INTRODUCTION
What is a Digital Image ? A digital image is a representation of a two-
dimensional image using ones and zeros (binary).
What is Digital Imaging ? Digital imaging or digital image acquisition is the
creation of digital images, typically from a physicalscene.
What is Night Vision ? Night vision is the ability to see in a dark environment.
Whether by biological or technological means, night vision ismade possible by a combination of two approaches: sufficientspectral range, and sufficient intensity range.

HOW NIGHT VISION WORKS
Night vision technologies can be broadlydivided into three main categories:
Image intensification
Active illumination
Thermal imaging

Imageintensificationtechnologies workon the principle of magnifying theamount of received photonsfrom variousnatural sourcessuch as starlightor moonlight.
Examples of suchtechnologiesinclude nightglasses and low
light cameras.

ACTIVE ILLUMINATION
Active illumination technologies work on theprinciple of coupling imaging intensificationtechnology with an active source of illumination in the near infrared (NIR) or
shortwave infrared (SWIR) band.
Examples of such technologies include lowlight cameras.

THERMAL IMAGING
Thermal imaging technologies work bydetecting the temperature differencebetween the background and the foregroundobjects.
The figure below shows an image of a dogtaken from thermal(mid-infrared) light.

HOW IMAGES ARE ACQUIRE THROUGH NVD’S
Night vision devices gather existing ambient (starlight, moonlight or infrared light) through the front lens.
The light, which is made up of photons goes into aphotocathode tube that changes the photons to electrons.
The electrons are then amplified to a much greater number
through an electrical and chemical process.
The electrons are then hurled against a phosphorus screenthat changes the amplified electrons back into visible lightthat you see through the eyepiece.
The image will now be clear green-hued amplified re-
creation of the scene you were observing.
