Prez Sez...ALBUQUERQUEThis is my first Brushstrokes column as the new president of the NMWS. I’ve been a member for about six years, and it became apparent to me almost immediately after I joined that the heart and soul (and driving engine) of this organization are the large number of dedicated volunteers who perform the various tasks required to make this a successful enterprise. A big ‘Thank You’ to those of you who served in key positions last year, and an especially big ‘Thank You’ to those of you who have volunteered to continue in your volunteer positions for the new term. You knew what you were getting into, and you stayed with it anyway!

During the past six years I’ve only viewed the workings of the leadership of NMWS from afar, so at the beginning of my term I will be trying to find out how things actually work. (“I must find out where they are going, because I am their leader!”) Things seem to be working well, so I don’t expect to be presiding over any big changes, but if you have any concerns or suggestions please let me know.

Keep on painting!

Jim TerryNMWS President2015-2016

SOUTHERN CHAPTER The new NMWS-SC Board, 2015 – 2016, met on a July 28th morning 2015 to plan the coming year’s budget . It met in a clubhouse on Conway in Mesilla Park, Las Cruces. Morning refreshments of coffee, tea, water, pastries and a “Friendship Fruit Salad” that was created by each member bringing a cup of fresh fruit were served. This was first introduced by Janey Walch a few years ago and has continued to be a tradition served at the first Board/Budget Meeting of the year. It signifies that if we all put in some fruit (work) we will end up with a beautiful bowl of fruit (a wonderful cohesive organization). The Board spent several hours and came up with what we feel is a good budget and it was approved. Each of the Committees know the amounts in their budgets and they are very good at staying within them. I want to thank all of the Board Members for the time and work that they have put into this. The “Awards” Committee is a new commitment we have agreed to make this year. Every year, the Southern Chapter will be giving one monetary award to each of two universities – NMSU and WNMU - to encourage a chosen student in his/her education in watercolor. Hopefully, we plan to raise this amount each year and we encourage you, the membership, to support this effort. We have already agreed to donating the Southern Chapter’s amount of the 50/50 to the Awards program. Any and all donations will be accepted by Lu Bleveans, the Chair of this committee or can be made to the Treasurer, Sue Ann Glenn. The October program will be given this year by Las Cruces artist, Dave Sorensen, and entitled “How to Paint Water.” November’s program will be El Paso artist, Julie Cafee Cruz doing a program entitled, “Taking It To Another Level.” Please come and join us and let’s get a good start on this new year of painting!

New Members LuncheonOur new members were welcomed at a luncheon hosted by Tina and Mike Stallard at their stunning home and yard in Cor-rales on Sunday August 30. A beautiful location, wonderful weather, delightful company and great food provided by the board members were enjoyed by the attendees, which included approximately 10 new members (and a few of their spouses) of the 55 members who have joined since June 2014. WELCOME to all of you, and any others that were unable to attend! (and thanks to Woody Duncan for the photos!)

THE MOST USEFUL ADVICEShared from the ArtistsNetwork.com blog posts with permission. James Gurney is famous for painting realistic images of subjects that aren’t real themselves. You may know Gurney from his groundbreaking book, Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter, and his Dinotopia series. He publishes a daily blog, free to subscribe: http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com

James Gurney’s BLAST Rules for Painting1. Use the Biggest brush possible for a given passage.2. Paint Large shapes first, followed by small shapes.3. Save your tonal and chromatic Accents until the last.4. Try to Soften any edge that doesn’t need to be sharp.5. Take Time to get the center of interest right.

