In a world that is both increasingly interconnected yet polarized, we need global citizens invested in the common good. At NMH, you will learn to appreciate the variations that exist among individuals and within communities. Alongside students from diverse cultures and countries, you will exchange ideas and conceive ways to make the world economically balanced, environmentally healthy, and committed to peace.

One of the classes I’ve taken this
fall is the sophomore Diversity
and Social Justice seminar. It’s designed
not only to make you consider the many
aspects of diversity and multiculturalism
in our society, but also to increase your
awareness of your own identity. I think
both of those goals are reinforced by
what I do outside of the classroom at
NMH. I’m a member of the Circle of
Sisters, an affinity group for young
women of color that raised a lot of
money for the local food pantry this year.
This past summer, I increased my
awareness of my identity in a big way.
I reconnected with my native country,
Ethiopia. I worked in an orphanage,
and it was very powerful. It felt
like an entirely new experience and
like home at the same time.
Born in Ethiopia, Mitike came to the U.S. 10 years ago. An excellent student, a varsity runner, and a member of the choir, Mitike has thrived at NMH.

When I was looking at boarding
schools, I was attracted to NMH
for a number of reasons. The CMAP
schedule made a big difference. I’m the
kind of person who really likes to focus
in-depth. Also, I play the tabla (Indian
drums), and NMH has an incredible world
music program. Perhaps most important
is the emphasis here on globalization.
That’s really expanded my view of things.
I’ve taken a school trip to China to
study language and now I’m going to
Qatar with Model UN. As head of the
World Music Combo, I’ve learned about
percussion instruments from Korea,
Africa, and Latin America, and have come
to see that there are commonalities and
differences among them. What’s so cool at
NMH is that there are so many different
mindsets, methodologies, and perspec-
tives here. They’re all explored through
writing, through music, through art, and
they form this unique amalgamation that
becomes a body of knowledge.

Hannah, who is heading to Middlebury College, meets challenges head-on. When her father became ill, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work.
I started the Cancer Team at school.
Almost 70 students are involved
and participate in local cancer walks,
on-campus fundraising, and general
cancer-awareness programs. Then I had
this idea to start a coffee bar on campus,
with the proceeds going to charity. Our
directors of Service Learning and Dining
Services were amazing. They helped me
plan out the whole thing and write my
business plan. Now the café is set to open
in this perfect spot in the library.
Even more, I was inspired to dream
big, and drew on that inspiration this year
when I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Kenya
in support of the Norris Cotton Cancer
Center. The fact that I had to raise $5,000
in order to do this was a mountain in
itself, but the can-do spirit at NMH
prepared me for the experience of a
lifetime. It didn’t hurt either that being
on NMH’s Nordic ski team meant I was
in shape for the climb!
