NKANDLA HOSPITAL
NEWS S T A Y I N F O R M E D
April– July 2017
J ULY is a month of a great leader,
the UN General Assembly de-
clared 18 July "Nelson Mandela
International Day" in recognition of
the former South African President’s
contribution to the culture of peace and
freedom. Mandela Day gives us the op-
portunity to be charitable and selfless!
On the 27th of July Nkandla Hospital
identified and paid a visit to two fami-
lies residing in Nkandla to deliver do-
nations. Both these families were identi-
fied as needy. The message we are
sending out there is, it is not only for
the government who has to intervene in
fighting poverty but everybody can
contribute by donating something to
those in need.

T he primary objective of conducting
mass immunization campaign was
to eliminate measles by giving vac-
cines to as many children over a
short period of time in a large geographic area.
Nkandla hospital engaged in the measles cam-
paign which ran from 12 to 30 June.
Children from 6 months to 4yrs & 11 months
were vaccinated irrespective of their immun-
ization status. Nurses visited the surrounding
crèches situated far from health care facilities,
this move even assisted in catching up for those
children that are not brought for vaccination as
well.
The commitment and the hard work of the staff
contributed tremendously to the success of this
campaign. Nkandla Hospital nurses visiting the surrounding crèches to give vaccine

programmes is of paramount important to
Nkandla Hospital service providers. It is out of
this notion that on the 7th of July 2017, Sir Mbatha
rendered health education talk to patients and
relatives in Out Patient Department about mental
health problems. The purpose of the educational
talk was to equip the community members with
knowledge to better understand and be able to
identify a family or community member who
might have signs and symptoms of mental illness.
Sir Mbatha concluded by requesting his audi-
ence to take care of their family members and
ensure that they get all the help they need re-
garding health.
M edical male circumcision is one of
the most common procedures
performed worldwide and com-
plications are very rare and usu-
ally easily resolved. Nkandla Hospital is among
those that encourage males to get circumcised. On
the 1st of July 2017, another MMC campaign was
conducted at the Hospital for males aged 10–49yrs,
this was the perfect opportunity for youngsters as
they had a short break from school. It was pleasing
to see a lot of youngsters taking the initiative and
committing themselves in being circumcised.
MMC has been proved to reduce the risk of HIV-
negative men becoming infected with HIV.

The contribution made by our sponsors is acknowledged. The country is facing a high rate
of poverty, identified families were very happy about the little that was contributed on that
day. Our deepest appreciation goes to our partner DSD for accompanying us on the day.
The office of the PRO received two In-service trainee who are both from the University of Zu-
luland. They will spend six months with Nkandla. We hope that they will enjoy they stay with
