Welcome to Point Lookout SLSC Junior ActivitiesOn behalf of the Junior Activities Committee (JAC), welcome to all our new and continuing members and thank you for choosing to be a part of Point Lookout SLSC and the Surf Life Saving family. Nippers is a program that introduces children aged 5 to 13 years to surf lifesaving and the age group is determined as of midnight on the 30th September at the commencement of each season. It is a fun outdoor activity that grows a child’s confidence and teaches valuable life skills and knowledge.

Junior Activities plays a key role within Surf Life Saving as it is the foundation for the future of our unique organisation. The program objectives have been designed to encourage and support our young members by providing the best possible lifesaving experience with an over-arching aim being to encourage long term participation; providing opportunities for Junior Activities members to participate in enjoyable lifesaving activities and competition in an aquatic environment by offering a wide variety of activities suited to the skill and maturity levels of all juniors and ensuring the juniors are safe on Australia’s beaches through the provision of beach safety education programs. Our guiding principles are based around Family, Fun and Friendship.

The Junior Activities Committee is a sub committee of the Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club with the responsibility for conducting the Nipper program. Everyone is welcome to attend and contribute to the JAC monthly and annual meetings. A list of Office Bearers for the season and their contact details is available in this booklet.

Meetings are generally held the first Tuesday of the month at 6.30pm.

Nippers at StraddieJunior Activities (Nipper) training is held on North Stradbroke Island on Saturdays.

Families are to meet at Cleveland (Stradbroke Ferries) by 7.30a.m. in readiness to walk onto the 8.00 a.m. barge. On arrival you must sign in your attendance for the day. At least one registered parent/guardian must travel to the island with your child/children each week.

When we reach Dunwich, all nippers and registered adults will be transported to the Club on the buses provided.

Depending on numbers each week, this process may vary so listen for instructions during the barge journey. Priority is given to Age Group Leaders so that the program can commence on time on the beach.

HistoryOn behalf of the Junior Activities Committee (JAC), we acknowledge the traditional owners of the land and sea on which we hold our program, the Quandamooka people, we pay our respects to the Elders past and present.

Point Lookout SLSC has been involved in the evolution of the Junior Activities (Nippers) movement for 50 years. Established in 1967 through the efforts of Bram Thompson (Life Member), the Point Lookout Junior Activities have developed traditions which still remain strong today. From the early beginnings with a handful of local lads to now providing a solid source of future patrolling surf lifesavers at Point Lookout, the Junior Club continues to improve and grow, despite the many logistical challenges along the way.The Stradbroke Island Nippers Association (Stradbroke Sharks), later changed to Point Lookout Junior Activities, began in 1967. At that time, only boys were eligible to join and only locals were in the Club with the primary focus of providing island boys with some form of organised healthy activity. Unfortunately after this magnificent start, there was a gradual decline in the nippers and the program ceased.

With the commitment from the Senior Club and support from the local community, the Nippers recommenced with a fresh start in 1974. Throughout the 70s and 80s, the Club grew in strength and its successes were recognised at carnivals up and down the coast. Many Junior members experienced notable individual successes and the Club became synonymous with the March Past event in the late 70’s, early 80s. History has shown that the Club’s best results have been in team events which perhaps is why the Club shares a team spirit that remains the envy of many other Surf Clubs.

To provide a comparable activity for girls, a Nipperette Association was formed in 1978 allowing girls to also participate and compete and the two genders were eventually amalgamated in 1981/82. From the mid-1980s, a large proportion of members were now from the mainland, and far exceeded the island residents.

The next 20 years saw the Nipper Program evolve further seeing a strong focus on the Nipper members gaining awards covering areas such as Resuscitation, Surf Awareness, Surf Safety and First Aid. Parents too started to gain awards within the Surf Life Saving Association to support their children and to help with the Junior Program.

Junior Membership in the 1990s grew substantially with figures reaching 156. The logistics of transporting the junior members from the mainland to the Point every Saturday has, and still remains, a challenge; however this situation has never deterred the Club. In the early days, the Junior members would walk onto the barge in mass and be transported from Dunwich to the Point for the day’s activities. The early 90s saw a move to hire 3 Bayside buses to transport the eager children and parents to the Island for the days training, however this approach came at a cost. The Junior Committee worked hard to fundraise to cover such costs.As we rolled into the 21st Century, membership was opened up to include Under 6s and in 2007/08 our Nipper membership was capped at 200. Today, Junior Activities membership is open to children aged between 5 and 13 years and the Club has had to cap its membership due to the large numbers reached each season. Due to rising costs and competing priorities with other sports and family commitments, the Club continues to profile its uniqueness. There is no other Club in Queensland that endures the logistically challenges that the Point Lookout SLSC Junior Activities do.