PaintoutsAlbuquerqueWe will meet at 10am on Saturday, October 10 at Poblanos Fields Open Space on Montano east of Rio Grande and west of 4th. There is a sign by the entrance and a big parking lot once you drive in: Enter parking lot from westbound Montano. Jay Leutwyler recommended this space. He says it’s a nice scene to paint. Better bring water though I’d be surprised if there is none. I can put a gallon jug in my car to share. I also do not know about toilet facilities. There are a couple of tables with shade. We seem to paint for no more than two hours so plan on that. Lunch afterwards is always an option. You can get an idea of this place by going to https://www.cabq.gov/parksandrecreation/parks/prescription-trails/87107/los-poblanos-open-space. Call or email Karin with any questions, especially if the weather on the 10th might not be pleasant. She would love to know if you plan to attend. Keep an eye out for balloons!Karin Cook 856-1685 (home) or 227-3426 (cell on the 10th of October) [email protected]

Request for School Supplies

NMWS member Martha Calhoun was just hired by Albuquerque Public Schools as a part time art teacher for Taft Middle school. They have a tiny federal grant for the arts. The school is providing a permanent classroom, computer with their best projection equipment and very limited art supplies: cheap construction paper, #2 pencils and a bin of broken crayons.Martha is hoping that NMWS members have old supplies they would be willing to donate to the kids: pads of paper you didn’t like after all, palettes that didn’t work out, old brushes, tape, old mats, watercolors, gouache paints, and any kind of craft material: silk flowers, beads and beading supplies, styrofoam shapes, giftwrap paper or any patterned papers, ribbons, bottlecaps, scrapbooking supplies, rubber stamps, leatherworking tools, and things like pencil cups, cutting mats, rags, buckets, aprons. Basically, the group is starting from scratch. If you can contribute, you can drop things off at the Unitarian Church Friday painting group (see page 8), or contact Martha to make other arrangements: email: [email protected] or txt her at 505-933-4374.

BY OCTOBER 12 FOR INCLUSION IN THE NOVEMBER ISSUE OF BRUSHSTROKES!

A suggestion has been made that Brushstrokes include a classified ads section: if you have materials or equipment that you no longer want and don’t want to donate (e.g., to the Taft Middle School arts program, see page 5), that would have value to someone else, you could list them with a price and your contact information and someone who wanted them could contact you. This would be limited to person-to person exchanges, no commercial advertisements. Is anyone interested in this opportunity? If so, contact Jinkle.

October NMWS Volunteer StarMary Jane Milz

Mary Jane recently became active in NMWS, but has already been volunteering to help with the name tag distribution and hanging the JCC Alternative Spaces show. She says: “Don’t be afraid to volunteer: it’s very uplifting. I moved to ABQ. and I am slowly getting my feet wet. My 2 art groups are awesome-beautiful supportive people- creative nudges abound. The painting was done in Chinle where there are incredible canyons. I was sitting on the edge looking north to black rock. I was the first white woman in a Navajo gallery-EYAH.”

From the Permanent CollectionThe Permanent Collection is Yours to Enjoy

Most of the readers probably know that NMWS has a large (and gorgeous) collection of paintings by prominent artists. Most have been donated, many by past jurors and workshop instructors, some by past NMWS presidents.Images of many of the paintings in the permanent collection can be viewed at the NMWS website:http://www.nmwatercolorsociety.org/images_perm_coll

“Calle de Colima ” is one of 6 paintings in the Permanent Collection by Milford Zornes (January 25, 1908 – February 24, 2008). The painting is 31x38”. He was well known for his paintings of Western scenes. HIs style typifies the “California Movement.” His paintings are displayed in many prominent museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the White House, and the Library of Congress Collection. AND in our very own NMWS Permanent Collection!

THANKS MARY JANE! WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS!

