9.30am Holy Communion, Baptism, and Admission to Communion

Preacher & Celebrant The Rev’d Sam Goodes

Greeting

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Blessing of the new Paschal Candle

This Paschal Candle and its light is a symbol among us of Christ risen from the dead, reconciling us with God.

Christ yesterday and today, the Beginning and the End, Alpha and Omega: all time belongs to him and all the ages. To him be glory and power through every age and for ever. Amen.

Five nails are placed in the extremities and centre of the Paschal Candle.

By his holy and glorious wounds may Christ our Lord guard us and keep us. Amen.

The priest blesses the candle and sprinkles it with Holy Water

The priest lights the candle from the previous year’s Paschal Candle, saying,

May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds. Alleluia, Amen.

Baptism Response

There is one Body and one Spirit; there is one hope in God’s call to us. One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of all.

Baptism is the gift of our Lord Jesus Christ. When he had risen from the dead, Jesus commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today to obey that command. Baptism with water signifies the cleansing from sin that Jesus’ death makes possible, and the new life that God gives us through the Holy Spirit. In baptism, the promises of God are visibly signed and sealed for us. We are joined to Christ, and made members of his body, the Church universal. So we welcome you, John, Evelyn, Sascha, Jensen, and Helen. We give thanks for you, and pray that you may know God’s love and faithfulness for ever.

Confession & Absolution:

Let us affirm our trust in God’s mercy and confess that we need forgiveness. [Let us pray.].

Lord God, you created this world, and made us in your own image. Forgive us when we turn away from you. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Lord God, through your Son you overcame evil and death. Rescue us from slavery to sin. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

Lord God, by your Spirit, you restore us to fellowship with you and with one another. Breathe your love and freedom into our lives. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Page 4: Ninth Sunday after Pentecost · 1. In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love’s safety and room. Baptizing and blessing we publish for good the freeing, caressing

4

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sin, strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

We say together the Hymn of Praise (Gloria)

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

(Let us pray) O God, giver of life and health, whose Son Jesus Christ has called us to hunger and thirst for justice: refresh us with your grace, that we may not be weary in well-doing, for the sake of him who meets all our needs, Jesus Christ our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Baptism

Rev. Sam invites those to be baptised to respond to the following questions.

We welcome John, Helen, Evelyn, Sascha, and Jensen who come to be baptised. I invite John’s parents to present him now.

Page 6: Ninth Sunday after Pentecost · 1. In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love’s safety and room. Baptizing and blessing we publish for good the freeing, caressing

6

Nathan and Wendy respond

We present John Wayne Butcher to be baptised.

Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing John for baptism? I will.

Are you willing to answer on behalf of John? I am.

By your own prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage John in the life and faith of the Christian community? I will, with God’s help.

All Baptismal candidates now answer:

Before God and this congregation, you must affirm that you turn to Christ and reject all that is evil:

Do you turn to Christ? I turn to Christ.

Do you repent of your sins? I repent of my sins.

Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? I reject them all.

Do you renounce Satan and all evil? I renounce all that is evil.

Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, and lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. Amen.

Will you each, by God’s grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life’s end? I will, with God’s help.

Rev. Sam addresses the congregation

You have heard these our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? We will.

Baptismal Hymn: (as we move to the font)

1. In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love’s safety and room. Baptizing and blessing we publish for good the freeing, caressing safe keeping of God.

2. In water we wash: the dirt of each day, its trouble and rush are carried away. In Christ re-created by love’s cleansing art, self-will and self hatred dissolve and depart.

3. In water we dive, and cannot draw breath, then surface alive, rebounding from death. Our old self goes under, in Christ dead and drowned. We rise, washed in wonder, by love clad and crowned.

4. In water we dwell, for by its deep flow through bloodstream and cell, we live, think and grow. Praise God, love outflowing, whose well of new birth baptizes our knowing, and waters the earth.

Page 8: Ninth Sunday after Pentecost · 1. In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love’s safety and room. Baptizing and blessing we publish for good the freeing, caressing

8

Let us give thanks for this gift of water. Holy God, at the beginning of creation your Spirit moved across the waters, bringing forth life; through countless waters of danger you have led your people to safety; through the waters of birth you launch us into sunlight; and in the water of your tears you cleanse us with your forgiveness. Thank you for this gift of water, this symbol of life, this refreshing sign of your presence. Thanks be to God.

And now we give you thanks that you have called your children: John, Helen, Evelyn, Sascha, and Jensen to new birth through the waters of baptism. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that they who are baptised in it may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May they die to sin, rise to newness of life, and be united with God, now and forever. Amen.

Rev. Sam says to John’s Parents and the other Candidates

I now ask you to affirm as yours the faith of the Church. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God the Father, who made the whole world.

Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who was born in Bethlehem and lived among us, who died on the cross for us, and rose from the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit who brings life and love to us all.

Do you affirm the community of faith we call the church? I believe that the Church is one family, and that one day we will share everlasting life with God in heaven.

Rev. Sam addresses the congregation

This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith: We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

Rev. Sam baptises each candidate, as he pours water over them, saying

name, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Rev. Sam annoints each candidate, saying

name, I sign you with the sign of the cross, the sign of Christ. Live in the faith of Christ and be of good courage as you journey through God’s world. Walk in Christ’s footsteps, speak of his wisdom, trust in his goodness.

God has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Shine as a light in the world, to the Glory of God.

God has called you all into his Church. We therefore receive and welcome you as members with us of the body of Christ, as children of the one heavenly Father, and as inheritors of the Kingdom of God.

The congregation greets the newly baptised with applause.

The Liturgical Assistant (Sally Sandford-Morgan) presents the candidates for Admission to Communion

I present to you Evelyn, Sascha, and Jensen, who have been growing in their understanding of Holy Communion and its importance for helping us live as followers of Christ.

The Rector continues

Gracious God, we thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ; may these young people who have come to be admitted to Holy Communion grow strong in Christ and may the fruit of the Holy Spirit grow richly in their lives. Amen.

Page 10: Ninth Sunday after Pentecost · 1. In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love’s safety and room. Baptizing and blessing we publish for good the freeing, caressing

10

Admission to Holy Communion is an important step for you in your Christian life. It looks back into your baptism into the Christian community. It looks forward to your adult confirmation of the baptismal promises. Do you wish to be admitted to Holy Communion?

Candidates: We do.

The Rector continues.

A person is admitted to communion on the basis of their baptism, the sign and pledge of incorporation into the death and resurrection of Christ and the new life of the kingdom of God. Evelyn, Sascha, and Jensen have been baptised, and now they receive the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ with us. We welcome them and look forward to learning with and from them as we journey together on the Way of Christ.

We are God’s pilgrim people. We share in the story of God’s love for the world, God’s love in Christ, calling us to himself, God’s love in the Spirit, giving strength for our journey of faith. As the people of God in this place, we share the responsibility of encouraging one another in our worship and supporting one another in our discipleship, by our example and our prayers.

The Rector says to each candidate: Name, In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I welcome you to share in the Holy Communion.

The Celebrant continues

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Thank you, loving Father, that you call us into fellowship with yourself and your Son through the Holy Spirit, and that Evelyn, Sascha, and Jensen desire to participate more fully in the life that you give us.

Page 11: Ninth Sunday after Pentecost · 1. In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love’s safety and room. Baptizing and blessing we publish for good the freeing, caressing

11

Fill them with peace as they are nourished by the precious body and blood of Christ in this most holy sacrament so that they may serve you in love and faithfulness this day and for ever. Amen.

Greeting of Peace

We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you.

Offertory Hymn:

1. I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved and free, the life of Jesus to recall, in love laid down for me.

2. I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ’s communion bread.

3. As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends. The love that made us makes us one, and strangers now are friends.

4. The Spirit of the risen Christ, unseen, but ever near, is in such friendship better known: alive among us here.

5. Together met, together bound by all that God has done, we’ll go with joy, to give the world the love that makes us one!

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour, be yours now and always, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. In baptism you have united us to him and brought us out of darkness into light. You pour your Spirit upon us, filling us with your gifts, and calling us to serve you as a royal priesthood. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

Page 13: Ninth Sunday after Pentecost · 1. In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love’s safety and room. Baptizing and blessing we publish for good the freeing, caressing

13

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sin of the whole world.

(Let us proclaim the mystery of faith)

Christ has died Christ is risen Christ will come again.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

Blessing and honour, glory and power, are yours for ever and ever, Amen.

Page 14: Ninth Sunday after Pentecost · 1. In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love’s safety and room. Baptizing and blessing we publish for good the freeing, caressing

14

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray for the coming of God’s Kingdom, as Jesus has taught us:

Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of Bread and Communion

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body: for we all share in the one bread.

The congregation joins in the Agnus Dei.

Jesus, lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace.

Invitation to Communion

The gifts of God for the people of God. Come, let us take this holy Sacrament of the body and blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, in remembrance tht he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts, by faith, with thanksgiving.

15

Prayer after Communion

(Let us pray) Gracious God, in baptism you make us one family in Christ your Son, one in the sharing of his body and his blood, one in the communion of his Spirit. Help us to grow in love for one another and come to the full maturity of the body of Christ. Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out, in the power of your Spirit To live and work to your praise and glory. Final Hymn

1. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave clothes where thy body lay. Refrain Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won!

2. Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for her Lord now liveth, death hast lost its sting. Refrain

3. No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife; make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above: Refrain