History Continued:

Transport logistics of our Nipper families continues to be a priority as we use strategies for a seamless system to get our members over to our beautiful beaches of North Stradbroke Island.

Despite the challenges, there continues to be some great flow on effects from Junior Activities with many members recognised for completing their nipper years through to the Senior Club. Many of the Under 14 Nippers progress into the Senior Club to become patrolling members, providing a vital community service to the bathing public. We have had some great success stories with our Nippers winning State Nipper of the Year Awards, being selected for Youth Development Programs, performing well at Branch, State and National Championships and being selected in Representative teams.

The Point Lookout Junior Activities Committee has continued to maintain its strong status as a “family” club and the Nippers are very much an integral part of the bigger family within the Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club. From our humble beginnings as the Stradbroke Island Nippers Association to our current status as the Point Lookout Junior Activities (Nippers), we are proud to say that our program stands as a testament to the foresight of Bram Thompson and to his tireless dedication to achieving his aim back in the 1960s.

We are extremely proud to say that Point Lookout SLSC Junior Activities have been successful in many facets of Surf Lifesaving. Some of our more recent successes include:

* Inaugural recipient of the South Coast Branch Junior Activities “Nipper” Club of the Year (2015) and AGAIN in 2018;

* South Coast Branch Junior Lifesaver of the Year - Erin Oxenham (2016/17);

* Australian Medallists in Pool Rescue and Board Riding and State Medallists at the Qld Youth Championships;

* Point Score Champions in the SCB Surf Rescue Championships.

Travel Considerations this SeasonFor the 2019/20 season, we will be on the 8am Barge returning at 2.30pm. Some members at the discretion of the JA Executive/Stradbroke Ferries, may have to travel via the water taxi.

At the Beach On arrival at the beach, children assemble at their designated Age Group Flags. Ensure your child/ren are well sun screened, with no jewellery (medical alert excepted), in club togs with pink hi vis shirt and noddy cap and have a water bottle. The Age Group Leaders (AGL) will mark the roll and brief the children on the program for the day.

Lunch Time Depending on which beach Nippers is being held at, the groups will either have lunch at the Club House (Main Beach) or remain at Cylinder Beach and eat in the park area. You may bring your own, or purchase BBQ options prepared by the Club volunteers. There will usually be a short meeting after lunch to communicate important messages.

Afternoon Program After lunch we return to the beach to enjoy some “family time” with parents if time permits. During this time water safety supervision is provided by the AGLs and water safety officers and on occasions nippers may participate in some further activities as organised by the Program Coordinators and AGL’s. There may also be some specialist group training for those children wishing to compete at carnivals as organised by the relevant coaches.

Weather Only in extreme conditions will training days be cancelled. Even if it is raining at Cleveland, more often than not it is a beautiful sunny day at Point Lookout.

Parental Involvement / Volunteer HelpSuitability Cards

Under SLSA regulations, parents must have a Suitability Card (Blue Card) or they will not be permitted to participate in nipper activities. As nippers must be accompanied by at least one registered parent during nipper activities non-possession of a blue card would mean that their child would be unable to participate in these activities. Suitability Card forms are available from the Nipper Secretary and must be returned as soon as possible. If you already hold a Blue Card, please obtain a verification form from the Nipper Secretary so that it may be registered with SLSA.

Parental Assistance

As with any sport, it takes numerous hands to make sure the day runs to plan. In addition to Age Group Leaders, Water Safety Officers, Program Coordinator, Gear Stewards, IRB Drivers and Crew, Coaches etc everyone’s help is required to ensure that the day runs smoothly and efficiently.

Each week, parents will be allocated on a “Volunteer Job Roster”.

Jobs range from assisting first thing in the morning with food preparation, cooking the BBQ, selling food and drink tickets etc. Each job should take up only a small part of your day either in the morning or at lunch time. A roster will be circulated whereby parents will be rostered once every 3-4 weeks to assist. Some weeks we may be short, so if you can volunteer to help, it is greatly appreciated.Job descriptions are available to provide guidance on what these “jobs” are and how you can help. Club Officers will be there to provide support also.

AwardsParents are encouraged to become actively involved with Junior Activities by obtaining their Bronze Medallion and assisting with Water Safety and/or Age Group Managers where possible. There are a number of groups starting throughout the season. Nippers is like all sports which require new members to undertake training each year to ensure that those valued, experienced members who will be finishing with Nippers in the current year (due to their children graduating to the Senior Club) are able to pass on their knowledge and experience and keep the Nipper program running.

