Welcome to Las Vegas!
The 2013 convention held at the University of Nevada Las Vegas was put on by an assortment of fabulous hosts. President Caroline Tucker had a board of superheroes: First Vice President Peter Chung, Second Vice Presi-dent Danny Trunzo, Communications Coordinator Molly Hemenway, Par-liamentarian James Dow, Historian Janet Chen, and Editor Trace Turner.
Many state delegations enjoyed side trips to see the sights of the Las Vegas urban des-ert, while for others, the draw of the big city was purely Certamenational. Between academic contests like testing and Certamen, graphic arts competition, Olympika and Ludi, and dramatic arts, there was something for everyone in Vegas.
Enjoy the nostalgia as you flip through the pages: this is the first installment of a 3-chapter scrapbook, and I hope to see you in future pages!
“I will always treasure the memories I have of the laughter I shared with friends at lunch in the Union, the intensity of Spirit, and the camara-derie between delegates”
“The Friendly Hand of JCL grabbed my soul when no one else ever did. It saves me from the troubles of my daily life.” Elliott Rebello, MD
“I really enjoyed making many new friends and getting to know a lot of cool people from all across the nation this summer!”
Allyson Ping, MA
“What I love most about the JCL isn’t the winning, the competition, nor the screaming until I can’t speak for days. It’s the feeling I get from knowing that I’m spending a week with students who are passionate enough to still find meaning in the classics. Is there anything better than that?” Stephanie Wong, IL
The Louisiana delegation enjoys a side trip during their stay in Vegas. Other states like Indiana also enjoyed sight seeing on their way to convention.
General AssemblyCaroline leads her first GA of the 2013 convention, and Mayor Carolyn Goodman makes an excellent welcome speech.
ColloquiaThe Odyssey in song is always hit among the col-loquia sessions, but also included were literary and spirit sessions.
TestingYou can take all or none, but there’s a test for ev-eryone: Greek, grammar, history, culture, art, and geography.
Welcome DanceElvis made an appearance to welcome everyone to the fabulous UNLV campus.
1” At convention, I do not have to feel limited to being one type of
person. I can be a Certamen buzzer-beater, Michael Jordan on the Ludi Basketball court, or a voting delegate with the power to turn the tide of a presidential race - without ever having to choose.” Hojung Kim, New Hampshire
2” This convention, I stepped out of my comfort zone by initiating
friendships, by buzzing in at certamen even when I wasn’t sure, and voicing my opinions more. I know the JCL “fosters brotherhood,” because, even though I am challenged, I always feel the support of fellow JCLers, which gives me more confidence and makes me a better friend in return, I think.” Abbey Haines, Missouri
3 “The thing I like about NJCL was that I went to my first one with
only KY friends across the board, but I came out of that experience with friends all over the country. It’s amaz-ing how just being passionate about Latin can bring people together from a thousand miles apart.” Cullen Smith, Kentucky
4” I love the NJCL because of the people. There’s literally no other
place like it in the world. It’s a mixture, and the best part is that we all come voluntarily. That’s why we’re so en-thusiastic about Latin. Nobody holds back.” Volanta Peng, Florida
5” I go to convention to be truly at home among my fellow JCLers,
JCL provides a bond that we can all use in a variety of ways. I use it to give hugs. I think the most unique part is, it doesnt matter where or when we are together for everyone to bond- it’s greater than that.” Jeff Dubuisson, MA
Susan Schearer, the NJCL’s longstanding member and “godmother of Certamen”
graced her 50-somethingth convention this summer. Ms. Schearer is the pillar of com-mitment and love that every
JCLer strives to become in their future. There were a total of 7 silver bowl recipients this year
at convention.
day 1MondayJuly 22, 2013
David Greaves (Missouri), Stephanie Wong (Illinois) and Gray Alexander (Tennes-
see) all enjoy convention together. Gray and Wong met last year at
conventiona nd maintained the friendship, while Greaves was a new addition to their bond this year. The addition of a new member to their tri-umvirate only added to the
bond they shared.
Vegas offers certain unique opportunities, like a magnitude of Elvis impersinators. Mi-randa jennings of Texas makes friends with some of the Vegas natives dur-ing the first dance of the conven-tion week.

1”At NJCL, I go for the Latin and stay for the friends.” Gray Alexander, Tennessee 2”National convention was really a special part of my sum-
mer because you get to interact with completely new people from completely different places. What makes it really amazing is that everyone has a common interest that unifies people across the country.” David Greaves, Missouri

day 2roll call
1Quincy Tichenor and Hojung Kim of New Hampshire perform their
memorable roll call skit. Star wars is never out of placec at a Latin conven-tion!
2Texas brings the singalong power with “We Are Texas”, the hot single
of the summer. Ruiqi He busts out the guitar with the anthem of convention, making us all feel like maybe Texas has a little room for the rest of us to join in as well.
3Elizabeth Hamm, later speaking at a General Assembly, represents
the sole delegate of Hawaii.
States like Texas, Virginia, and Florida are known through-out convention for their massive attendance rates. They’re also famous, however, for their incredible spirit.
It’s incredibly difficult to get heers together even if your del-egation is a party of two, but for states with over a hundred delegates, the complicated cheers and dances really make an impact.
Delegates from all over shed their inhibitions and go B-A-N-A-N-A-S for spirit at con-vention. EKU and and UNLV shared bridal veils, and this year, bowties made an appear-ance in several states, including Illinois and Georgia. Not only are they dressing up their spirit events, but they’re keeping it classy. Keep it up, JCL!
Tip!
1SCLer Kurt Ristroph never loses the opportu-
nity to show his JCL spirit by donning a purple and gold Batman suit for the duration of convention.
2Illinois can’t let go of their blackhawks theme
during the spirit week, start-ing out with a Stanley Cup and staying strong with the “Blackhawkative” protests.
3Gold and purple brides bring the spirit for
Cupid’s little purple adn gold chapel theme.
4Georgia’s Abraham Kim gets involved in spirit
during GA with his foil beard.

Many students come to NJCL for academic contests and graphic arts, but there is a certain gifted subset that put their efforts into Ludi and Olympika. These are the ath-letically inclined who work hard to balance academic interests with athletic goals. Discus, basketball, track, swimming, and volleyball are just a few of the atheltic events sponsored by the NJCL, and there will surely be a great deal mroe in the future.
Miles Harriston of Maryland unabashedly states that “Be-fore I joined the JCL, all I did was listen to Kanye. Now I can’t stop listening to Macklemore: NJCL Edition”. Com-petitive JCLers know exactly what’s in their pockets as they go in for the basket, spike, or flipturn: points for their state.
The SCL always does a fabulous job of running our ludi events. Without their dedication, we would not have the haven for overly competitive ludi guys that we’ve come to know and love.
According to omnipowerful SCLer Melanie Keating, “run-ning ludi is one of the big ways that the SCL gives back to the JCL. It takes a lot of time and dedication, but the amazing people I meet keep me coming back year after year”.

Mary Kate La Bar may look like your average JCLer, but she has a very unique claim to JCL fame: she is the only member of the Oregon delegation. La Bar, a previous member of the Illinois delegation, didn’t want to lose her JCL family when she crossed the country. According to La Bar, “Because of NJCL, I have made lifelong friendships with people from all over the country and have gained the confidence to try and start my own state chapter!!! Without the support of goofy Latin nerds everywhere, I would have never decided to take on such a huge project. I am so honored to have the opportunity to pass on my passion for JCL to many others.”
Elizabeth Hamm is another example of a strong, independent JCLer who truly embodies the friendly hand of JCL, spreading the love of clas-sics across the country and sharing the JCLove with everyone.