NMWS Paper SalesAnd speaking of Volunteers, in Albuquerque, as always, call (505) 296-0273 or e-mail [email protected] ahead for your paper requests or to inquire about prices. Since they do not bring all the paper to every meeting, please request your paper order PRIOR to the next meeting, so they’ll bring your requested supply. Sheets of 300 lb. paper are now $10 each and the cost of 140 lb. paper will remain at $5 a sheet. New from the Southern Chapter: THANKS to Beth Welter for volunteering! She has Arches CP 140# ($5 per sheet) and 300# ($12 per sheet) watercolor paper for sale. Contact her at 575-652-3270 or [email protected], and she will bring the paper to you at the October meeting. Ten members joined tour Permanant Collection manager Karin Cook to tour this remarkable resource on Friday Sept 24th at its home in the REDW building. It took over 90 minutes to view the whole collection, but it was worth every minute. If you have never seen the whole collection, you may wish to consider taking the next opportunity to do so.

“Autumn is the year’s last, loveliest smile” (William Cullen Bryant), a time of year when artists are inspired to capture that flaming loveliness, and hold it within a frame against winter’s chill blues and grays. This time of year New Mexico’s cottonwoods and aspens shed their chlorophyll coats to wow us with their bright underwear. It’s a blast of analogous color that spans red to green on the color wheel. Bright blue skies frame the trees in the perfect complement to oranges and warm yellows while the dark trunks and limbs anchor the exhuberant crown of leaves providing contrast with calming neutrals. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the variety of color and texture in the trees, but with some planning you can bring order and harmony to this exhuberant display. In the color wheel below and you’ll see that the colors described above fit at three corners of a square tetradic color palette. The purple square is the tetradic pointer, Q= Quinacri-done and colors are Daniel Smith.

In the painting progression below the view from under a cottonwood canopy looking upward toward the backlit foliage shows the full range of color from neutrals to pale yellows. I’ve simulated some of the tiny light flares that occur as light shoots between leaves with fingertip rubouts that add action. Give it a try. Winter is coming, but you can capture Fall’s warmth before it gets away!

Kathy Gaither

Tips ‘n Trix

The hues in this tetrad are red-orange, yellow-green, cyan (or cool blue) and red-violet. At the lower right point is the sky color; lower left is for dark values on trunks and limbs; from upper left across to upper right captures leaf colors; and mixing the complements orange and blue will give you a neutral mix that can be warmed or cooled for the base color in trunk and limbs.

You can expand the color range harmoniously by including neutralized versions of the basic hues such as Napthamide Maroon, Quinacridone Burnt Orange, Quinacridone Gold and Burnt Sienna. You will also remain harmonious by moving between red and yellow to pick up analogous colors

“San Lorenzo Contrasts”

Spotlight: Georgette GreyI have been painting seriously since 1987, although I have been creating art in one form or another nearly all my life. When I was in art school I detested painting; the world was about line and contrast and my concentration was on printmaking. When my husband and I moved to California I had no job and no vehicle. Once we were unpacked and settled in I turned on the television and discovered “The Magic of Watercolor Painting” on PBS, with Tom Lynch. The next day, I had my 10-year-old paints, paper and brushes ready and waiting. That was a life-altering experience and I have been in love with watercolor ever since. My subject matter has changed along the way, as I have lived in or visited new places. I have realized, over the years, that light, texture, and contrast are what attracts me to an image and I have an abundance of that living in New Mexico; now I work to recreate or put my own spin on that.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE ARE ABOUT

• The New Mexico Watercolor Society was founded in 1969 as a statewide chapter of the Southwestern Watercolor Society of Dallas, TX. In January 1970, the New Mexico Watercolor Society became an independent entity with 501(c)(3) status.

THE PURPOSE OF THE SOCIETY IS THE ELEVATION OF THE STATURE OF WATERCOLOR AS AN ART MEDIUM AND THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC AS TO THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WATERCOLOR AS

AN IMPORTANT CREATIVE, PERMANENT PAINTING MEDIUM. THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO MAKE NEW MEXICO KNOWN NATIONALLY FOR ITS WATERCOLORISTS.

• Signature status is attained when a member has been accepted in five NMWS juried shows with a maximum of two pieces accepted per year. The initials “NMWS” can then be used with the member’s signature.

• The New Mexico Watercolor Society is a member of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies (WFWS).