If you are unable or unsure about completing your Bronze Medallion, you could consider undertaking a number of other training courses provided by the Club. These include Radio Operators, First Aid and Officials. There are plenty of areas you can become involved. Surf Lifesaving is something for the whole family to become involved in to raise your awareness of surf safety and the lifesaving movement.

For every five children we are required to have 1 water safety officer in the water. An Age Group Leader must be a proficient Bronze/SRC holder as must our water safety officers. When we compete in carnivals we are required to provide 1 water safety officer and 1 official for every 10 competitors. These jobs are not hard, but we do require parental help to ensure our children are eligible to learn and compete. For more information please see the Nipper Secretary.

Lunch CanteenThe Canteen serves two valuable functions. Not only is it the primary source of renourishing hungry nippers during an action packed nipper day, it is also a primary fundraising facility for Nippers. As mentioned earlier, preparation of the Lunch Canteen is one of the essential “jobs” which requires volunteers on a weekly basis. Everyone’s contribution ensures that the Canteen can continue to provide our nipper families with quality and value for money lunch catering. It is expected that parents of Nippers who are not assisting in key roles as AGL’s, Water Safety or other key JA positions, will be rostered onto the lunch roster system.

ClothingNipper clothing is available from the Clothing Officer on sign on day, and usually on Saturdays at lunch time on Nipper days. If you have any queries, please contact the Junior Activities Clothing Officer Kirsty Firmin via [email protected].

FacilitiesParents and nippers have access to the majority of Club facilities. The showers that nippers are to use are accessible from the grassed area next to the gear shed doors on the lower level. Junior Activities (including parents) are not to use or access the senior showers or senior bunkroom facilities. The pool table is also out of bounds during Nipper days at Main Beach.

Swimming Proficiency (Pool Evaluation)It must be strongly emphasised that we do not teach children how to swim. Children MUST be able to swim in freestyle unaided for:-

ALL Nippers must do the qualifying swim. It is the qualifying swim that permits your Nipper to participate in Junior Activities. If you are unable to make sign on day for the qualifying swim contact the Nipper Secretary to make alternative arrangements.

Beach EvaluationTo maintain safety in the surf, all junior members must successfully complete the Beach Evaluation prior to undertaking any water based activities. This ensures all children can meet a standard of competence to enable preliminary levels of survival skills. Any child that does not meet the required evaluation level will require a higher level of supervision when involved in water based activities..

Competition EvaluationAny member wishing to represent the Club in competition MUST successfully complete the Competition Evaluation Swim. This distance is GREATER than the Beach Evaluation and ensures that all juniors wishing to compete have the ability, strength and fitness standards to complete the courses at carnivals.

AwardsEach Age Group has a Life Saving Award to achieve during the season.

The Nipper Program is designed to ensure children have fun at the beach while participtating in lessons that will provide them with a pathway to become fully rounded participants in both lifesaving and sport activities. The program includes a wide range of subjects and skills relative to the aquatic environment and prepares Junior Activities members for their transition from Junior Activities to becoming a senior member and aims to promote the spirit of camaraderie and citizenship within the community.

Ensuring Our Young Lifesavers Are SafeThe Surf Education Program is a lifesaving education program designed for 5-13 year olds. This education program provides young members of Surf Life Saving with developmental lessons that provide an introduction into the surf awareness and surf safety aspects of the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) . The SRC is the introductory award for a patrolling surf lifesaver (13-15).

Surf Play 1 & 2

Play based experiences in shallow water and on the beach to develop awareness of the beach.

Surf Awareness 1

• Develop an understanding of who goes to aquatic venues and what they do there.

• Develop an awareness of SLSA, what surf lifesavers do and who can be a surf lifesaver.

• Understand and develop introductory running, swimming and paddling skills in a surf or aquatic environment.

Surf Awareness 2

• Develop basic beach, ocean and aquatic sense• Develop a basic awareness of the various hazards in beach or

aquatic environments• Expand their understanding and development of running,

swimming and paddling skills in a surf or aquatic environment

Surf Safe 1

• Develop an awareness of usage trends and activities at local aquatic venues

• Develop an awareness and knowledge of the safety services in the local area.

Blue Cards The Association has a Members Code of Conduct, and is committed to its Members Protection Policy.

Surf Life Saving Queensland is committed to the safety and welfare of members and others who engage in surf life saving. The “Blue Card” Screening Policy has been created to protect all individual members who are under 18 years of age from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury, exploitation and abuse (including sexual abuse) while under the care and conduct of any Surf Life Saving leader, instructor/trainer, manager or coach.

