the Lephalale municipality will work on in collaboration with the department of water and sanitation to drill five boreholes in the area.

Municipality respondsAccording to Lephalale municipality, an

investigation into the shortage of water sup-ply in Marapong found the demand for water is much higher than previously anticipated.

The area is overpopulated as more that 80% of the houses are doubling as rental facilities, housing 15 or more people in a house suited for 4-6 people. It is also esti-mated that only 16% of water users pay their accounts on a regular basis. Illegal connec-tions also make it difficult for the municipal-ity to establish water needs in the area. The

demand is so great that reservoirs continu-ously run dry. The municipality is calling on residents to use water sparingly, while they are working to find a solution to this pressing issue.

Residents in Extension 4 live further away from the water reservoirs and are sometimes without water while residents in Extension 1, who live closer to the reservoirs, have water. This is a logistical concern. The municipality believe that the installation of water tanks will contribute positively to addressing the situation.

The municipality has also appointed a service provider who will erect the 22 x 10 000L water tanks, following a decision by council to mitigate water challenges in Marapong. They will meet with councillors to identify the areas where the water tanks will be erected this week and the contractor will be on site the following week. These tanks will regularly be refilled with potable water.

All informal settlements in the Marapong vicinity (around 7 000 people) will benefit from this new system according to the mu-nicipality.

One of the major issues standing in the way of Lephalale’s development is the fact that there just isn’t enough water.

MOKOPANE - The police in Mokopane is investigating an early morning burglary at George's Café last Thursday.

The owners say culprits threw bricks at the front window, broke the glass and climbed through to get inside the café.

The suspects repeatedly threw bricks at the window within a time frame of two to three hours to get the window to break. Once

Burglars target George'sit did, they comfortably helped themselves to cigarettes and other stock on the shelves as video footage inside the café confirmed.

“Although it could have been worse, it’s frustrating, because not only are the dam-ages to our stock impacting on us, but also the down-time caused by the investigation,” said one of the cafe’s owners. "I am fed-up with crime in South Africa."

The owners are hopeful the video footage will help police to apprehend the thieves.

LEPHALALE – On Tuesday workers at the Medupi plant were frustrated when they drove into a police barricade on their way to work.

According to reports the street leading to the Medupi plant was cordoned off after workers were denied access to the site by striking members who were using their pri-vate vehicles to weave through traffic and intimidate workers on their way to the site.

The strike has begun to take its toll on most of the workers and the no-work-no-pay

Families suffer because of Medupi strikesystem has left many families in dire straits with churches and welfare organisations stepping in to provide food and other necessi-ties to the affected people.

“I am at my wits-end, we are living on the goodwill of other people at the moment,” one lady who did not want to be named said.

Her sentiments are shared by many oth-ers who are also starting to feel the pinch in an already strained economy. One person living at the Medupi hostels said that the people who are on strike are few but they are well resourced and armed.

“If you stay with them in a hostel you

know you can’t go against anything they say” he said.

According to the Eskom spokesman Khulu Phasiwe only about 2 000 workers reported for duty compared to the normal 14 000 workforce.

Many workers claim that they would pre-fer to go back to work but are scared of being intimidated or attacked by their colleagues who are striking.

Medupi and Kusile plants were expected to be completed by 2021 but that date might be reviewed again as a result of the continu-ing strike.

Plaasaanval: suksesvolle arrestasieAmanda Basson ([email protected])

Twee skote is afgevuur.

Police official in shooting dramaTAFELKOP – The long weekend ended in tragedy for two innocent victims and the police official who allegedly took their lives.

Last Saturday, a police constable and his girlfriend were apparently hitch-hiking on the Tafelkop road when a driver who passed gave them a lift. W/O Frans Mokoena of the Lephalale SAPS says investigations show that they asked the driver to stop.

The couple left a bag in the vehicle and the driver must have turned around to hand it back to them when he probably saw the constable shooting his 27-year-old girlfriend four times in the upper body. The constable turned the gun on the driver and shot him in the head. Both victims passed away on the scene.

The shooter then allegedly took the ve-hicle and drove a short distance down the Vaalwater gravel road where he took his own life. The police constable used his service firearm during the incident.

Horrific car crashLEPHALALE – A double-trailer truck was on its way to Medupi last Friday at about 12:30 when it collided with a bakkie on the corner of Nelson Mandela and Rupert streets. According to W/O Frans Mokoena eyewitnesses said that the bakkie was driving over the crossing when the truck approached. The truck tried to swerve, but drove over the bakkie. According to reports the driver of the bakkie is in a stable condition at a local hospital.

As SA’s power crisis deepens, businesses and households are opting to beat power cuts by acquiring back-up and renewable energy solutions – from generators through to sophisticated solar photovoltaic (PV) and inverter solutions. But as with any industry that sees sudden demand, criminals have not missed the opportunity to cash in by selling stolen property to consumers looking to save a quick buck.

Generators are being stolen out of gar-dens and solar panels are disappearing off rooftops. “It’s essential that homeowners check that their sum insured is sufficient to cover the replacement of the building along with any new fixtures and fittings,” says Mandy Barrett of insurance brokerage and risk advisors, Aon South Africa.

