hen it comes to choosing photographic equipment,

perhaps the most important decision a photographer

faces is which lens system to use. For the majority of

professional photographers, that choice is simple:

Nikkor. Why? Because NIKKOR lenses offer unrivalled clarity,

sharpness, focusing accuracy, range and reliability.

The reasons for this are many, not the least of which is

Nikons total commitment to controlling every aspect of lens

manufacturing. By selecting only the finest raw materials and

employing the most advanced processing and design tech-

niques, Nikon produces the precision-crafted lens elements that

help you take the worlds greatest pictures.

This no-compromise attitude toward ultrahigh-tech manufac-

turing extends to performance. For each NIKKOR lens is

NIKKOR Lenses Seamless Performance, Absolute Precision, and Total Reliabilitdesigned to function seamlessly with Nikon SLRs in a synergy

of purpose that is simply unparallelled. This is exemplified most

clearly in the legendary Nikon F mount. For even the most

advanced NIKKOR lenses incorporate this standard that has

won over decades of devotees for its consistency and reliabil-

ity. This design also ensures that when we release revolution-

ary cameras like the Nikon F6, D3 and D300 with features

such as 3D Colour Matrix Metering and i-TTL Bala

Flash, you can be sure to find an array of NIKKOR le

    can handle these advances too.

Once you see for yourself how smoothly the Nikon

combination works, chances are youll do what mo

improved overall lens designand ensuring the superior

    performance of the finishedproduct.

Electronics microcomputerinnovation for preciseperformanceThe recent advances in thecomputer industry play an

integral role in the makeupas well as design of NIKKORlenses. For in addition to

superior optics, each AFNIKKOR features a built-inmicrocomputer. This micro-computer works with theNikon AF camera computer

system to provide informationthat ensures fast autofocus,Matrix exposure metering,

Balanced Fill-Flash, and otherNikon innovations in SLR per-

    formance.Only NIKKOR lenses are

designed for today's andtomorrows Nikon SLR cam-

eras, based on informationand insight available exclu-sively within Nikon includ-

ing autofocusing parameters. No other lens maker can pro-

vide this type of assurance. The Nikon F lens mount a tradition of continuityand forward compatibilityThe debut of the originalNikon F also marked the

introduction of what is per-haps its most significanttechnological innovation

the Nikon F lens mount. This legendary design

ensures that your Nikoncamera is compatible with

most NIKKOR lenses andthat your Nikon equipmentcan accommodate futuresystem advances.

Moreover, the F mountachieves something no otherdesign can it is compati-

ble with both types of lensdrive systems the conven-tional mechanical AF cou-

pling design for wideangleand standard zooms, andNikons exclusive SWM(Silent Wave Motor) systemfeatured in the most

advanced supertelephotoNIKKOR lenses. This is justone example why the Nikon F

mount continues to be anintegral part of Nikon camera

    equipment design.

Reliability lenses madeto withstand the toughestconditionsEach NIKKOR lens is manu-factured to meet the moststringent requirements in the

industry. The optical glass isscrutinised to assure it is free

of imperfections, whereuponit is then remelted, cast,

ground, polished and hard-coated to emerge as one ofthe worlds finest lens ele-ments. After being precisely

mounted in lens barrels, thelens elements and theirassemblies undergo a bat-

tery of tests and inspections, including vibration and tem-

perature-resistance analysis. One of these tests concerns

the lens Optical TransferFunction (OTF), which evalu-ates the resolving power andcontrast of the lens. To per-

form this test, Nikon devel-oped the exclusive NikonOTF Analyser (NOA).

In addition to theseuncompromising tests, Nikontechnicians further guarantee

the performance of the finalproduct by going over everydetail of every finished lens. They check and assure themechanical construction,

electronics, AF movement, zoom and aperture mecha-nisms, and lens resolution.