All members over 18 years are required to complete a Working with Children Check application (“Blue Card”), which is administered by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act (2000).

The Blue Card Working with Children Check is confirmed by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian. This process is confidential and assists the Club in our duty of care for providing a safe environment for children.

All volunteers must hold a “Blue Card” before they start volunteering in any area of lifesaving, regardless of how often they come into contact with children and young people.

A Blue Card Volunteer Application form is available from the Club Administrator or JA Secretary.

The role of parents/carersThe role of a parent/carer is critical to a young person’s well being and ongoing involvement. Supportive parent/carer provides essential care, education and enthusiasm. A challenge for a parent/carer is getting the right balance between disinterest and overbearing involvement, and being able to read their child’s changing support needs. JA Executive and age group leaders will provide a brief on their expectations in relation to supporting the children and assisting with activities.

Boards / GearPoint Lookout is a rare club that provides equipment for our Nippers. It requires an enormous amount of fundraising and effort to acquire and maintain our nipper gear. Therefore we have to ensure that the use of such equipment is well governed.

Any use of Junior Activities gear must be arranged through the Junior Activities Director. This means ALL gear from tent pegs to rescue boards.

Boogie Boards are for Green Caps and U8s. Nipper Foamie boards are for U9 and U10’s. Fibreglass Nipper boards are for U11, U12 and U13. Racing Mals are for U14.

Competition boards are to remain on the competition trailer and are not to be used for training unless directed. U14’s use full size Malibu paddle boards. Boards are not to be dragged on the beach. If a member is too small to carry a board, two should carry it together. Boards are not to be thrown down on the sand. When you have finished using a board, wash as much sand as possible off and put it away.

NOTE: MEMBERS WHO MISTREAT BOARDS MAY BE ASKED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE COST OF REPAIRS.

Personal GearThe Club cannot be responsible for a member’s personal gear. It is up to the member to take care of their own gear, and not leave it lying area. Put your name on everything!

Because of our unique logistical constraints, we are unable to allow the transport of personal boards on the chartered Nipper buses. We are also unable to offer storage of personal gear at the clubhouse.

CompetitionLike all sports there is an opportunity for your children to compete if they wish to. Carnivals are organised where the children compete against others of the same age from different Clubs. However there are strict guidelines for competition, again to ensure the safety of our children. These guidelines will be explained to you, but please don’t hesitate to ask questions of either the team managers or coaches if your children are interested in competition.

Expressions of Interest in competing can be made on carnival nomination forms that are regularly promoted or via our Nipper face book page. The carnival fee is paid by the Club, however if a competitor is nominated and does not compete, they will be required to reimburse the carnival fee costs to the Club. This fee varies depending on the Branch hosting the carnival. Our club belongs to the South Coast Branch that incorporates all clubs from Point Lookout to Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Club.

All competitors must successfully complete the Competition Evaluation swim to be eligible to compete in carnivals. This is a standard open water proficiency requirement based on the distances set at carnivals.

The other area of competition is Club Championships also known as “Points Days” where the children compete for points in the events they have participated in during the season. Points are awarded for placings and tallied to determine age champions in each age group.

To be eligible to receive trophies, children must have attended 2/3 of the total nipper days for the season. This means that if there were 18 nipper days in the season, then your child must have attended 12 days over the entire season to be eligible for trophies.

This “2/3 of total nipper days” rule also applies to eligibility for State Titles. If your children are in the Under 11 to Under 14 age groups they can qualify for State Titles. Further information on the Club’s Selection Policy for Competition is available upon request.

RulesAs we have our Club reputation to protect, our behavioural expectations are high. Therefore:

• No inappropriate language will be tolerated

• Bullying or harassment of other children will not be tolerated

• Children are to obey instructions given on the buses and barges

• All children must be seated first on the buses and if necessary, adults will be required to stand

• NO PERSONAL SURF BOARDS or body boards will be transported on the buses

• No food or drinks are allowed on the buses including chewing gum / bubble gum.

• Children are required to stay on the bus until advised by the driver to disembark.

• Nippers must return to the buses as soon as requested by Club Office Bearers.

• All JAC members must be wearing a club shirt and footwear to travel with JAC. on the barge and buses.*

• Running between the vehicles is not allowed.*

• Nipper areas when travelling on the barge will be contained due to the multi-level barges. JAC personel will brief nippers on the boundaries. Adults must supervise their children at all times.*

• Adults walking onto the barge must wear a club shirt and wait for the instructions to board by the ferry staff. Some parents will be asked to wear a hi vis shirt to assist with supervision.*.

