    FOREWORD

It is the nature earth where hazards exist in the form of environmentalprocesses or events with potential of causing a disaster. On the other hand, it is the

same earth where ecosystems and natural resources provide buffer and capacitiesagainst the impact of disasters. Thus, our earths environment holds the key forunderstanding and reducing disasters. Therefore, knowing and caring our environmentcan help us protect from the impacts of disasters, which are otherwise growing innumbers and intensities. This recalls us to remind Gandhijis thoughts that Earthprovides enough to satisfy every mans need, but not every mans greed .

Our children are our future and safeguarding the future of human race lies intheir hands. Concern of the children on safeguarding environment and reducing therisk of disasters is need of the time. Students have juvenile but thoughtful young

minds with innovative ideas. NIDM tried to capture students ideas and innovationsthrough their poems and slogans on the theme Safeguarding Environment for DisasterRisk Reduction by organizing nationwide competitions.

These contributions in the form of Hindi and English poems and slogans aregreat knowledge in them and give a message in their own ways for reducing disasterrisks using environment based approach. NIDM has brought out this publication as acompilation of these poems and slogans as an awareness drive for illuminating thethinking process in masses and particularly in children on how environmental protectioncan reduce disasters.

I am very optimistic about the use of this publication by various mass media, local institutions, NGOs, education and awareness making institutions in theirprogrammes at local levels.

    PREFACE

Hazards are the processes or the events of nature. Be it an earthquake, alandslide, a flooding, drought or a chemical mishap it relates to environment in itsoccurrence. Environment, in the form of natural resource systems, hold a majorstake in peoples vulnerability to the impacts of these disasters. Concerns andprotection of environment within our development planning process as well as day today activities also reduced our exposure to the challenges of the disasters.

Climate-change is known to aggravate hazards and vulnerability related tofloods, drought, cyclone, landslides, epidemics and forest fires, besides increasingsocial conflicts and miseries. Climatic conditions and environmental phenomenonare also known to factor in the impacts of chemical accidents. NIDM has taken thetheme Safeguard Environment for Disaster Risk Reduction for dissemination ofknowledge and creation of mass awareness.

This samskrit sloka indicates the role of knowledge about our environmentand ecosystems including earth processes for a wider perspective of risk perception(assessment), disaster resistance (blend of avoidance, tolerance, resilience), capacityand recovery potential backed with the ecosystem services and sustainability in theenvironment where a particular community inhabits.

The book is an outcome of the awareness drive of NIDM for students concernon environment for reducing disaster risk and vulnerability. Several schools acrossthe country participated in the competitions organized for slogan and poem writing inHindi and English to mark the occasion of the World Environment Day on June 5,2012. Now, the poems and slogans are compiled, edited and presented in the formof this book as a resource book for awareness programmes at any level ofcommunities, schools and local institutions.

Role of Shri Shekhar Chaturvedi in the endeavour from concept tocommissioning to printing has been significant. Ms. Sreeja S. Nair, Dr. Sushma Guleria

and Ms. Megha Kohli have been instrumental in managing the compilation of poemsand slogans. Design and editorial inputs of Sri Rajnish Goswami (NDRF) weresignificant. Members of the Printing Committee - Dr. Surya Parkash and Shri S KTiwari need special mention of thanks for their cooperation.

Not the least, Prof. Vinod K. Sharma (IIPA) and presently Vice-chairman of SikkimState Disaster Management Authority, Prof. Santosh Kumar and Prof. ChandanGhosh, have been the source of encouragement.

    Safeguard The Environment

for Disaster Risk ReductionHumans greed is more than needs,

And so have changed his deeds.

The blunder he is creating,Is helping the environment in degrading.

It was his duty,To glorify natures beauty.

But alas! He proved to be vain,And all he did was for his gain.

But still there is trust,That our environment can be as strong as the crust.

We must work very hard,And save the environment till our last birthday card.

Environmentalists also tell us to do the same,To live in a city with fun and simplicity!!

Many children go to the same school in different cars,But not knowing that its burning fossil fuels,

It also gives out poisonous gases,But we know a solution to itThat is by using a car pool!!!

Make World a Better PlaceEarthquakes, Tsunamis and Tornadoes

Erupted the life of people, not even lefttheir shadows

All these disasters come in a frightIts we who need to be ready to turn their impact light

Weve suffered for years,The cry of people is difficult to bear

We need to protect the environment and make a better planSo we do not face the situations, we saw recently in Japan

Its high time we must heal the world to make it a better place.for you and for me and the entire human race.

    Fury of GodTsunami, Tsunami

    Why do you trouble me?

When comes a gailIt leaves me frail

    After a stormEverything is calm

Then comes the floodA chill runs in my Blood

In summers a droughtmy throat feels hot

Oops! a SandstormDestroys my body form

God! a forest firewhich grows wilder

What about an earth quakeWhich makes all shake

God says pray and prepareTo take care

Man and EnvironmentMan is so selfishPolluting water of lakes and distrubing fish

Building big beautiful houses in city.Doesnt want to live in simplicityIf today we will cut the trees

Later there will be no more to see.If we will keep on doing this for next 4-5 yearsI believe soon extinction of everything is sure

The man who is doing this in just nights and daysEarth will also treat man in same way.

so, I request treat earth with distinctionOr surely face extinction....

Beauty of Mother NatureI am a child, born to see the beauty of mother nature

But what is this Im seeing? seems theres no lift for future

How can man behave so much as a slaughter? After all its our mother earth and we are like its daughter

Deforestation in our world is one of the major nuisancesWhich is done on a large scale because of our ignorance

Tsunami are often very disastrous and just hit backBut we can use our knowledge and technology, which we no more lack

And can safeguard ourselves from its evasionBy making tsunami alarm to know its occasion

Im just a child pleading for your cooperationHelping our environment for the next generation.

Escaping DisasterA disaster in no time leads to many persons demiseTo escape such risk we have to take an early rise

Many are engulfed by the disasterTo protect their lives, we have to take steps faster

It frowns their relatives left behindAs they are helpless to get their loved ones find

To take preventive measures is the bestFrom facing the consequences and the rest

Practice mock drills to be ready for it any timeAnd if it strikes take steps to make everything fine.

Weather forecasts and predictions about cycloneCan protect the lives of many even in the areas most prone

In case a fire strikes use of sand bags is the bestAs being cheapest of the rest

Theres nothing we cant do, everything is in our handsThen why cant we make the ones, who fall and again stand

From the disaster, take them out who are in needDear friends you would feel nice, by doing a good deed.

The Lovers TripWhile on a distant trip

Going all the way with crispIt just ended up this wayOver the world full of hay

Like an oyster is cruelBut still searches for the pearl

It just ends this frontierOver the earths Fateful Encounter

Cause when one door closesJust as life mosses

Another open for usOver it as a fuss

But we are so regretfulArent able to see whats beautiful

Will change our fateAbhineetam Chours ia