All of which ensures that thelens does what its supposed

to provide the outstandingoptical performance and reli-ability that make NIKKORlenses the pros choice the

    world over.

ikon began producing lenses under the NIKKOR name in 1933, and since then morethan 40 million lenses have been sold worldwide. Throughout the years, our unwaver-ing commitment to quality and innovation has yielded many breakthroughs in the photo-graphic industry. For example, Nikon introduced the Nikkor Auto 24mm f/2.8 incorpo-

rating Nikon-pioneered Close-Range Correction (CRC) system in 1967, and startedproduction of aspherical lenses in 1968. In addition, Nikon developedED (Extra-lowDispersion) glass which made its first appearance in the 300mm f/2.8 ED Nikkor tele-photo in 1972, and is now incorporated in many other NIKKOR lenses. And in 2003,

Nikon produced theAF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor12-24mm f/4G IF-ED, as the first lensoptimised for Nikon DX-format digital SLRs in the new DX NIKKOR series. These are just a few of the many achievements in lens design that exemplify Nikons posi-

tion as the worlds preeminent manufacturer of professional photographic equipment. Thefollowing offers in-depth technical information that will help you understand more fully thatNIKKOR lenses provide superior performance and are thus the best match for your Nikon SLR.

Where it all begins Nikon glassworksTo make the finest lens ele-ments, you must begin withthe finest optical glass. To

ensure this, Nikon does whatfew makers can it manu-factures the glass for nearlyall NIKKOR lenses in its own

glassworks. This means ourlens designers have over

200 types of glass to choosefrom, giving them an excep-tional variety from which toselect just the right opticalglass for their requirements.

Moreover, when theserequirements demand lensproperties not yet available, the glass technicians work to

find a solution which oftenresults in engineering new

types of glass. This is pre-

cisely how Nikon developedExtra-low Dispersion (ED)glass in 1972 to meet

design demands for super-telephoto NIKKOR lenses.

    Lens constructionThe peerless craftsmanship

of NIKKOR lens elementsis matched by the structuresthat house them. Only

the best materials areused for the mechanicalconstruction of each lens.Fine metal alloys and

polycarbonates make upthe helicoids in somelenses. Inner and outersleeves are tooled with

maximum precision, result-ing in the smooth lensmovement that characterises

    the NIKKOR lens. The lens

    mount, too, features similarmaterials.

Computers and lens designNikon designers employ thelatest computers and Nikon-developed software to deter-mine the optical design of

each lens. Using this datatogether with their accumu-lated experience, they create

    the finest SLR lenses avail-able.

Computer-aided designsimulation is also used to

ensure the utmost precisionin the optical and mechanicalparts of each lens as well asthe quality of the lens assem-

bly process. In this way, com-puters can identify problem-atic areas thus leading to

    ED glass an essential element

of NIKKOR telephoto lensesNikon developed ED

(Extra-low Dispersion)glass to enable theproduction of lensesthat offer superior

sharpness and colourcorrection by minimising chro-matic aberration.

    Put simply, chromatic aber-

ration is a type of imageand colour dispersion thatoccurs when light rays of vary-

ing wavelengths pass throughoptical glass. In the past, cor-recting this problem for tele-

    photo lenses required special

optical elements that offeranomalous dispersion charac-teristics specifically c alcium

fluoride crystals. However, fluo-rite easily cracks and is sensi-tive to temperature changesthat can adversely affect focus-

ing by altering the lens refrac-tive index.

So Nikon designers andengineers put their heads

together and came up with EDglass, which offers all the bene-fits, yet none of the drawbacks

of calcium fluorite-based glass. With this innovation, Nikondeveloped several types of EDglass suitable for various lenses.

    They deliver stunning sharp-

ness and contrast even attheir largest apertures. In thisway, NIKKORs ED-series

lenses exemplify Nikons pre-eminence in lens innovationand performance.

    Nikon SuperIntegrated Coating

ensures exceptionalperformanceTo enhance the performanceof its optical lens elements,

Nikon employs an exclusivemultilayer lens coating that

helps reduce ghost and flareto a negligible level.