It is essential to keep your insurance cov-ers up to date, especially when additions are made to your home or property. “Additional home improvements will either increase your homeowners insurance, or will increase your household contents replacement value, depending on whether the improvement is a fixed feature or a portable solution like a generator. Check with your insurer whether the sum that you are insured for adequately covers any home additions. If you are unsure, engage the services of a professional broker who is equipped to guide you through the

Criminals target generators and solar panels

process and ensure that you are not left out of pocket,” urges Mandy.

Any addition of an alternative energy so-lution to your home will most likely require the assistance of an electrician. “You may open yourself up to problems that could arise out of using dubious electrical contractors, if you don’t know what to look out for.

“Make sure the people you use are repu-table service providers who are bona fide members of their respective representative organisations, such as being a member of the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA),” says Mandy.

Taking appropriate security measures to safeguard your investment against would-be criminals is advised. “A generator should be chained or housed within a lockable metal cage,” says Mandy. “Ensure that your secu-rity gates and electric fencing are always in working order, and arm your property alarm when you leave the premises. In this regard, outdoor, pet-friendly alarm sensors are a great addition to your security measures, and will pick up any unwelcome visitors before they have a chance to get inside.”

Taking precautionary steps to safeguard your power generation solutions against criminals is recommended, as is speaking to your broker to ensure you have the correct covers in place.

LEPHALALE – The alleged involvement of Zimbabwean citizens in violent attacks in this area has sparked serious conflict be-tween the farmers, the community and the foreign nationals.

According to reports the serious attack on Michael Beukes and his wife who was resid-ing in the Vaalwater area, was instigated by a Zimbabwean national. In another attack a man was killed in the Lephalale area when he tried to stop a domestic dispute between a Zimbabwean citizen and his South African girlfriend. These incidents have caused a frenzy on social media networks with many South Africans, including AfriForum, calling for the legislation that allow Zimbabweans to work in South Africa for 90 days without a visa, to be recalled.

Although most people are opposed to the xenophobic attacks ravaging the coun-try lately, employers have been cautioned against employing Zimbabweans without ensuring that they have the proper documen-tation. “Farmers should not be tempted to let somebody provide cheap labour without taking proper precautions to ensure that the worker is legally in the country,” one farmer warned. One resident in Marapong

The Zimbabwean labour issuetold Northern News: “We have many foreign nationals in our community who are not working they come to SA looking for work, but we don’t even have enough work for our own people.”

The government together with several big organisations and individuals have widely condemned all attacks on foreign nationals in this country.

“Not all people who come from Zimba-bwe are violent,” one Zimbabwean who did not want to be named said. She is living in a one room shack in Marapong which she shares with her South African boyfriend and her three children.

“Our country (Zimbabwe) is very poor and people are desperate to get work and provide food for our children,” she said “Most Zimbabweans want to live in peace with our neighbours in South Africa. We do not want to go back to Zimbabwe.”

In an effort to ensure that foreign nation-als feel welcome in SA the communications Minister Faith Muthambi embarked on an outreach programme on Friday 24 April at Musina and the Beit Bridge border post en-titled “We are all Africans”. This programme was seen as a great success by the govern-ment and was aimed at creating positive for-eign relations with other African nations.

MOKOPANE – Employees of MBD took time last week to add their voices to the call against xenophobia that has engulfed SA.

The employees of the company took to the streets with placards and chanting: “We Say No!”. They urged passing motorists and passers-by to hoot and shout out against the recent xenophobic attacks.

She trains leaders around the world.

Learning curve

By Minda Marshall

In our previous discussion, we looked at the importance of internal structure. What we are building into our children through our daily interaction with them is very impor-tant.

Raising our children in this day and age is challenging. We are not sure about tomor-row’s economic environment, or what will happen at the end of next week. Our lives are changing all the time. The American Depart-ment of Futureworks estimates that 65% of today's school kids will end up at jobs that haven’t been created yet. This means our children will be doing jobs that do not even exist today. This is why people all over the globe are asking questions about the future of education. Are we really busy teaching our children what is needed for a better future?

Howard Gardner, Ph.D., defined "Five Minds for the Future" which are mental skills that will be very important in the years ahead. The way we raise our children can give them a platform to develop these skills and other important characteristics and set them up for a successful life! Let’s take a look at these five minds.

A disciplined mind has developed a deep ongoing understanding of a specific area by mastering an important subject. This could

be anything from carpentry to a deep under-standing of history. So find out what interests your child. Start to develop these interests, it could become their future. This mind has self-control and wants to become an expert in a specific subject. Use every opportunity to teach your child to have ‘stickability’. Don’t allow him/her to quit halfway. Learn to finish every assignment.

The combining mind can understand and evaluate information from different sources and can make meaningful associations while avoiding false or fruitless ones. Teach your child to stay out of unfruitful discussions, for instance, don’t get stuck in the past. Find ways of becoming better so that the future will be better. Sport is an area that is very well suited to training our children for this. If your child loses a competition, stop blaming the referee or the coach (in order to make the child feel better), or anybody else for that matter. Teach your child to take responsibil-ity. Look at the options, decide together how to do it better the next time. This mind can create, produce, integrate, combine, and find new answers to old problems!

