ForImmediateRelease:June20,2013Contact:SethHahn,(732)306‐7729CWAHailsPassageofSaveNewJerseyCallCenterJobsActbyStateAssemblyLaunchesAdvertisingBlitztoPersuadeGovernorChristietoBarCompaniesthatShipNJJobsOverseasfromReceivingStateTaxBreaksTRENTON–TheCommunicationsWorkersofAmericahailedtodaythepassageoftheSaveNewJerseyCallCenterJobsAct(A3775,sponsoredbyAssemblymembersConnieWagner,TimothyEustace,WayneDeAngeloandDanielBenson)bythefullStateAssemblybyavoteof51to23.Theunionalsoannouncedapubliceducationcampaignaboutthebill,whichwouldpreventcompaniesthatshipNewJerseyjobsoverseasfromreceivingtaxbreaksandsubsidiesfromtheStateofNewJersey.HavingalreadypassedtheSenate22‐11,thebillnowheadstoGovernorChristieforsigning.SethHahn,NewJerseypoliticalandlegislativedirectoroftheCWA,said,“Theideabehindthisbill issimple:CompaniesthatreceivetaxpayermoneyhavearesponsibilitytocreatejobsinNewJersey,notshipjobsoverseas.SpeakerOliverandtheAssemblyvotedtodayforsimplecommonsense.NewJerseyranks44thnationwide inprivatesectorjobgrowthsinceFebruary2010,and47 th ineconomicgrowthinthattime.NewJerseylost30,400callcenterjobsfrom2006‐2011,astaggering22%ofallcallcenterjobsinthestate.GovernorChristieneedstoact.SigningA.3775/S.2188wouldhelpprotectthe105,900NJcall‐centerjobsindangerofbeingshippedoverseas.SharonAdamo,PresidentofCWALocal1023added,“Werepresent725callcenterworkersnow,butourlocalhad3,000workerstenyearsago.Thepeoplewerepresentworkveryhardanditcanbeverydifficultwork,alldayonthephoneandnobreakbetweencalls.Butit’sstillagoodmiddle‐classjobforpeopletohaveandbeabletoraisetheirfamilies.WeseeunemploymentandpeoplewithoutjobsinNew Jerseyanditjustdoesn’tmakesensethatcompaniesdoingworkforthestateandreceivingmoneyfromthestatedon’thavetocreatejobshere.”CWALocal 1023represents725VerizoncallcenterworkersinNorthernNewJersey.1