Nikon Super IntegratedCoating achieves a number

    of objectives, including min-

imised reflection in the widerwavelength range and superiorcolour balance and reproduc-tion, even with Zoom-NIKKOR

lenses featuring a large num-ber of elements. It is also effec-tive in minimising ghost andflare caused by internal reflec-

tions from the image sensors ofNikon digital SLRs.

    Also, Nikon's multilayer

    coating process is tailored to

the design of each particularlens. The number of coatingsapplied to each lens element

is carefully calculated tomatch the lens type andglass used, and also to

assure the uniform colour bal-ance that characterisesNIKKOR lenses. This resultsin lenses that meet much

higher standards than therest of the industry.

    Nano CrystalCoat

Nano Crystal Coat isan anti-reflective coat-

ing that originated in the devel-opment of NSR-series (NikonStep and Repeat) semicon-ductor manufacturing devices.

It virtually eliminates internallens element reflections acrossa wide range of wavelengths,

    and is particularly effective in

reducing ghost and flare pecu-liar to ultra-wideangle lenses.Nano Crystal Coat employs

multiple layers of Nikons out-standing extra-low refractiveindex coating, which features

    ultra-fine crystallized particles

    of nano size (one nanometer

equals one millionth of a mm).Nikon now proudly marks aworld first by applying thiscoating technology to a wide

range of lenses for use in con-sumer optical products.

    Aspherical lenselements

Nikon introduced the firstphotographic lens withaspherical lens elements in

1968. What sets them apart?Aspherical lenses virtuallyeliminate the problem ofcoma and other types of lens

aberration even whenused at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in

correcting the distortion inwideangle lenses. In addition, use of aspherical lenses con-tributes to a lighter and small-

    er lens design.

Nikon employs threetypes of aspherical lense lements .Precision-ground aspherical lens

elements are the finest expres-sion of lens-crafting art, demanding extremely rigorous

production standards. Hybridlenses are made of a specialplastic moulded onto optical

glass. Moulded glass aspher-ical lenses are manufactured

by moulding a unique type ofoptical glass using a special

    metal die technique.

    Close-RangeCorrection system

The Close-Range Correction(CRC) system is one of

Nikons most important focus-ing innovations, for it providessuperior picture quality atclose focusing distances and

increases the focusing range. With CRC, the lens ele-

ments are configured in afloating element design

wherein each lens groupmoves independently toachieve focusing. This

    ensures superior lens per-

formance even when shoot-ing at close distances.

    The CRC system is used

in fisheye, wideangle, Micro, and selected medium tele-photo NIKKOR lenses.

    Internal Focusing(IF)

Imagine being able to focus alens without it changing in

size. Nikons IF technologyenables just that. All internal

optical movement is limited tothe interior of the nonextend-ing lens bar rel. This allows for

a more compact, lightweightconstruction as well as acloser focusing distance. Inaddition, a smaller and lighter

focusing lens group isemployed to ensure fasterfocusing. The IF system is

featured in most NIKKORtelephoto and selected

    NIKKOR zoom lenses.Rear Focusing(RF)

With Nikons Rear Focusing(RF) system, all the lens ele-ments are divided into specif-

ic lens groups, with only the

rear lens group moving forfocusing. This makes autofo-cusing operation smootherand faster.

    AF DC-NIKKOR lensesunique NIKKOR lens-

es for unique portraitsAF DC-NIKKOR lenses feature

exclusive Nikon Defocus-image Control technology. Thisallows photographers to control

    the degree of spherical aberra-

tion in the foreground or back-ground by rotating the lens DCring. This will create a rounded

out-of-focus blur that is ideal forportrait photography. No otherlenses in the world offer thisspecial technique.

    Distance information

    D-type and G-type Nikkor

lenses relay subject-to-cam-era distance information to

AF Nikon camera bodies. This then makes possibleadvances like 3D Matrix

    Metering and 3D Multi-SensorBalanced Fill-Flash.

