b) Click  on  “Col  Bkg”

c) Click  “yes”  when  confirmation  box  appears.  The  instrument  is  now  taking  a  background  spectrum  of  the  empty  sample  compartment.

 5) Collecting  a  Spectrum  of  your  Sample

a) FTIR  is  able  to  analyze  solids,  liquids,  and  gases.  Prepare  your  sample  according  to  your  specific  laboratory  procedure.

b) Place  sample  in  the  instrument,  close  and  lock  sample  compartment.    c) Click  Col  Smp.

d) A  window  will  appear  asking  you  to  name  your  spectrum.  Name  your  spectrum  and  click  “okay.”

e) The  instrument  is  now  collecting  a  spectrum.  When  it  is  finished,  a  confirmation  window  will  appear,  click    “yes.”

 6) Saving  Your  Spectrum

a) Go  to  file>save  as  b) Save  your  spectrum  as  a  .CSV  file.  (Example:  Chem212_hexane.csv).  By  saving  it  as  a  CSV

(comma  separate  value)  you  can  easily  open  it  in  Microsoft  Excel.  c) Save  your  file  on  the  desktop,  a  jump  drive,  or  a  specific  class  folde  d) Be  sure  to  close  the  software  and  log  out  when  you  are  done.  Leave  the  instrument  itself
