DIRECTOR'S NOTE:

Interpreter's Theatre or by extension a more recent term for Reader's Theatre or as Robert Breen devised it some thirty years ago, Chamber Theatre ..•.

At Eastern, it has traditionally meant the taking of material which had not been written in play form and setting it as a theatre piece. Thus Nicholas Nickleby, originally a novel by Charles Dickens, seemed a good choice. A few years ago, the Royal Shakespeare Company did a version of this novel which ran just under nine hours, and was presented on two evenings. You had to purchase a ticket for both of these nights in order to see the show--they were only sold that way. This version, adapted by Tim Kelly, takes basically different characters from the sprawling novel and concentrates on them and does so in about two hours. - GES
