Dear Friends,

We are involved in some of the most exciting days in the history of Bethany UMC. Bethany is known as the friendly church at the crossroads. We reach out to this community in many ways, making disciples of Jesus Christ. We are committed to spreading the love of Jesus Christ, which requires our investment in the lives of others.

Our efforts will drive the ministry and mission of our church for years to come. Our debt-reduction initiative - Celebrate the Journey - is underway. Five years ago we chose to embark on a journey to expand our facilities in order to better serve our Lord and the community. Great work has been done on this project, so we want to celebrate our accomplishments and the opportunities God has in store for us. The challenge before us is great, but we are not alone. We have each other and the love of Jesus Christ.

As your pastor, I strongly encourage your participation in the initiative in three ways: Pray, Study and Share. Enclosed, you will find a Prayer Card and a Q&A Brochure. Please take a moment to review this information.

Will you commit to pray daily? There is great power when we join together in asking God to bless our efforts. I believe we will see the miraculous presence of God through our prayers as we move forward with the campaign. Please use the prayer dots as a reminder to pray. You may use the suggested prayer or a prayer of your own. Either way, please commit to praying.

Will you commit to a six-week study? This Bible Study starts after Easter and will be a spiritual adventure for those desiring the true riches Jesus promised. We’ve asked that your current Sunday School lessons be put on hold so that all classes can participate in this journey. I hope everyone - adults, youth and children - will join me in one of these studies. If you cannot attend one of the Sunday School classes participating in the study, please attend a study group on Sunday evenings at 6:30pm in the sanctuary.

Will you share the excitement? Included in this packet is a question and answer sheet that will answer many questions. Please read the information and share it with others.

Your prayers, participation and support are greatly needed as we approach our Commitment Sunday on May 19th. Everyone’s participation is important as we join together in pursuit of Christ’s calling.

What does “Celebrate the Journey” mean and what does Bethany want.....

to accomplish through the effort?.....

• “Celebrate the Journey” is a call to action for all Bethany parishioners.

• “Celebrate the Journey” is an appeal to the entire Bethany family to reflect on the past 5 years and celebrate what God has done through the utilization of the new church facilities.

• The goal of this leadership initiative is to encourage all Bethany families to pledge to a three-year financial commitment over and above what they are currently giving. This sacrificial giving will ensure the continued reduction of our current debt on the new facilities for the next three years.

Why do we need a second campaign?....

• The cost of the project was $2,570,130.51. While we hoped to raise the entire amount in the first campaign, it was anticipated and clearly communicated there would most likely be a second campaign.

Why are we doing the second campaign now?....

• We have an obligation to our lender and are committed to making the mortgage payments.

• For the past 12 months, the mortgage has been paid from church reserves in addition to those who generously continued giving beyond their original three-year commitment.

• If we don’t take action now, the present building funds balance will be depleted by August 2013.

What are the specifics on the loan?....

• Remaining balance $1.7 million

• Interest rate 4.875%

Is the current interest rate the best rate we could find?....

• The original rate was 6.25%

• In March 2012, the interest rate was re-negotiated and has been reduced to 4.875%.

• Due to refinancing, Bethany saves $3,400 a month.

How have we been utilizing the additional rooms and stage?....

• Prior to the building project, the number of Sunday school classes exceeded the number of rooms available. There is now sufficient space for all of the Sunday School Classes.

• The stage is more professional and better suited for our contemporary service as well as a resource for community events.

Why did we build during the bad economy?

• When the project began, the economy was not in a horrible situation.

• By building when we did, we were able to get more building for our dollar.

• Due to sound financial planning, enough money was set aside to continue making mortgage payments through August 2013.

Why do we need Generis to help Bethany raise money?...

• A debt reduction campaign is more challenging than any other type of campaign.

• The leadership felt it essential to secure professional guidance in creating a strategy so that the Bethany family can appreciate the advantages of eliminating the expansion debt.

…On Commitment Sunday, May 19 everyone will have the opportunity to turn in a commitment card for a three year commitment that is over and above your regular giving to our church.

eCelebrate JourneyBethany UMC has done an excellent job in servicing its debt during the past four years. A few specifics:

• Original expansion cost - $2.6 million• Bethany raised $1.26 million (one-third of that was in the first fruits offering)• The loan was refinanced in March 2012, reducing the rate from 6.25% to 4.875%, saving the church $3400/month• Amount still owed: $1.7 million; current payment is $10,312 and is good until March 2017

The faithfulness of the congregation during this time is to be commended. However, now is the time for us to finish paying for the building so our energy and focus can be on where God’s vision is leading us.

Please be in prayer for God’s guidance and leadership in your life in this matter as we prepare to lock in our commitments on Commitment Sunday, May 19.

Over and beyond giving will require everyone sacrificing something, changing something in their lives. The situation calls for equal sacrifice, not equal giving.

It involves a commitment to give generously and sacrificially. As King David declared, “I will not offer to God that which cost me nothing” (2 Samuel 24:24).
