allied health professionals who work in a
variety of disciplines and settings, to
administer certification examinations in
accordance with the highest standards of
accreditation, and to provide continuing
education, information, advocacy services
and other benefits to our AMT members.

We just finished our spring meeting and I am quite
pleased with the results. I would like to thank the
members who were able to attend because there were
changes made to the meeting date because our meet-
ing was originally scheduled for the Saturday before
Easter. This was going to cause members not to at-
tend.
We were fortunate to have our District Councillor at
our meeting. Our Councillor’s presentation on Leader-
ship and Professionalism was very enlightening along
with the other presenters. We are truly grateful for the
time and effort they put into their topics.
I have news to pass on concerning our previous editor.
I have received a call from Henry Oh that has moved
from the state and that he has resigned as editor. At
this time he is somewhere in California. I would per-
sonally like to thank him for the years of service to our
state society as a past president, editor and a mentor to
me. As a parting gift, Henry was selected as Editor of
the Year by AMT and the journal was awarded first
place. He will be greatly missed. Henry’s parting left a
vacancy as editor. We are very fortunate to have a new
member to our state society that has experience in the
publication area. Gretchen Tupa has moved from Ari-
zona to New Mexico. She was editor for the Arizona
state society and graciously accepted to become our
editor. Ourstate society is truly blessed.
During the board meeting our Standard Operating Pro-
cedure were not voted on. There are some changes
coming the AMT Home Office and with our moving
over to the AMT Banking System there are several
revisions that need to be done to our current SOP.
These changes will be made and a revised SOP will be
presented during the fall meeting for voting.
I would like to thank Brown Mackie College espe-
cially Jim Cheslek JD, Dean of Academic Affairs, and
Eric Rudie, Campus President for their continued sup-
port of our state society and for use of their facilities.

Some dates to remember. The 2014 National Conven-
tion July 6-11; the fall meeting October 18, 2014 and
the 2015 National Convention June 22-25 in Hawaii.
I ask all members to review their copy of the AMT
Events magazine. There are articles and information
that all members will be interested in.
I ask all members when renewing their membership to
supply their contact information including their e-mail
address. This is one of the ways that our state society
can pass information about upcoming events of interest.
Our fall meeting is tentatively scheduled for October
18, 2014 at Brown Mackie College. Hope to see you
then.

Hello New Mexico,
I was indeed sorry to hear that Henry Oh has left our great
state. He did a great job in the state publication. I hope that I
can do have as well as he has done in the past. You will be
seeing some changes in the publication however.
I have recently moved to Farmington, NM from Mesa, AZ. I
hope to be sticking around for quite some time to come. I
am not much of a writer, so I will be asking NOW for all of
your HELP with obtaining articles for our publication. It is
after all a STATE publication, not a me publication. Any
thoughts, ideas or suggestions, actually just about any type of
input at all will be greatly appreciated.
I enjoyed my first New Mexico State Meeting. It was kind of
our state president Virgil Marchand and his me spend the
night with them instead of in a hotel. wife to let THANK
you both Judy and Virgil. I met some lovely people and
missed seeing some that I have know for years. I hope to see
many of you at our National Convention., If you have never
gone, PLEASE consider going. It is a wonderful experience
for all.