    Note: D-type and G-type NIKKOR lens-es provide distance information to thefollowing cameras: Auto exposure; F6,F5, F100, F90X, F80, F75, F70, F65,F60, F55, F50, PRONEA S, PRONEA600i, D3, D2 series, D1 series, D300,D200, D100, D80, D70S/D70, D50 andD40X/D40. Nikons AF-S technology isyet another reason profes-

    sional photographers like

NIKKOR telephoto lenses.AF-S NIKKOR lenses featureNikons SWM which convertstravelling waves into rotation-

al energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed auto-focusing thats extremely accu-rate and super q uiet.

    M/A mode

    AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature

    Nikons exclusive M/A mode,

that allows switching from aut-ofocus to manual operationwith virtually no time lag

even during AF servo opera-tion and regardless of AFmode in use.

    Vibration Reduction(VR)

This innovative VR systemminimises image blur caused

by camera shake, and offersthe equivalent of shooting ata shutter speed three stops

    (eight times)faster.* Itallows hand-

held shoot-ing at dusk,at night, andeven in poor-

he newest addition toNikons world-class NIKKORlens lineup, the DX NIKKOR

series was developed inresponse to the demands ofprofessional and advancedamateur digital SLR users forhigher optical performance. The popularity of Nikons digitalSLRs has risen significantly, and Nikon has answered withthe kind of innovation youdexpect from a world leader inoptical technology.

Nikon created the DXNIKKOR series to provideNikon DX-format digital SLRowners with greater wideanglecovering power. Mounting a35mm format 14mm widean-gle lens, for example, onto adigital camera would result in apicture angle equivalent to thatof a 21mm lens negating thebenefit of wideangle coverage.DX NIKKOR, the first inter-changeable lenses designedspecifically for use with

Nikon DX-format digitalSLRs, give owners wideangleshooting capability in a com-pact, lightweight package.

Nikon offers nine DXNIKKOR lensesvariousZoom-NIKKOR lenses and

the 10.5mm Fisheyetocover a range of shooting situ-ations. In addition to lenses withpopular zoom ranges, the line-up includes newer zoom lens-es with telephoto ranges thatextend up to 200mm (equiva-lent to 300mm in 35mm for-mat). The 18-200mm lensoffers an astonishing 11.1x

    zoom power.

ikon offers over a dozen AFZoom-NIKKOR lenses allof which are outstanding.

The information below willgive you a better idea ofwhich lenses are most suit-able for you.

The most obvious startingpoint when considering a zoomlens is focal length, for that will

determine your range of usage.Need a great standard zoomfor the wideangle to mediumtelephoto range? For greaterwideangle coverage, the 14-24mm, 17-35mm and 18-35mm are favourites of land-scape photographers and oth-ers who need to shoot expan-sive scenes. Then there are themore powerful lenses like the70-300mm or 80-400mm.These are ideal for sports andaction photography, and fortaking shots of people from adistance. And for truly high-power zoom needs, the 24-120mmlens offers 5x ratio. Not

only is this lens versatile, this iscompact as well.

The speed, or maximumaperture that a lens offers isanother crucial factor. There areseveral AF Zoom-NIKKORlenses in the wide, mediumand powerful telephoto rangewith a fast f/2.8 that are sure tofit your demands. The AF-S 14-24mm, AF-S 17-35mm, AF-S24-70mm, AF-S 28-70mmand AF-S VR 70-200mm areall perfectly suited for hand-held shooting in dim light.

Macro focusing is anotherfeature that most AF Zoom-NIKKOR lenses offer. Thoselenses with the highestreproduction ratios are the24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF(1/2),and the VR 7 0-20 0mmf/2.8G IF-ED (1/3.7).

ideangle NIKKOR lens-es are perfect for shoot-

ing in tight indoor areas orwhen taking group shots.Travel, landscape, and com-mercial photography are justa few of the applicationssuited to these lenses. The14mm f/2.8D ED offers thewidest views.

