Online PD July 2015

• For the online component of the summer professional development, teachers reviewed the sample Ready Common Core resources for their grade level and an online teacher toolbox with interactive whiteboard lessons and additional resources. They examined these resources and discussed topics such as: how example problems emphasize concrete-pictorial-abstract-writing to deepen mathematical understanding; alternative teaching strategies to differentiate instruction; ability of whiteboard problems to engage students while improving fact fluency. They also discussed steps their PLCs might take to advocate for supplementing or replacing curriculum in their district with these types of Common Core resources. Additionally, teachers reviewed and completed worksheets to be used for the summer face-to-face leadership training and watched and reflected on a Peer Coaching webinar.

Summer Workshop August 2015

• During the summer workshop, the school-based K-5 teacher teams established in Years 1 and 2 continued to work together, strengthening their expertise in high-leverage teaching practices while also developing expertise with collaborative professional growth strategies and their ability to build and manage PLCs – with the ultimate goal of developing a self-sustaining PLC within each of the participating schools. Working in grade-level groups across districts, teachers explored resources for topic in geometry, measurement and data, among others, during the morning sessions. Working in their school-based K-5 vertical teams, they explored leadership topics in the afternoon sessions. Topics for the week-long workshop included the following:

Sustainability Discussion

• Union City PLCs that meet once a month during school day seem to have the most likelihood of continuing after grant ends

• How can administrators grant coverage or common planning time so PLC can meet monthly as multi-grade math teachers?,

• ….or those that have been practicing lesson study can continue visiting each other’s classes?

• Impact of personnel changes of grade-level or building: opportunities to spread NJPRIME PLCs

• Developing the NJPRIME online community further
