Pre-planning and Preparedness

5

• Advance notice and a reputable service provider are the most important aspects of your toolbox

• Well before your mission, ensure that your service provider has vetted their local ground handling agent in matters such as Compliance, Safety, Security and Service Level

• If sufficient notice is not given, credit cannot be arranged through most local ground handlers

• Due to counterfeiting throughout Africa, when paying for services such as handling or airport fees in cash, they will usually only accept the latest series of bills

Page 6: Nigeria & Africa Operations · Lagos, Nigeria – DNMM • 24 hour operations • Slots are not required • 1 hour drive time to/from Downtown • Expect Heavy airport traffic in

Holiday Preparedness

6

• Know and make

preparations for operations during all Public Holidays in Africa

• Most Civil Aviation offices and local Airport Authorities may be closed or propose alternate operating hours; reflecting in the delay of your approval and clearance processes

Page 7: Nigeria & Africa Operations · Lagos, Nigeria – DNMM • 24 hour operations • Slots are not required • 1 hour drive time to/from Downtown • Expect Heavy airport traffic in

Special Health Concerns – Vaccinations

7

• Travelers must comply with their specific arrival country’s Yellow Fever entry requirements

• Keep in mind that country requirements are subject to change at anytime. Please check with your trip support provider, local embassy, or consulate prior to departure

• Other vaccines to consider are the standard routine vaccines, as well as Hepatitis A & B, typhoid and rabies

Page 8: Nigeria & Africa Operations · Lagos, Nigeria – DNMM • 24 hour operations • Slots are not required • 1 hour drive time to/from Downtown • Expect Heavy airport traffic in

Special Health Concerns - Malaria

• Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with Malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like symptoms

• Determine if the location you are travelling to is an area where Malaria is endemic. There are very few countries in Africa that are malaria-free, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The US Center for Disease Control maintains a current map of the malaria risk areas. This map can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/

• Visit your doctor at least 6 weeks before your departure to discuss

obtaining malaria pills for both prevention, as well as treatment

8

Page 9: Nigeria & Africa Operations · Lagos, Nigeria – DNMM • 24 hour operations • Slots are not required • 1 hour drive time to/from Downtown • Expect Heavy airport traffic in

Special Health Concerns - Malaria

• Wear long pants and long-sleeved clothing,

especially around the dawn or dusk hours when

the mosquitos are most active

• Use your personal Deet-containing insect repellent on all

exposed skin areas. These can often be found in lotions,

gels, and aerosol spray cans

• Since mosquitoes are attracted to light, be sure to switch off all

unnecessary lighting while you are sleeping

• Avoid wearing strong perfumes, colognes, and after-shaves

9

• At some locations, Hospitals and Clinics are limited in quantity and of minimal quality.

• When travelling to desert countries, remember that dehydration and other heat related injuries can occur in any season. In desert areas, emergency services are limited or non-existent. Remember to hydrate often and take regular breaks

• Please be sure to fill all prescriptions prior to your travel. However if you are travelling with medicine above the normal limits of a first aid kit, it is highly recommended to travel with a detailed list, describing the quantity, usage and purpose of carriage

• Don’t drink the WATER….. Always lean toward that trusted bottle of water

12

Page 13: Nigeria & Africa Operations · Lagos, Nigeria – DNMM • 24 hour operations • Slots are not required • 1 hour drive time to/from Downtown • Expect Heavy airport traffic in

• Don’t take offense, most people are simply trying to survive, support and care for their families