The solution mind formulates valuable new ideas and perspectives and innovates new things. Give your child opportunity to ‘think outside the box’. Create an environ-ment at home where they are allowed to find

Equip your children with mental skillsnew ways of doing things. This mind is used to invent, think of new things, and start new ways of doing things.

The respectful mind has knowledge of and respect for diverse cultures. We live in a world that is becoming smaller and smaller – as well as in a country with many diverse cultures and ideas.

Teach your child how to respect, value and esteem other people who are different from us. Being different gives us opportuni-ties to find new ways of doing things! If we can look at each other without thinking the one is better than the other, we can begin to build a better future together.

The ethical mind acts as a 'good citizen' in difficult situations. Teach your child to be open-minded. It is important that we con-sider what would be beneficial for all. How can we structure our lives in order to take our family, community, town and even country forward? This means we take up our respon-sibility to live lives that will be beneficial to those around us and stop thinking of myself first.

So ask yourself… How do I create oppor-tunities for my child to grow in these areas through my choices? Remember the most fertile soil for growth is not always high in the mountains, but below in the valleys. If your child can go through a challenging time with

you beside him/her to encourage and assist him/her in developing a positive mind-set, a willing attitude, and a breakthrough mental-ity, you have won a war, and set your child on the pathway of success. As parents we are creating the future through the way we raise our children!

developing people. Her goal is for the learn-ers to achieve great success and more specifically for them to enjoy every moment thereof. Northern News visited the learners at the municipal swimming pool while still at their very first stages of training. An exited group, from 14-years and older faced the icy wind and eagerly awaited further instruction from Welding. A fun hour training session fol-lowed under the watchful eye of a life saver.

Welding’s passion for the sport began in her adult years as she started competing in the well known Midmar Mile and later also taking part in distance swimming at Ebene-zer Dam. She completed the latter twice.

“It is so rewarding to see these swimmers developing, regardless the pace. And know-ing that you are a part of the reason why they develop is even more rewarding,“ says Welding.

How does one define a BIG bass? To some a big bass will weigh anything from 2kg up, whereas others consider a big bass 4kg+.

To me a BIG bass is relative. It depends where you are fishing and what the average size of the resident bass are. For example, if you are fishing for bass in Zimbabwe, Bo-tswana, KwaZulu-Natal, or any other warm regions notorious for producing large bass, a 2kg fish would be considered average. How-ever, if you are fishing in Gauteng, Freestate or other cooler highveld regions, a 2kg+ bass would be considered big.

Personally? If the bass is large enough to get your juices flowing...it is a large bass. It doesn’t matter whether it is a 2kg bass or a 5kg monster.

Big bass are wily candidates and you need a good strategy if you want to consis-tently catch them. There are several factors to consider when targeting big fish. Add these together and your chances of catching big bass increase.

HabitatBig fish do not move around much.

Their age and experience has taught them the most ideal location for their survival,

Fishing with Christie

Hunting big Bassand they will stay in this area.

What is ideal ‘territory’ for big bass? Any area that can provide plenty of food, oxygen (moving water or aquatic plant life), cover and easy access to deep water, feeding flats and spawning areas

ForageIt is important to determine the predomi-

nant fodder for bass (species of bait fish, crustacean, or a combination of both) in the water you are fishing. In SA, forage would most likely consist of any of the tilapia or bream species, barbs (ghieliemientjie), carp (fry), crabs and freshwater invertebrates / crustaceans.

Big bass do not like to waste energy chasing down food. They will live in an area where food is abundant and where cover can be used for ambush.

TackleOnce you have determined the main spe-

cies of forage, use this knowledge to select your lures. ‘Match the hatch’ – a term often used by fly fishermen, is my number one guide to selecting lures when targeting big bass. What time of the year is it? Spring / early summer when bait fish are recently hatched and relatively small, or late summer

/ autumn when bait have had a whole season to grow into a decent size? Select your lure size and colour to match this season’s hatchlings.

Big bass often live in areas seldom targeted by fishermen because they are too difficult to fish and heavy with cover. You will need a stout rod and reel (heavy action), good qual-ity line and hooks. Check your line / hooks often whilst fishing. Frayed line = lost fish. Hooks bent open = bad hookset. Tro-phy bass often only give you one chance for a good solid hookset. Don’t waste it.

PreparationTake the time to study your

target, the water you will be fishing and look for the right areas to fish. Do not waste time thrashing water. Learn to look at big water with a small water mind-set. Break down a large body of water into small areas, and fish each area as though it is a small pond. Determine where the feeding flats are, break lines, migration routes and deep water. Look for areas that = food + cover + escape route (deep water).

Mind-SetTrophy bass anglers don't often catch a

lot of small to medium sized fish because these are not the fish they are hunting. This

is a quantity vs. quality situation. If you still get high on catching 50-60 bass a day then chances are trophy fishing is not your style yet. Hunting big bass may mean that you will only catch a couple of fish for the day, but those fish will be quality fish. Get your mind-set right before setting out on this quest.