AMT Western District Councillor’s Spring 2014 Message Greetings and Welcome to Spring!
The AMT Council held our Spring meeting March 6 – 8 in Savannah, Georgia. It was a very busy and productive time. When we put the final wraps on the meeting I think we were all tired and, at the same time, excited about all the positive developments for AMT. There are several things that came out of the meeting that I need to share with you. First and foremost is to remind you that 2014 is the 75th anniversary year for AMT. To celebrate this milestone in our history we will be holding our an-nual meeting in the same city and hotel that saw the birth of AMT in 1939. We will gather at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, Illinois on July 6 – 11 for a grand celebration. During our time in Chicago you will have opportunity to visit our national office. There will be special arranged trips for a nominal cost of only $25 which will cover transportation and a box lunch. We have been asked to alert you that the Drake Hotel does not own the parking garage at-tached to their facility so they are not able to give us a discount on parking. The cost is $65 per day to park in the hotel garage. Efforts are being made to find discounted parking near the hotel. If you are fly-ing into Chicago you may want to consider using a shuttle service rather than renting a car for the week. In honor of AMT’s 75th anniversary a very nice book about the history of AMT has been developed. This will be available for purchase beginning at the na-tional meeting in July. A new and improved national AMT web page will soon be up and running. It promises to be user friendly and easy to navigate. A soft launch of this new page will be later this spring with a goal of having it fully functional before our summer meeting in Chicago. With the continued evolution of AMT moving to more electronic means of communication the Publications committee is evolving as well. Among the changes is a new name for this committee. Effective immediately it will be-come the Publications and Electronic Media Com-mittee. This committee will be charged with provid-ing guidance to our state editors in regards to ex-panded use of the Internet as a means of providing information to our state societies. The committee has
been working on a rewrite of the Editor’s Manual. The Council spent the better part of a day reviewing this rewrite and have returned it to the committee for final revisions. This new manual will be introduced to the state editors at the national meeting this sum-mer and will become effective on January 1, 2015. One of the more significant changes is in the dead-line date for the spring and fall publications. Histori-cally the deadlines have conflicted with national holidays. To avoid this problem in the future the new deadlines for publication will be May 15 and November 15. The national office is diligently working to convert all of the forms on the web site so that they will be fillable on line. Currently they must be printed and then filled out. The goal is to get all of them con-verted to the new format. If a form you need to use is not converted when you go on line please keep checking. Many of you are in the third year of your regular CCP cycle for your membership. Your state society meetings and our national meetings are ex-cellent opportunities to acquire the required credits you need to maintain your certification. Once you attend a continuing education session there is one more step you need to take. You need to go to the AMT web page and record your attendance in AM-TRAX. You also need to retain your proof of atten-dance in the event you become one of the members who is audited according to the regulation of our ac-crediting agency. I am hopeful of spending time with many of you at our national meeting in Chicago. I would also re-mind you that it is not too early to begin thinking about and planning to attend our annual gathering in 2015. It will be held in the beautiful island state of Hawaii on June 21 – 25, 2015. HOW DO YOU LOOK AT WORK?? By Gretchen Tupa, RMA
Have you ever had trouble getting a job or had every-
one look at you differently? Have you ever wondered
why? Lets take a look at the students today coming out
of schools. Do they look professional, like they can do
the job you want to have filled? Do they look like
someone your geriatric patients or your pediatric pa-
tients want around them? I know the following items
seem to be more accepted in today’s world, however
when dealing with the elderly or the very young, the
following can have some negative connotations.
• Tattoos
• Body and facial piercings
• Heavy makeup especially on the eyes
• Off beat hairdos especially with spikes or odd col-
ors
• Scrubs that are too tight, too short, too wrinkled
A vast amount of elderly people do not care to be
around “youngsters” who do not fit the old fashioned
mode of “professional looking” in their appearance.
With the very young, quite often the fashionable pierc-
ings and tattoos can scare small children.
If your employer has asked you or has hinted at your
covering your tattoos, taking off at least the facial
piercings, removing the heavy makeup and or the col-
ored streak of purple or green from your
hair….Remember there is a reason for it. Step back,
try to think like your grandparents or a tiny child. If
it would bother them , then it will bother your pa-
tients. Being professional is not just about knowing
your job. It’s also how you present yourself to others.
Are you clean, neat and smell clean with no “plumbers
butt” when you bend over or are you looking like a
elderly person’s version of a “tart, a harlot or gang-
ster”. If you are not sure then ask your supervisor or
your boss. Then be willing to take any criticism in a
learning way not a “ they are just putting me down”
sort of way. Be clean, neat and hair neatly combed.
You are the face of AMT! Take PRIDE in your profes-
sion. BE PROUD! But most of all: Take Pride in
Yourself.
THE OLD DAYS by Gretchen Tupa
Medications, wages, births and even reasons
people died have changed a bit in the last 100 to 200
years. There have been so many changes just in the
last 50 years alone. Can you even imagine what it
will be like in another 50 to 100 years? I know that I
have trouble with it. I keep imaging something like
the medical area from Star Trek…. Just wave some-
thing over the body and it heals… A lovely thought
but right now impossible.
So imagine back. For instance in the year
1903, the five leading causes of death were diseases
like: Pneumonia, and the flu, Tuberculosis, Diarrhea
( they didn’t know to rehydrate), Heart Disease and
lastly Stroke. Now we still have these today but
with medications and treatment patients recover and
can lead productive lives. Just imagine having a
doctor who did not have a college education.
Ninety percent of physicians in the early 1900’s just
went to medical schools, not college. And many of
the medical schools were labeled by the government
as being substandard. Would you want that type
of doctor to come to your house to deliver your
baby.. That is what you would have. Either that or a
neighbor or relative since in the early 1900’s more
then 90 % of births occurred at home.
People still tried to use quackery cures, snake oils,
tonic oils and other so called remedies that the local
traveling salesman would bring through. Dentistry
was painful as they did not use numbing agents
when they pulled teeth. Which was done a lot
instead of doing a tooth filling as no one could af-
ford them. Mostly because the average wage in the
US was around 20 to 22 cents an hour. If you were
lucky enough to have a job.
So remember when you need to go see your doctor,
have an MRI, EKG or CT that we have come a long
way and will continue to advance in the care and
treatment in the medical field. Be glad you live in
today's world with doctors who are qualified and
board certified.
