Nirupama Menon Rao born on December 6, 1950 is Indian
Foreign Service officer who is the current Ambassador of India to
the United States of America since August 2011. Prior to this
assignment, she has served as Foreign Secretary of India for a
period of 2 years.
Nirupama did her educations at institutions located in Pune,
Bangalore and Lucknow as her father was working in the army.
Nirupama Rao did her graduation in English Literature from the
Mount Carmel College situated in Bangalore & after that she did her Masters in the same subject from
the Marathwada University of Maharashtra in India. She was a
bright student who secured a top rank in the All India Civil Service
Examination that was held in 1973.
Nirupama Rao joined the Indian foreign service & occupied several positions like
foreign secretary of India, high commissioner in Sri Lanka, fellow of the centre for
International affairs of Harward University, Ambassador of India to China, additional secretary in charge of administration &
personnel in the ministry of external affairs, minister in the Indian embassy in Washington, Ambassador of India to Peru, deputy chief of
mission at the Indian embassy in Moscow, distinguished International executive in the
residence at the university of Maryland, USA etc. Apart from all these positions, Nirupama
Rao has bagged the Sri Chithira Thirunal award that was instituted in memory of Sri
Chithira Thirunal, former King of Travancore. This award was recently announced &
comprises of a cash price of Rs one lakh.