For one of the mostunique perspectives in pho-tography, theres the 16mmfisheye f/2.8D. FeaturingNikons unique Close-RangeCorrection (CRC) system, the lens provides a 180angle of view with consistentpicture quality from all focus-ing d istances.

Normal lenses are socalled because they providea 46 picture angle, for anangle of view that approxi-mates that of the human

eye. They are useful formany applications, fromlandscapes to candid shots.Other advantages includewide maximum apertures. The 50mm f/1.4D isextremely fast, and the50mm f/1.8D is the mostcompact of all AF NIKKORlenses.

Other AF-S NIKKOR fea-tures include an innovative

M/A control that lets youswitch quickly from automaticto manual focusing modes, ergonomically placed focuslock buttons, and a focusrange limiter that diminishesautofocusing time.

For exceptional portrait pho-tography, try the AF DC-NIKKOR lenses. They offerNikons exclusive Defocus-image Control which allowsyou to adjust the amount offoreground or backgroundblur with a rotating ring. Nine-blade diaphragm built into thelenses creates a rounded out-

The maximum aper-ture of the lens can determine how

and in what lighting situations you canshoot. Aperture value is indicated by f-number which can be expressed in var-ious ways: f/8, F8 and 1:8, for example, all refer to the same effective aperture.

    Lenses with large maximum apertures

(smaller f-numbers) are fast lenses thatallow photographers to use faster shutterspeeds in dim light. This minimises theneed for a tripod or flash, allows greaterdepth-of-field control (see below) andoffers a brighter image through the lensfinder for easier focusing.

    Lenses with smaller maximum aper-

tures (larger f-numbers) allow the use oflower shutter speeds for available lightbut are also lighter and smaller thanfaster lenses. Nikon offers someNIKKOR lenses with equal focallengths, but different maximum aper-tures to give you a variety from whic h to

    choose.

This term refers to theareas of the photograph both in frontof and behind the main subject thatare acceptably sharp. You can adjustdepth of field by adjusting the lensaperture. The smaller the aperture(larger f-number) gives you a greaterdepth of field. This means that shootingat larger apertures like f/1.8 will makethe background appear blurred, whileusing small apertures like f/16 or f/22

will result in a picture wheremuch of the scene is insharp focus.

Focal length is also impor-tant, for the depth of fielddecreases as the lens focallength increases. Thus, wideangle lenses offer inher-ently more depth of field along theentire focal length while telephoto lens-es have less.

Selecting which lens to purchase is one of the most important decisionsyou can make as a photographer, for the lens often determines both what and how you can shoot.

Below, weve outlined a range of technical factors to considerwhen searching for the lens thats right for you.

Choosing the right lens some points to consider

Picture angle refers to theview or image area the lens provides, and different picture angles can dra-matically affect the way you view theworld through your lens.

Basically, it is the focal length of thelens that determines the picture angle

the shorter the focal length, the wid er

the picture angle and the smaller theimage size. A longer focal lengthmeans a narrower picture angle andlarger image size. For example, a50mm normal lens is so called becauseit gives a 46 picture angle in 35mm(135) format for images that are about thesame size with that of the human eye.

Accordingly, wideangle lenses offerbroader views and are the favouritelenses of landscape photographers andthose who shoot in tight interior spaces.Telephoto lenses pull in distant subjectsand scenes, for a narrower pictureangle that can provide dramatic close-ups for many types of photography.

Perspective is a phenomenonthat is easier to understand by examplethan explanation and is wholly deter-mined by the camera-to-subject dis-tance (see photos, above).

In short, perspective is the relative

size and depth of subjects within a pic-ture; that is, how far the foreground andbackground appear to be separatedfrom each other. If foreground objectsappear much larger than those in thebackground which occurs when

using wideangle lenses this is calledexaggerated perspective.

Understanding the different perspec-tives offered by d ifferent lenses will helpin choosing which lens to use to createcertain photographic effects.