• When necessary, children and adults will take direction from either bus drivers or barge staff*

These regulations have been set down by the Ferries operators and are endorsed by the JAC Executive.

Beach Rules• Participating nippers must wear their nipper caps (noddy)

at all times. If for some reason your child does not have their nipper cap with them you may need to borrow one.

• For safety reasons, it is perferrable that no jewellery be worn (both boys and girls)

• It is preferrable that no board shorts are to be worn whilst participating in nipper activities. It is acceptable to wear board shorts to and from the island and during the lunch break.

• All children are expected to participate in all activities. If they are unable to do so, then parents must notify the Age Group Leader.

• All children must wear their pink hi vis rash shirt during all water activities.

• Our club provides gear for the use of members and it is expected that it will be looked after (treat it as your own)

• Foam boards are to be used by the U8s, U9s, U10s only

• It is expected that children “cream up” at least twice a day. Sunscreen is available for this purpose. Parents are to take responsibility for their child’s sunscreen.

• During the lunch break nippers must stay in the designated areas until recalled by the Age Group Leaders. This means that children cannot return to the beach, even under adult supervision, until the entire age group returns.

• All children must be marked off via a roll call after lunch.

Around The Clubhouse Rules• No children are allowed upstairs, unless under the direct

supervision of their Age Group Leader

• No wet feet or bodies are allowed in the hall

• No food or drink on carpeted areas and no playing pool.

• No children in either the men’s or the women’s bunkroom

Brief Summary of Weekly Volunteer Rostered Jobs TRANSPORT COUNT - Count the number of passengers walking onto the barges/water taxi Advise the numbers to the barge deckhand if needed. Provide the numbers to the JA Director or his delegate for record keeping and invoice reconciliation.

FOOD PREPARATION – On arrival at the club (approx 9.15am) help unload provisions from the bus/vehicle. Cut up fruit ready for beach morning tea. Help with the preparation of salad for Burgers – washing and slicing lettuce and tomatoes etc. Prepare meat and sausages for cooking. Set up production line for assembling burgers. Set up food area. Ensure bins are placed in suitable areas. Take the fruit to the beach at 10.30 a.m.

DRINKS PREPARAYION - Stack drinks into esky, arrange ice pick up and ice down drinks ready for lunch sales.

COOKING/BBQ – Need to be at clubhouse/Cylinder lunch area (depending on venue) by 10.30am. Two people to help cook meat and onions on BBQ. Check gas bottle and advise the lunch coordinator or one of the JA Exec if gas requires refilling. LUNCH SERVICE TEAM (Based on rotational roster)

SELLING LUNCH TICKETS – Need to be at Clubhouse/Cylinder Beach lunch area by 11.45pm Responsibilities include: collect lunch money float from Treasurer or Assistant Treasurer, count burger tickets and sell tickets for lunch food.

SERVING – Need to be at Clubhouse/Cylinder Beach lunch area by 12.00pm.sharp. Basically you are helping to serve members with hotdogs and burgers.

LUNCH DRINKS - Need to be at Clubhouse/Cylinder Beach lunch area by 12.00pm. Collect drink money float and sell soft drinks.

CHOCOLATES AT LUNCH - A chocolate box fundraiser will be available at lunch time. Generally the U14’s take control of selling these items.

CLEAN UP – After lunch, washing up, put away. Clean bench tops, BBQ, Tables. Clear and pack away food. Check no litter left in eating area. Any tables & chairs or tents need to be returned to the hall or shed. NOTE: An age group may be asked to help with the clean up duties.

CLUBHOUSE DUTIES Sweep kitchen and hallway. Return bins from back eating area to front of clubhouse. Pick up loose rubbish around the outside of the Clubhouse.

CYLINDER BEACH DUTIES: Ensure lunch equipment is returned to the Cylinder Shed and packed away neatly. Empty rubbish into the industrial bins so that picnic area bins are not overloaded.

PUB RAFFLES – At 12.00 noon two people required to go to Straddie Pub to help our Pub Raffle Coordinators - Judy Lobley and Julie Verrall sell raffles. You will be transported by bus and picked up by nipper bus to go home if required.

HELP TO CLEAR BEACH – At the end of the nipper day, we need helpers to collect boards and gear from the beach, help load up the nipper trailers and pull down the tents. Many hands make light work..

BARGE TRIP DUTIES - Several parents will be asked to wear a hi vis rash shirt to act as a supervision authority whilst travelling on the barge or water taxi. Nippers are to ensure that the canteen area is left free for other guests travelling on the barge. Top deck and lower deck are out of bounds for Nippers.
